QuickBooks Pro 2011 Upgrading to new Quickbooks version

My old computer has Qucikbooks Pro 2011 and I am moving to a new computer. With it being Windows 10 I know I will have to upgrade to a new Quickbooks. I've read some on here say migrating to say QuickBooks 2019 from older Quickbooks software causes file issues. Is the smarter thing to do is buy Quickbooks 15 or 16 ? Appreciate any help

QuickBooks Pro 2011 Upgrading to new Quickbooks version

Hi, @etcmjm.

When moving to a new version, its recommended to only move up every 3 years. If you have 2011 its recommended to move to 2014. You can do this by getting the trial versions of 2014, 2017, and 2020. This is the order of the versions needed. You can also get a trial version by calling Customer Service. They'll help walk you through on getting this accomplished.

You want to make sure you save copies of the file every time you move to the new trial. The reason for saving each file is that in case an import of the file doesn't turn out correctly, you'll have a backup to correct the issue. You're able perform this without calling our support team. You can see the instructions by going to How to Upgrade to 2012-22019.

Please know I'm always here lending a helping hand and if you have any more questions or concerns. Cheers to a safe and productive week ahead.

@etcmjm

Call and ask Intuit Data Service to convert your data file of 2011 to 2020. Should you need to resolve it in due course, consider purchasing a 3rd party conversion service. You have to avoid using unsupported QBD version (i.e older than 2017) on Win 8.1 or 10.

QuickBooks Pro 2011 Upgrading to new Quickbooks version

Hello.   I am a New Zealand user of Quickbooks Pro 2010-11 also.   I am quite happy with the current program and don't want to move to cloud based.     I wasn't aware of any other upgrades/versions  since then.  But I also have to upgrade my computer and windows to Windows 10.      Can I just install the current CD Rom program software into the new computer and transfer the data across?

It's good to hear that you're having a good experience with QuickBooks, bromleysteel60.

I'm here to share some information about upgrading the version of your program.

In QuickBooks, we have this policy wherein your program will be discontinued after three years. When this happens, your access to QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Service, Live Support, Online Backup, Online Banking, and other services will be stopped. This also means you'll no longer receive any critical updates.

That being said, I'd suggest upgrading your QuickBooks version. Since you have a QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2010, you'll have to upgrade it to QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2014. Then, to QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2017, and then to QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2020. You can use our trial version to upgrade your program.

With regard to your Windows operating system, if you have Windows 7 or Windows 8, you are not required to update it. However, if you've updated or bought a new computer with Windows 10 already installed, we can help you check the version to ensure its compatibility with QuickBooks Desktop.

You can check this article on how to do it: Which Windows 10 version works best for QuickBooks Desktop?

As for the CD ROM software, you can install it on your new computer as long as it's a 4X DVD-ROM. You may reach out to an IT personnel to guide you on how to install and transfer the data.

I've also added these articles for more information about our discontinuation policy and upgrading your QuickBooks program:

I'm sure with these details, you can now upgrade and learn more about the QuickBooks software. I'll always be right here if you need help. Keep safe!

@bromleysteel60

If you are in NZ, it is possible you are using QB Australian version. Look closely and you may find many graphics are in red, not in green as the official color of Intuit. Company doesn't support AU version any longer and you may need converting to US version instead with a one time license. You will need a 3rd party service to do so. As additional note, QB 2010/2011 doesn't support Win 10. You may try installing and running it in compatibility mode Win 7 on your Win 10.

We have a multi-user QuickBooks Pro 2011 on a few Windows 7 PCs and have the company file stored on a Windows 2012 R2 server. Everything runs smoothly. There is a plan to upgrade the Windows 2012 R2 server to Windows 2019 server.  Do we need to upgrade the QuickBooks Pro 2011 to a newer version before the Windows server upgrade? If we need to upgrade to a newer QuickBook Pro version, can we convert the company file from QuickBooks Pro 2011 to QuickBooks Pro 2020? Thank you for your comments.

@COHS1234

I am not sure you are able upgrading your 2011 company file directly to 2020. We would recommend the following steps:

1. Secure a backup file (QBB)

2. Install the trial license of QBD 2020 Pro and restore the QBB file on it.

3. Otherwise, you need upgrading your file to QBD 2015 as the stepping stone. Send your business email address in a private message to us. We may share the trial license of QBD 2015.

4. Once your company file is converted completely, you may prepare the new server.

5. Install the trial license of QBD 2020 Pro on the new server prior to purchasing the new license later.

Hi Sarah,

I need to do this for my 2011 file. Unfortunately the link to the trial versions you provided does not show any other versions than 2021. Can you please direct me to the other old trial versions you mention?

Hello, Andrew R.

Thank you for getting back to us. Let me chime in and provide some information on how to upgrade your old version to the new version in QuickBooks.

As mention above the program will be discontinued after three years. That said, you'll need to upgrade your QuickBooks Pro 2011 to QuickBooks Pro 2014. Then QuickBooks Pro 2017 and upgrade it to the 2020 version. To perform that steps you can refer to this article: Download a trial of QuickBooks Desktop

Additionally, I'd still suggest checking out this website: Upgrade Your Company Files after Switching to a New Version of QuickBooks Desktop. This link provides you the detailed steps on how to complete the upgrade process.

In case you see any errors when installing the software, visit this article: Fix QuickBooks Desktop Install Errors. You'll find links and steps on how to fix them.

Reach out to me if there's anything else you need. I'll be here to keep helping. Take good care.

I'm confused. The link Download a trial of QuickBooks Desktop only shows downloads for version 2021. Where do I download 2014?

@Andrew R

You will need the trial license of QBD 2015 and maybe QBD 2019 to upgrade your file. Contact us in private if you require those codes.

Maybe I'm not seeing the same web page that you are seeing. I only see download links for 2021 trials. What does the link say on the page for the 2014 trial download? Maybe I can do a search on the page to find it.

This is what I see:

QuickBooks Pro 2021

Use these codes to install QuickBooks Pro 2021 trial:

  • License #:  0421-9621-3866-298
  • Product #:  989375

QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise 21.0

  • You don't need any codes to open the trial.

QuickBooks Mac 2021

  • You don't need any codes to open the trial.

Thanks for getting back to us, @Andrew R.

Downloading the 2014, 2017, and 2020 trial version QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) is pretty quick and easy. Please refer to these steps on how:

  1. Go to: https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products.
  2. In the Will you be using QuickBooks Desktop on multiple computers at the same time (multi-user mode)? section, select Not sure, then click  Next.
  3. In the Standard setup section, search and download your QuickBooks version, then tick Search.
  4. Hit the Download (green button) to start.

Once done, you can now follow the steps on the article shared by my colleague above to complete to process.

For more insights about upgrading your QBDT, consider checking out this article for future reference: Upgrade your company files after you switch to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

When I do a Google search for that sentence, it does go to that link so that means at one time Google found it there but I do not see it anymore. It has been removed.

QuickBooks Pro 2011 Upgrading to new Quickbooks version

Hi there, Andrew R.

Thanks for following up with those additional details. I want to make sure you're able to download a trial version of QuickBooks Desktop.

Since the issue is persisting even after trying the steps listed by colleagues above, you may want to try clearing the browser cache. The cache is in place to store frequently used data to make loading web pages quicker and easier. If it becomes too full, it can have the opposite effect, potentially causing pages to load incorrectly or even re-direct. This is most likely what's causing the problem when you try to reset the password. Here's how to clear the cache if you're using Chrome:

1. Click the three vertical dots in the top right corner.
2. Select More Tools, then Clear Browsing Data.
3. Change the time range to All Time.
4. Only check Cached images and files.
5. Click Clear data.

The following link provides similar steps for other browsers: Clear cache and cookies to fix browser issues

Once you've cleared the cache, try the trial download page another time. Please know I'm only a comment or post away if you have any other questions.

I've cleared the caches with both safari and chrome on my mac. I've also tried a chrome incognito window and safari private window. None of these allowed the Will you be using QuickBooks Desktop on multiple computers at the same time (multi-user mode)? page to show up. What happens when you use an incognito window? Does this require me to be signed in to an account associated with a license? Can you try that to see if you get what I see? I am currently not signed in because I have another website issue with resetting my password. That does not work either with the cleared caches.

QuickBooks Pro 2011 Upgrading to new Quickbooks version

Thanks for getting back to me and for trying clearing the cache, Andrew R.

When I click on the link listed above for the trial, it does take me to the page referenced asking if I will be using QuickBooks Desktop on multiple computers at the same time and I'm not currently logged into an account associated with a license. I had previously began the trial setup when I originally responded and just now clicked the back button in the browser to re-start the download and I was only able to get back to the standard setup page that you are seeing. However, I closed that tab and clicked the Desktop trial link again and it brought up the multi-user question.

If the issue persists, I recommend reaching out to a member of the QuickBooks Desktop Support Team. Agents have specialized tools, like screen sharing, to take a more in-depth look and determine what's causing the problem. Here's how to contact the team:

1. Press the F1 key on your keyboard.

2. Select Contact Us.

3. Enter Support in the field and click Continue.

4. From here you can begin a live chat with an agent.

This linked article provides these steps if you ever need them again in the future: Contact the QuickBooks Desktop Customer Support Team

Alternatively, you can also contact support through this link: QuickBooks Support

You know where to come if you have any other questions. I'll be here to help in any way that I can.

I switched to a different computer with a different OS, Windows 8.1 and used Edge browser. I finally saw the missing page. However when I download it appears to be a non-trial .exe. I get to the install screen where it asks for a license and product number. Where do I get those for a trial?

QuickBooks Pro 2011 Upgrading to new Quickbooks version

Hi there, Andrew R.

I appreciate you for coming back to help you further with your concern and any issue you've encountered.

Since when you download QuickBooks Desktop it appears to be a non-trial, I suggest following the steps and information shared above on how to download the QuickBooks trial version. This is to ensure that you're routed to the right software.

On the other hand, there are different ways to know your QuickBooks license number and product code.

  • f you bought QuickBooks Desktop from our website, you'd received an email with your purchase confirmation and product details.
  • If you bought QuickBooks from a retail store, kindly look for the brightly colored sticker on the original CD envelope.

You'll also have the option to visit the Customer Account Management Portal (CAMPS) to get your product and license number from there as long as you registered your product.

For additional information, you can refer to this article: Find QuickBooks Desktop and Point of Sale product and license info.

Please refer to the articles below to see different information about the new and improved features designed to benefit your business using QuickBooks Desktop 2021 and for QuickBooks Mac 2021.

Please let me know if you have any other issues or concerns by leaving a comment in this thread. I'll be here to help. Have an amazing rest of the day!
