Are the new 1099 NEC forms compatible with Quickbooks Pro 2016

The "non employee compensation" box was removed from the 1099 MISC, and is now being handled with it's own separate form, the 1099 NEC.

My question is; Will my Desktop version of Quickbooks Pro 2016 be able to generate the new forms?

Thank you!

Are the new 1099 NEC forms compatible with Quickbooks Pro 2016

Hi PDSDAVE,

I'm here to share some information about how Form 1099-NEC works in QuickBooks.

We're unable to provide payroll and tax form updates on the products affected by the service discontinuation (version 2017 and below). Additionally, the Form 1099-NEC is currently unavailable in QuickBooks Desktop

Please know that we're making sure that QuickBooks is compliant with all the IRS regulations when it comes to filing of tax forms. Rest assured, we'll keep you updated with its availability through email or in-app notifications.

Once the update has been implemented and rolled out, the tax form will only be available in these QuickBooks versions:

  • QuickBooks Desktop Pro and Premier 2020, 2019, 2018
  • QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 20, 19, 18
  • QuickBooks Desktop Accountant 2020, 2019, 2018

That being said, you'll want to consider upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop to the latest version. This way, you'll have uninterrupted access to our latest payroll updates and other services.

I have just updated my Quickbooks to the new 2021.  Does it still have to be updated with the new 1099-NEC?  Also, what if we still need to use 1099-MISC for payment of rent, will we have to separate them or will there be 2 areas for 1099's for each one?

The 1099-NEC is currently unavailable in QuickBooks Desktop, ggill.

Our compliance team is still working closely with the IRS for proper guidance regarding the 1099-NEC form. We'll keep you updated with its availability through email or in-app notifications. All needed tax forms will be available by the end of the year.

You can learn more about 1099s with this article: What is a 1099 and do I need to file one? Also, you'll want to check with the IRS if there's a need to file 1099-MISC when 1099-NEC is already filed.

I'll be here if you have other questions on available tax forms in QuickBooks Desktop.

So, if I am reading all of this correctly:  QuickBooks will support 1099-NEC forms by the end of December.  Please confirm!  Also, will it be able to be printed on blank perforated paper, or will will we be purchasing the paper forms?  Thank you!!!

I can share some info to ensure you can manage your 1099-NEC forms in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), @TS5130.

We're unable to provide a definite time on when the said form becomes available in QBDT as also mentioned by my peers above. Rest assured, our product development team is actively working on this so we can implement this the soonest time possible.

For your second question, currently, you still have to order a pre-printed copy of this form. To do this, you can go to our QuickBooks Checks and Supplies website. Alternatively, you can print a copy of this form through the IRS website.

For more updates about this, please check out this article: Latest payroll news and updates. Also, I encourage you to visit our Firm of the future site to get you in the loop about the latest news and product developments. To narrow down your search, you can go to the Product & Industry News tab.

I"ll be adding this handy article to gain more insights about 1099-NEC forms. It contains common questions on how to handle them properly in QBDT: When and how to file 1099 forms.

Also, you'll want to know how to access and print your other tax forms to save a copy for future use. Please refer to this article for the detailed steps: View and print payroll tax forms.

You can always count on me if you have more questions about managing your payroll forms in QBDT. I'd be glad to hear more from you in the comment section. Take care and enjoy the rest of the day.

Good day, MBourdens.

I understand that you also want the 1099-NEC form to be available in QuickBooks Desktop. While we're unable to provide a definite time and which version it'll be available, please check our QuickBooks Blog and  Firm of the future page. All new features and innovations will be posted there.

In addition, there'll be a pop-up message in QuickBooks Desktop asking you to update it if there's an update. Currently, only the 1099-MISC is supported and I added these articles for your reference:

Leave a comment again here if you have more questions. Stay safe!

Hey @Michelle at CCLLC

Thanks for reaching out to the QuickBooks Community! QuickBooks software updates, including vendor and payroll forms, will be available for all QB products in the 3 most current years.

If you are using QB Mac 2018-2020, you will be able to create 1099’s with the most current IRS forms. After going through the QuickBooks Desktop 1099 Wizard, QuickBooks Desktop will connect to the Tax1099 service and import your contractors and vendor payments applicable to the 1099s. Here is a link with more information about preparing and filing 1099’s: 1099 filing for QuickBooks.

Let make know if you have any other questions about year-end forms, or anything else. I’m always happy to help.

Thank you, I received an email regarding creating new accounts for 1099-NEC payments.  I followed the steps, but still did not see where there was an option to do the 1099-NEC. Hope QB gets this fixed.

Hi there, Lisa galvin.

Thank you for stopping by the Community, I'm happy to help. If you're trying to set up and file your 1099 NEC form, you can follow this article. The steps to set up are as follows:

Step 1: Backup your QuickBooks Desktop file:

Before you begin to adjust your QuickBooks Desktop file, create a back up. If you will need to amend prior year forms, you will need to restore this backup to access the forms and data from before 2020. The data for prior years will not show accurately once you map the new boxes on the new forms.

Step 2: Create a 1099 Summary report:

Identify the amounts paid and to which accounts.

  1. Go to Reports, then select Vendors & Payables.
  2. Choose either 1099 Summary or 1099 Detail.
Note: Reports will default to the Last Calendar Year, so be sure the report is set up for the correct date range next to Dates at the top of the report.
  3. Use the 1099 Summary to identify the vendors and the 1099 Detail to identify the transactions. Review the totals under to determine what amounts may need to be moved.
Important: Once you edit your accounts or payments, your previous reports will update and not reflect prior year filings. You may want to print these reports for your records before making any adjustments.

Based on your needs to file both the 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC you will need to adjust your Chart of Accounts to ensure accounts are set up specifically for each form.

Step 3: Create a new account:

Add a new account to your Chart of Accounts to track the separate payments.

  1. Go to Lists, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Select the Account dropdown, then choose New to create a new account.
  3. Select an account type of Expense, Other Expense or COGS, then select Continue.
  4. Enter the Account Name and details such as DescriptionNote and Tax-line Mapping.
  5. Select Save & Close.
  6. Repeat this process for each new account to be reported on the 1099-NEC.

Step 4: Move the payments to the new account:

You can choose to create a journal entry to move amounts to show in the newly created 1099-NEC accounts or you can edit existing payments to the new accounts.

Add a journal entry

  1. Go to Company and select Make General Journal Entries.
  2. Fill out the fields to create your journal entry. Make sure your debits equal your credits when you’re done.
  3. Select Save & Close or Save & New if you have more entries to make.
  4. Repeat this process for each payment you need to move.

Edit existing contractor payments

  1. Select Vendors then Vendor Center.
  2. Choose the vendor and locate the transactions you need to edit.
  3. Double-click to open the transaction to make your edits.
  4. After you have made the changes, select Save & Close.
  5. Repeat this process for each payment you need to change.

Step 5: Create a 1099 Summary report:

Run a 1099 Summary or 1099 Detail report to validate the changes to reflect the correct amounts in each account for both the 1099-NEC and the 1099-MISC.

  1. Go to Reports, then select Vendors & Payables.
  2. Choose either 1099 Summary or 1099 Detail.
Note: Reports will default to the Last Calendar Year, so be sure the report is set up for the correct date range next to Dates at the top of the report.
  3. You should see the changes you made reflected.

Once these steps are completed, you are ready to begin filing your 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC forms.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to reach out below. Thank you for your time and have a lovely afternoon.

The newly revived 1099-NEC is not yet available in QuickBooks Desktop, Evy1.

I can see that the IRS has just reactivated this form for employers and business owners to report non-employee compensations given to independent contractors.

QuickBooks Payroll services are compliant with all the IRS regulations when it comes to filing tax forms. We'll update you via email or a prompt inside QuickBooks as soon as we get an update about this form.

I am wondering the same.  I don't want to have to go thru and make new accounts and change everything around.  I would be much easier to change the one for payments to attorneys then all of my contractors

Let's make sure that we have the latest QuickBooks version, Tatum1234_.

We can print the 1099 NEC when we have the latest version of the QuickBooks file.

Then, let's also make sure that we have an updated payroll.

I also have an updated (just checked and ran updates even though automatic) Desktop Accountant 2018, and my 1099 previews (run thru the 1099 Wizard) are only for 1099-MISC.  Your reply seemed to indicate 1099-NEC printing was now available, but I don't see it.  Please advise.

Hello there, @dee730.

The latest payroll update (22101) is released on December 17, 2020. It's available for all supported QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) products. With this, the From 1099 NEC should be accessible through your QBDT Premier Accountant 2019 version.

When installing the latest available updates isn't allowing you to access the From 1099 NEC, I'd recommend contacting our Customer Care team. They can securely pull up your account, identify the cause why you're unable to get the said payroll form, and guide you with a fix. Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
  2. Go to the Help menu.
  3. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  4. Click Contact Us.
  5. Enter a brief description of your issue, then click Let's talk.
  6. Then choose your preferred way to connect with them.

In the meantime, I'm adding this article to know what's included in payroll update 22101: Latest payroll news and updates. It contains details about the tax table, forms, and e-file and pay improvements.

Additionally, here's an article to further guide you in preparing tax forms for the year 2020 in QBDT Payroll: Year-end checklist for QuickBooks Desktop Payroll. It provides important dates and tasks as you plan your work.

Please let me know if you have follow-up concerns about reconciliation reports and other financial data in QBO or other inquires. I'm just around to help. Keep safe always, @BrockScott

Hello,

It's 12.18.2020, my QB shows there are no new updates so I assume it auto-updated already, but I still see nothing about 1099-NEC in the 1099 wizard, and everything discusses mapping non-employee comp to box 1 on 1099-MISC.  We do not use Payroll.  When will I see this available?
