inactive subscription in payroll - subscription is active

Good morning, @CLRPC

I'd be happy to help with getting this corrected for you.

Before going into detail, I want to ask if you could run a payroll update? This way, we can determine what's causing it to say inactive.

You can check out this latest tax table article to ensure you have the latest one. If you don't have the latest tax table, here's how to download it in QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. Select the Employees menu.
  2. Choose Get Payroll Updates
  3. Click on the Download Entire Update check-box.
  4. Go to Download Latest Update. A window will pop-up when the download is complete.

If all fails, I suggest visiting the Resolve a problem verifying your payroll subscription article. It provides detailed instructions that you can follow in the order shown to fix this issue.

Reach out to me whenever you have additional questions. Please know I'm here ready to help you. Have a safe and productive weekend ahead!

Let's edit let's re-enter your payroll service key so QuickBooks will initiate a new connection and reactivate your payroll subscription.

  1. Go to Employees.
  2. Select My Payroll Service.
  3. Click Manage Service Key.
  4. Find and select your payroll service key.
  5. Select Remove.
  6. Click Add.
  7. Enter your active payroll service key.
  8. Select Finish.
  9. Click OK.

Here's an article you can read to learn more: Enter your payroll service or disk delivery key.

I'm also including a reference here for ideas with managing your payroll tasks: Employees and Payroll Taxes.

Hello, @reynoldsfi.

There are several possible reasons why you're still getting an inactive payroll subscription prompt. Let's delete the Paysub.ini file. This is one of the application files. Once it's damaged, it lets you validate your account now and then.

Here's how:

  1. Display hidden files or folders
  2. From the Search field, type Paysub.ini.
  3. Once you see the Paysub.ini file.
  4. Right-click on it, then select Delete.
  5. Repeat the same steps until all Paysub.ini files are deleted.

Once deleted, you can run the latest payroll update before we can proceed in creating our paychecks. Also, make sure that your QuickBooks software is updated to the latest version. Just make sure to restart your computer after the update. This is to make sure that QuickBooks all components are updated.

If the issue persists, I'd recommend contacting our Payroll Support Team. They have the tools to look up your account securely. Also, a specialist will be able to further investigate the reason why your payroll subscription is still inactive.

Let me know if you have other questions about managing your QuickBooks account. I'm always here to help.

I am having the same exact problem with QB desktop 2019.  I paid for my renewal on 6/8/2020. My subscription is ACTIVE when I sign into my Intuit account, but is showing INACTIVE in my Payroll window and will not allow me to run Q2 941 tax forms.

I've also tried all the suggestions listed here (and more) with no resolution.    I followed the instructions to open a CHAT with customer support (during the posted limited hours) and the secondary chat window never loads.  At this point I've paid for QB support (and the chat feature doesn't work) and I cannot file my taxes. I am NOT amused and need some real support from Intuit to get this resolved!

I'm having the same problem...our auto renew was on 07/13 and we've been getting this error for a couple of weeks.  I've chatted with QB because the website says there's nobody available to talk to.  This is past the point of frustrating.

Can't find the paysub.ini file... I've literally been trying to get support for 2 weeks for this issue... omg

Is there another name it could be under? QB support didn't know where to find it,  but we've done everything else and my people would really like a paycheck this week

I hope you have resolved this but if not, try this

With the new version of quickbooks, the way they know how much to charge you for payroll is when you send the paystubs online!  Yup that is right - the paystubs are the issue.

Go to FILE> PRINT FORMS > PAYSTUBS and select SEND ONLINE

the system will prompt you for the user name and password that you used for VIEWMYPAYCHECK / Quickbooks workforce setup.

If you don't submit these paystubs, intuit doesn't know how many employees you have paid and can't bill you monthly.

this also resolves the problem when you are trying to do payroll and receive a message that you need to update your payroll. Even when you perform the update, payroll still does not show that federal and local taxes are being deducted.  Even though i updated several times, i kept getting a message that I needed to download and update my tax tables.  Once i submitted paystubs - VOILA - a bill arrives and now everything works....

Hope this helps !
