I e filed my 1099's thru QB, can I print the 1096?

Hey there, @lmgarv6328. Congrats on your first post in the Community! 🎉

I'm here to provide some insight into your question about Form 1096. According to the IRS's most recent publication on Form 1096, those that file their 1099-MISC forms electronically (such as with Intuit's E-file service) do not need to submit a 1096. For more information regarding the service, please refer to our 1099's E-file FAQ here.

Please keep in touch with me here should you have any additional questions, I want to ensure your success. Thanks for coming to the Community and take care.

I e filed my 1099's thru QB, can I print the 1096?

We are conducting an audit and he would like to see a 1096.  I already processed and e-filed our 1099s to be sent out through Intuit.  How can I get a copy of that 1096?

Hello @BillAMTA,

You can print your 1096 form the same way on how you prepare and file your 1099 forms. Let me show you how.

To start with, you can use this article and go to how you prepare your 1099 form: Create and file 1099s using QuickBooks Online.

Once done, here's how you can start printing it:

  1. On the last step of your 1099 preparation, select I'll file myself.
  2. Select a form you wanted to use in printing your 1096 form.
  3. Complete the alignment instructions.
  4. Select Print on 1096 form.
  5. Click Print.

In addition, here's an article you can read to learn more about how you can print your form: Print a 1096 form

On top of that, I've got you this helpful article for guidance in preparation for the 2020 tax season: QuickBooks Online Payroll Year-end Checklist.

If there's anything else that I can help you with, please let me know by leaving any comments below. I'll be here to lend a hand.

I e filed my 1099's thru QB, can I print the 1096?

Does this also mean we don't need to submit a 1096 if we filed 1099 NEC?

Thanks for joining in this thread, usercrabmeadowfilms.

I'd be glad to share some information regarding filing 1099s in QuickBooks Online.

Yes, you don't need to present 1096 if you already submitted the 1099-NEC electronically (E-file).

The 1096 form summarizes the information from the 1099 forms you are submitting for the tax year. You would only need to file 1096 if your 1099s are in paper forms (not E-file).

To know more about this process, here's an article for your reference: Create and file 1099s using QuickBooks Online. On the same link, you'll find the steps on how to E-file your 1099s as well as a guide on how to check the filing status.

Don't hesitate to drop me a reply below if you have any other 1099 and 10966 concerns or anything about QuickBooks. I'll be your helping hand today. Have a good one.

I e filed my 1099's thru QB, can I print the 1096?

Hello,

I also filed 1099 with quickbooks (Intuit EFile), however, it looks like the state of California requires a separate filing. And Quickbooks specifically mentioned that they are not doing state filings. So is there a way to print out 1096 so I can send everything to FTB?

Thank you!

I can help you print out the copy of your 1096, a1modular.

You can locate your form 1096 and print it out from the Vendor tab. I'll show you how to do it:

  1. Go to Expenses, then select Vendors.
  2. Tap Prepare 1099s.
  3. Enter all information correctly for the tax year.
  4. Choose Print and mail.
  5. Select the 1096 Form. If everything looks good, select Yes, looks good!
  6. Click Print on a 1096 Form
  7. If the form needs to be aligned, select No, it doesn't line up and select Next. Then re-select the 1096 form, and select Print on a 1096 Form

What if people want to view and print the 1096 for already e-filed 1099's? Eventhough they aren't required to submit the form they still want to see and print it. How can they do that??

Welcome to the Community space, @Prowoman.

The steps shared by my colleague AileneA can help you view and print the 1096 form even if the 1099 form is already filed. You'll have to re-select the 1096 form again to view and print them. You can also follow the steps below for further guidance:

  1. Go to the Expenses menu and select Vendors.
  2. Select Prepare 1099s.
  3. Enter all information correctly for the tax year, then select Print and mail
  4. Choose the 1096 form. If everything looks good, select Yes, looks good! Then select Print on a 1096 Form.
  5. If the form needs to be aligned, select No, it doesn't line up, and select Next. Then re-select the 1096 form, and select Print on a 1096 Form.

For more details on how to print 1096 form prints correctly, see this article: Print a 1096 form. Also, you can visit Intuit Market if you need other tax forms, checks, envelopes, and supplies designed to work seamlessly with Intuit products.

I e filed my 1099's thru QB, can I print the 1096?

I think the repeated response on how to print a  Form 1096 is confusing in that I believe QBO is saying we have to have an actual IRS Form 1096 and then we can print prior information on that form.  Doesn't seem very official.  So we have to buy a package of forms to print the prior tax year Form 1096?  Think the answer might be that if I used the QBO E-File for Form 1099-NEC that a Form 1096 did not have to be filed.  Wish there was a citation where IRS says that so that I can give it to the Texas state auditor.

I have printed my 1099.  I don't see an option to print the 1096.  I have only 1 1099, so I am filing by paper.

Hi there, BRRWSCadmin.

Let me make it up to you by ensuring you'll be able to print 1096 in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

We can perform basic browser troubleshooting to help you isolate the issue and make your browser load faster. This helps refresh the website and clear the cache that is blocking you from printing the 1096 form.

Let's start accessing your account using a different or private browser. You can use either of these shortcut keys:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

Once in, try to print the 1096 form. If it works, I recommend clearing your browser's cache. Doing so will remove the historical data and access QuickBooks with a clean slate. You can also switch to a different supported browser.

You can refer to this article for the detailed steps on how to print the 1096 form: Print a 1096 form in QuickBooks Online.

I'm also adding this article to learn which taxes and tax forms Intuit handles for your business and how to view past filed forms:

Don't hesitate to drop a comment below if you have other 1096 concerns or inquiries about payroll forms. I'm just around to help. Take care always.

Let's update your QuickBooks Desktop to print your 1096, @BRRWSCadmin.

You can go back to the Vendors menu to print your 1096. The same process to printing your 1099. If you don't have the option, you can update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release. This will make sure that you have the latest features and product improvements.

To manually update:

  1. Search for QuickBooks Desktop. Right-click the icon and select Run as administrator.
  2. From the No Company Open screen, go to the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Click the Options tab and select Mark All and then choose Save.
  4. Go to the Update Now tab and select the Reset Update checkbox.
  5. Click Get Updates.

You can now restart your computer for the changes to take effect. For detailed guidance, see this article: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.

From here, try to create and file 1099s with QuickBooks Desktop. In case you'd encounter any errors, you can check this fix missing contractors or wrong amounts on 1099s to resolve it.

I'm always here if you need further help in printing your 1099s. Take care, and have a great rest of the day!
