@jauto1

QB 2015 does not support Win 10. You may follow these steps.

1, Try installing and running it in compatibility mode Win 7.

2. Copy your data file of 2004 to local

3. Try restoring it on QB 2015

QB 2016 doesn't support Win 10 either. Frankly, I am not sure you may upgrade your old data file of 2004 in one jump to 2016. You may need to purchase a 3rd party conversion service. If you wish to run QB on your Win 10, I would recommend:

1. Purchase a new license of QB 2020 Pro edition. For 1 user license, you may purchase it for $300 directly, or around $200 thru a partner/reseller, and

2. Purchase a 3rd party service to convert your old data file to 2020.

What about if I want to use quickbooks online version instead of the desktop versions?  Quickbooks 2004 does not have export option to online version.

Thanks for getting back here in the thread @pro2022.

Let me step in and assist you on how to convert your company file on your QuickBooks Desktop 2004 version to QuickBooks Online.

QuickBooks Desktop 2004 is no longer supported. This is why it doesn't have the option to export data to the online version. However, you can look for an online download outside QuickBooks to export your company file.

You're unable to directly upgrade from QuickBooks 2004 to QuickBooks 2018, 2019, and 2020. It might cause a feature or company file damage. You'll need to upgrade your company file in 3 years gap version at a time.

Once you upgrade your company file to a supported version, you can use the QuickBooks Desktop 2020 Trial version for migration. You can use this article for the steps: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

If you have other concerns, please don't hesitate to leave a message in the comment section. I'm always around here in the Community to help. Keep safe, and have a good day.

@pro2022

You should be able convert your QBD 2004 data file to 2011 then 2015 prior to 2020. We may share the trial license of both of them. Otherwise, consider purchasing a 3rd party migration service from QBD 2004 to QBD 2020 and you may self migrate your data file on the trial license of QBD 2020 to QBO.

How to upgrade Company File from Older Version?

Hello there, HIS-Jacey.

QuickBooks Desktop 2014 is one of the discontinued program and the gap from it to the 2020 version is large. There might be feature differences between the two programs that might cause data damage or loss if we suddenly convert your company file to said version. Before doing anything, I'd recommend creating a backup copy of your company file.

You'll need to convert your 2014 company file incrementally so the data will be adjusted as we convert it to a higher version. To do this, I'd recommend contacting our Technical Support Team. They can help you download and install the higher versions (2015, 2016...2019). Then, then convert the file accordingly.

After that, you can already upgrade your company file to the 2020 version. Once you're done with the upgrade, it is always recommended to update the release version of the QuickBooks Desktop you're using.

You can always get back to us if you need additional assistance with the process. Have a great day!

Open your company file on QBD 2014 and create a backup file (QBB). Copy the file to the new folder and restore it on your new QBD 2020. It should be convert the file easily.

How to upgrade Company File from Older Version?

wait, wait, wait....So youre telling me if someone has an old (lets say 2006) Quickbooks and they just purchased a new Quickbooks pro 2019, they would need to buy a "midway Quickbooks Version" of like 2013 or so in order to successfully transfer their files to the new 2019 they JUST purchased....what an absolute crock. Sounds like a money grab to me..why would someone have to purchase a version theyre not going to use to just transfer their files to the newest desktop pro version they just bought. Garbage. That should be changed or QB should convert it completely for free..Forgive me if that is already a free conversion service..but if it isnt, it should be. Completely unfair to do to people who are buying your products.

How to upgrade Company File from Older Version?

Hello,

I got the point and see how important to transfer files from the older version to the latest one without using the other QuickBooks version. If the gap of the version is too long, we're unable to jump and make it once. It's advisable to use a version that is closer to your old one. This helps you ensure to transfer the file successfully.

You may consider searching for some websites that offer free transferring data to the latest version.

Let us know if you have other concerns with QuickBooks. Stay safe.

You don't need to purchase any outdated version. You should utilize the trial license as the stepping stones to upgrade. e.g If you have QBD 2006, you may need the trial license of QBD 2011 and 2015 to convert your old file prior to open it on QBD 2020 or 2021. We may share those trial licenses

How to upgrade Company File from Older Version?

I had QB Pro 2007. I was forced to upgrade my older computer and the 2007 version was no longer supported. I did do a back up and a company file before deleting old computer for sale. Now that my 2007 will not work I just had to purchase 2021 version. I cannot get either the back up or the company file to load. Is there someone at QB that can help me with this?

Thank you

How to upgrade Company File from Older Version?

Hello, firecapt13.

I want to make sure you're able to restore your back up company file on your computer. There are several possible causes why you're experiencing this certain type of behavior in QuickBooks Desktop. Most times it is caused by a disconnection between QuickBooks and the computer components.

To restore the file, Here's how:

  1. In QuickBooks, go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
  2. Select Restore a backup copy and then Next.
  3. Tap Local Backup and then Next.
  4. Browse your computer for your backup company file. It should look like this: [Your company name].qbb.
  5. Select a folder to decide where to save your restored company file. Then select Open
  6. When you're ready, press Save

For more detailed steps and information about restoring your company file, you can refer to this article: Restore a backup of your company file.

As I mentioned in earlier post. You will need the trial license of QBD 2011, 2015, and 2019 to upgrade your old file prior to opening it on QBD 2021. Contact us in private should you need those trial codes. Otherwise, you may purchase a 3rd party upgrade service.
