I'm here to provide some insight into your question about Form 1096. According to the IRS's most recent publication on Form 1096, those that file their 1099-MISC forms electronically (such as with Intuit's E-file service) do not need to submit a 1096. We are conducting an audit and he would like to see a 1096. I already processed and e-filed our 1099s to be sent out through Intuit. How can I get a copy of that 1096?
Hello @BillAMTA,
You can print your 1096 form the same way on how you prepare and file your 1099 forms. Let me show you how.
To start with, you can use this article and go to how you prepare your 1099 form: Create and file 1099s using QuickBooks Online.
Once done, here's how you can start printing it:
In addition, here's an article you can read to learn more about how you can print your form: Print a 1096 form

Does this also mean we don't need to submit a 1096 if we filed 1099 NEC?
Thanks for joining in this thread, usercrabmeadowfilms.
I'd be glad to share some information regarding filing 1099s in QuickBooks Online.
Yes, you don't need to present 1096 if you already submitted the 1099-NEC electronically (E-file).
The 1096 form summarizes the information from the 1099 forms you are submitting for the tax year. You would only need to file 1096 if your 1099s are in paper forms (not E-file).
To know more about this process, here's an article for your reference: Create and file 1099s using QuickBooks Online. On the same link, you'll find the steps on how to E-file your 1099s as well as a guide on how to check the filing status.

Hello,
I also filed 1099 with quickbooks (Intuit EFile), however, it looks like the state of California requires a separate filing. And Quickbooks specifically mentioned that they are not doing state filings. So is there a way to print out 1096 so I can send everything to FTB?
Thank you!
Alexandra

What if people want to view and print the 1096 for already e-filed 1099's? Eventhough they aren't required to submit the form they still want to see and print it. How can they do that??
Welcome to the Community space, @Prowoman.

I think the repeated response on how to print a Form 1096 is confusing in that I believe QBO is saying we have to have an actual IRS Form 1096 and then we can print prior information on that form. Doesn't seem very official. So we have to buy a package of forms to print the prior tax year Form 1096? Think the answer might be that if I used the QBO E-File for Form 1099-NEC that a Form 1096 did not have to be filed. Wish there was a citation where IRS says that so that I can give it to the Texas state auditor.
I have printed my 1099. I don't see an option to print the 1096. I have only 1 1099, so I am filing by paper.
