I scheduled a meeting with a specialist. They informed me, inside of recorded phone call, that there is no other option other than to pay $650 every year if you want to not be locked out of you company data. I was told that not even my account will be able to access the data unless I pay the fee.

You can renew your license through a partner and get cashback. You can also use the trial version to access your historical data when you decide not to renew your license later.
I am in the same boat if anyone finds a good alternative. I also require payroll services. Ugh and it costs and arm and a leg now.
Which year version do you run? You can use QB Desktop with a non subscription license + a stand alone payroll app.
I got sick of them and switched to Paychex for payroll. Really good product, service and support and the price is very very reasonable and month-to-month. They took my company file from QB 2021 desktop and had payroll up and running with direct deposits in 24 hours.
Hello QB team,
About amazon and ebay, i wanna know how can i became a certified seller by qb to have the right to resell your products too?
QB Online or QB Desktop?
There is no way out of paying the annual subscription for a desktop license. Things changed in 2020. Quickbooks has a strong hold on the market and everyone using the is being held hostage by their data. At least with a local company file, i could get a programmer to unlock the file for me if I needed my financials. However, once your data is only in their cloud I'm guessing they will set even higher ransom.
Agreed

I use a 2019 version for personal finances. 2016 version for employer for a side company of theirs. The 2019 no longer exports to Excel, csv files only when upgraded computer to Windows 10. 2016's version on a Windows 11 computer has certain printing features no longer available. So, this 2024 version doesn't require buying a subscription at all ever?
Thank you for posting here in the Community, @OSC1900.
I can provide accurate information about the 2024 subscription for the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) version.
To use QBDT 2024, you’ll need to buy a subscription, as this version runs on a subscription-based model, unlike the 2016 and 2019 versions.
I would like to address the recent changes to QuickBooks Desktop. Effective 2022, QuickBooks Desktop has transitioned to a subscription-based model, necessitating users to renew their subscriptions on an annual basis to maintain access to the software.
Additionally, the subscription model provides customers with ongoing support and regular software updates, including the latest security enhancements. It also allows for performance monitoring and swift issue resolution. This update ensures that Intuit remains dependable, efficient, and always current for you.
If the subscription isn't renewed, users will still have access to their data for at least a year after the subscription ends. You can find more information in the article: Renew your QuickBooks Desktop subscription.
For future reference, you can refer to this article for instructions on how to export reports to Excel: Export reports as Excel workbooks in QuickBooks Desktop.

James, I appreciate the quick reply. I was mistaken that I had a 2016 version. It's really 2013. In any case, I found there are sellers on Ebay peddling what they call a Quickbooks Pro 2024 version that has a lifetime license and one replied about the subscription as being unnecessary and offered me a lower price in the reply. That seller only joined Ebay in July 2024. The other seller joined joined in May 2023 and has feedback from only 1 buyer. There are several sites that appear to be scams selling the program for far less.
Hey there, @OSC1900.
Thanks for coming back and giving us some additional details.
We encourage you to exercise with caution because the 2024 version is only available as a subscription. You can use the link below to buy it directly from us if you're interested in that version:

Since QB Desktop 2022, Intuit only offers the subscription license. Only scammers offer QB Desktop 2024 with non subscription licenses. If you don't need to run any add-ons (e.g QB Payroll, QB Payment), you can use the trial version for good as a workaround.
Can you download transactions from banks into it?
You can run the bank feed feature in the trial version.
Yes, @AnnieG, we can download transactions using the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) trial version. Let's go over some details to help you achieve the task.
To get started, download a 30-day trial of QBDT. Once installed, ensure that you set up your bank account for bank feeds. This can be done through Direct Connect or Web Connect, based on the availability at your bank.
When setting up your bank connection through Direct Connect, you'll need to secure a bank-provided PIN or password. If they can't provide you with the necessary PIN that QuickBooks is asking for, I suggest you use the Web Connect method. You'll download the transactions from your online banking account and import them into your QBDT account.
Here's how to download your bank transactions:
To import it to QBDT:
Refer to this article for the complete process: Set up bank accounts for Bank Feeds in QuickBooks Desktop
From here, you can now review, match, and categorize your transactions: Add and match Bank Feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.
When your QBDT trial ends, your account will become inactive and you won't be able to access the software or your data unless you purchase a subscription. You can create a backup file to secure a copy of your company's data.
If you have other questions regarding your bank transactions, please feel welcome to reply below. I'd be happy to answer them for you.
Good morning. Your statement of "use the trial version for good as a workaround", by "for good" do you mean the trial version never expires? And it doesn't require a subscription?
You will need a workaround to do so. You should contact @Fiat Lux - ASIA for details.
Let me provide key points about the trial version of QuickBooks Desktop, OSC1900.
A trial version in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) refers to a limited-time software version that potential users can download and use for free to evaluate its features and capabilities.
We can utilize this version for 30 days duration. During that period, users can explore the software and decide if it meets their needs.
Overall, the trial version of QuickBooks Desktop allows users to test the software's suitability for their business. Once the trial period expires, we can purchase a license to continue using the software.
Moreover, before downloading a 30-day trial of QuickBooks Desktop, make sure to check the software operating requirements for the best experience.
