We are currently working on adding the ability to electronically file your 2020 NJ-W2 and NJ-W3 tax filings via your QuickBooks Desktop Payroll account. We understand that with the agency e-file mandate, this issue has been a cause of concern for our New Jersey customers. Prior to the February 15, 2021 due date, we will provide an email update when the ability to electronically file these returns has been enabled. We apologize for the delay in adding this feature for your business. Sincerely, |

I received the email stating that the NJ w2 and W3 efile is now available. I updated my Quickbooks and the e-file button is disabled. How do I enable the button and or set it up for efile? The "help" for "how can I e-file this form" window get an error message. Please help at time is running out.

E file works now. Just go to File Forms, At the bottom of that screen click on Change filing methods, It will bring to a screen click Next, make sure for Federal Forms W2 W3 Efile is selected, Click Finish. Then go back to File Forms, Scroll down you will see NJ W2 worksheet, Open & go thru like you would to create W2s, then click Submit Form button. Follow thw the same to send NJ W3. Hope this helps. Quickbooks made it really easy now.
We cannot file the 2021 NJ W2 forms. Our total payroll in in excess of the 9,999,999 limit, but the NJ screens do not offer the option to file the W2 forms in batches like A-H and then I-Z. Can the 2021 file be created and then we can upload to the State of New Jersey on our own? The format is very similar to the format used by the SSA.
Hi there, @Brian F.
I'm here to provide additional information when filing your W2 forms.
Creating a 2001 file isn't possible, while the state hasn't made the electronic filings available for these forms via QuickBooks, you can run the Payroll Summary report to get the data.
Here's how:
Once done, go to this link: State of New Jersey's instructions to file your state W-2s.
For more details about our payroll tax forms and payment submission, you can look into the New Jersey Payroll Tax Compliance page.
You'll also find other guides here.
Please get back to me if you need more help with your tax forms or anything in QuickBooks Desktop. I'd be happy to help. Have a wonderful day.
Abegail,
Our had filed thousands of W-2 forms over the past decade with the state of NJ using the text files generated by our Thomson Reuters Software. The Electronic filing specifications for NJ are not much different that the federal format, so it should not be to much to be able to create a file for NJ. I have a client who has filed their 2021 W2 forms with the State of NJ from their Quickbooks software this year and received a confirmation email from the state of NJ. Quickbooks looks like it would work other than it cannot handle the size of the file (greater than $9,999,999). We have almost 400 forms to file so entering on the NJ Website will be extremely cumbersome. I will see if we can export the payroll out of QuickBooks to our software to create the NJ File for upload.
Hi, I'm also an NJ filer, but it is requesting that I first enroll in Form 940, 941 and 944 e-file, but I'm already e-filing these forms using this method. It also wants me to send this filing information to the IRS, including company contact and SSN. Is this step necessary in order to e-file NJ W-2s for my staff?

Hi ggossamer,
Thank you for getting help with filing your state W-2.
You won't need to enroll for federal filing if you've been doing it in QuickBooks. I recommend checking this with our QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Support. That way, they can use more tools to check why you're still asked to enroll for electronic filing.
You can also chat with them on weekdays from 6 AM to 6 PM PT.
Feel free to go back to this thread if you have other questions in mind.
It's now time to file the 2022 W-2's and QuickBooks STILL does NOT support W-2 filing for New Jersey!!!!! I am furious. What is going on and what is the work around??
I hear your sentiments, Tiedyedeb.
Let me make it up to you by providing a workaround for filing your W-2 form.
Since e-filing of the NJ W-2 form in QuickBooks Desktop is currently unavailable, you'll have to create a payroll tax worksheet to have all the needed data. Then, manually upload your W-2 file to the state agency. For more details about the process, please proceed to page 3 of this article: Specifications for Reporting W-2 Information Via Electronic Filing.
Also, I'd recommend downloading the latest payroll tax table before generating your NJ W-2s. Doing so ensures your program stays compliant with paycheck calculations.
When ready, I've added the steps below to generate a worksheet:
Additionally, I've added an article that'll help you make sure you're compliant with the state payroll tax regulations: Payroll Tax Compliance Links. There, you can find information on tax forms, withholdings, unemployment and other tax, e-file and pay information, general state and agency information, and employer registration.
Please stay in touch if you have additional payroll queries or concerns. I'm just around to help you out. Take care always.
Am I understanding this correctly? For New Jersey, we have to manually input the W-2's to the State of NJ?? This can not be correct. Please let me know what I have to do to efile the W-2's
Thanks for joining in, @Boxes. Yes, your interpretation is correct.
While the New Jersey state has not made electronic filings for these forms available through QuickBooks, you can get the data by running the Payroll Summary report.
Here's how:
After that, go to this link: State of New Jersey's instructions to file your state W-2s.
For more information on our payroll tax forms and payment submission, go to the New Jersey Payroll Tax Compliance page.

This does not seem to be accurate. Would you confirm again whether it's possible to efile NJ W2s?
I have an option called "State W-2s - NJ State W-2s Worksheet (E-file)" for filing NJ W2s. Is that not how it's done?
I also have an option called "NJ-W-3 - Gross Income Tax Reconciliation of Tax Withheld (E-file Only)" - isn't that also necessary?
Hi there, @ggossamer.
Yes, we can e-file NJ W2s in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). First off, make sure to download and install the latest payroll tax table. This ensures your program will stay compliant with paycheck calculations.
