For over a week now, when I check for updates to my 2020 Accountant desktop, it runs through the updates and when it gets to the Critical Fixes update, it "acts" like it's downloading something (the percentage starts climbing and counting the kbs), but when it finishes, it says "Nothing new downloaded". Is this an issue that others are having? How do I know if I'm really missing an update or if this is just a "glitch"?
I appreciate you for going through the steps on updating your company file, @LANDYRAY.
The error is caused when an update isn't getting installed properly. Let's walk through some steps to try and get this resolved for you.
When obtaining the most updated release for QuickBooks Desktop, please make sure to enable the Reset Update option. It usually fixes issues related to any critical update, as well as other possible errors within the product. In case you need the steps, here's how:
I've also attached an article about installing product updates, like how you can resolve the error messages when performing the process: Resolve error 15XXX when downloading QuickBooks Desktop updates.
Also, you may consider reading helpful articles that can guide you in managing your books on QuickBooks Desktop. This includes topics such as setting up and connecting apps, tracking employees' time, setting up online payments, etc.:
Please keep me posted if you have any other concerns about your QuickBooks data. I want to make sure everything is taken care of for you. Have a good one, @LANDYRAY.
I checked off Reset Update and clicked Update Now. Same issue with "critical fixes". It acts like it's downloading something, gets all the way to 100% done, then says "Nothing New Downloaded". If there was nothing new downloaded, then why would it start progressing the percentage and kbs while checking?
This sounds frustrating, @LANDYRAY.
However, this behavior may be expected. Let's make sure there's an update that is needed. If you have QuickBooks Desktop 2020, the release is R13, which was available in October. Here's how you can find out which release you currently have:
If you're already on R13, then there's no update available. However, if you're on a previous release and experiencing this, you'll need to reach out to support.
I'm including a helpful article for you as well: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
Let me know how this goes, so we can discuss the next steps! I look forward to hearing from you.
It does show R13
I'm glad to hear this, @LANDYRAY.
This means you're up to date. It's normal for the system to check for an update, which is what you're seeing.
Let me know if I can help with anything else, I'm here!
I cannot get the Critical Fix to update. I have closed QuickBooks three (3) times and restarted my computer once. It is stuck on 'Install Pending'. I ordered $153.00 worth of 1099's that I cannot use and tomorrow is the mailing deadline. Looking at all the posts on QuickBooks support it seems that the 1099-NEC printing problem has been going on for quite sometime and yet it is still not fixed by the tax filing deadline. Unacceptable.
Hi there, janconstacctg.
I understand you need to be able to file the 1099-NEC forms since it’s time for tax filing. We need to make sure first, you have the latest release version of your QuickBooks Desktop. Press the F2 button on your keyboard to see the details. Below are the releases required to print 1099 NEC forms in QuickBooks Desktop Windows:

I am having the same constant error. I have tried resetting the updates numerous times, but that DOES NOT WORK. VERY ANNOYING! Support is not helpful so I guess will have to live with the defect
I appreciate you for trying the steps shared above, Wally CPA.
Let me route you to the correct support.
Since the same issue persists even after running some troubleshooting steps, I'd recommend reaching out to our phone support team. An agent can do a screen share to check your program further.

Which QBD year version do you have?
It's kinda dumb that there's been no progress on this topic in over a year. Just upgraded to 2023 Desktop Pro and installed all the updates - but (as this thread describes... stilll....) the "Critical updates" keeps downloading, ?installing?, finishing ... and coming up again, and again, and again.
We value your experience, @GARFOOTE. I can share a couple of troubleshooting steps to resolve it.
When this problem occurs, we'll have to ensure we're getting the correct release version. For QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2023, the latest is R5_9, released a few days ago. Feel free to press F2 to check the release version from the Product Information window. Please see the QBDT 2023 release notes article for more details.
If the system is up-to-date, it's normal for QBDT to scan for updates. To stop receiving automatic critical updates, I recommend turning it off. This way, QuickBooks will prevent prompting the system to download them if you decide to patch them manually. Here's how:
If the system greyed out the option from the Options tab, you can refer to TJames' recommended steps to turn off automatic system updates.
Please know that it is still important to toggle Automatic updates, ensuring you're receiving critical updates moving forward automatically. You can follow the same steps above but tick Yes in step 2.
Once all is good, you'll have to download the updates in the system or get updates from our download site by hand. Take a look at this article for more info: Update QuickBooks Dektop to the latest release.
However, if the same thing happens, I recommend using QuickBooks Tool Hub. This tool can help fix various unknown system issues.
Please let us know if you have other system issues or update concerns. We're always here to assist. Stay safe and well.
That doesn't al all directly address the issue. Turning off updates isn't (at all) a solution to Critical updates repeatedly downloading without apparent installation.
I understand the significance of preventing QuickBooks from showing critical updates and allowing you to have control over installing the updates, GARFOOTE.
We always want you to have a more stable and secure software environment. Thus, keeping your company file up-to-date is our priority. QuickBooks typically scans for fixes and initiates updates. Scanning for critical updates in QuickBooks Desktop is important for several reasons including, security, bug fixes, feature enhancements, compliance, and compatibility.
While automatic updates offer many benefits, were you able to follow the steps/link to turn off the automatic updates provided by my colleague? If not, there's another alternative approach to avoid receiving critical updates repeatedly. Go to the Help menu and open the Update QuickBooks Desktop window. Then, pick Options locate the update folder under Download location.
Then, navigate to the folder and delete the contents there. Once done, deny writes permissions to the folder. Right-click the folder Properties> Security>Edit.
Afterward, you have the option to change permissions so the system will not automatically run updates. Make sure to hit the Apply button to reflect the changes.
I'll include this article that provides more information on automatic downloads: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
Please feel free to share any additional concerns or questions you may have. We're here to provide you with the necessary details.
I'm puzzled why you think the topic of my question is automatic updates.
The topic is why the critical updates repeatedly shows as available, even after repeated attempts to install this manually.
I hear your sentiments, and It seems there was a misunderstanding in the previous responses, @GARFOOTE.
You can count on me to ensure that you are routed to the right support, dedicated to promptly resolving this issue.
Given that the critical updates continue to show as available, I suggest contacting our support team directly. They possess the necessary tools to examine your account securely, investigate this matter, and offer a resolution.
Here's how:
If you come across any potential data issues, feel free to refer to the solutions provided in this article for guidance: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file.

What he saw, was just what he said: "clicked Update Now. Same issue with "critical fixes". It acts like it's downloading something, gets all the way to 100% done, then says "Nothing New Downloaded". "
... and it (still) does that, with 2023 Desktop. Lather rinse repeat. If the program is on the most recent version, then Updates shouldn't see anything to download (acts like it's downloading ("critical fixes"), gets all the way to 100% done, then says "Nothing New Downloaded".)
What is the solution to this (given that calling in did NOTHING - we still had the issue while I was online with them - and STILL HAVE the issue. This cannot require a call to some seemingly random know-nothing support person - this needs to be ESCALATED to U.S. Domestic support.
Are you running QBD 2023 on Win 11?
Have you tried to reinstall your QBD Pro program?
You may also consider to install and run the trial version of QBD 2023 Enterprise at the same time to compare.
