SunTrust Bank merged with Truist Bank and now I can't import new transactions (either manually or by default). I keep getting error code OL-222. instead of finding the problem that many customers will be having in the coming days because of the merger, I was told to buy a new copy of QuickBooks (I'm using QB Pro 2021) or buy a support subscription. Why do I have to buy ANYTHING else? I am furious! I have read through previous discussions about code OL-222 and tried most all recommended fixes and nothing is working. Does anyone have a recent fix for this issue that worked?

Hi there, @Nora12. I can assist you with how to get rid of the error OL-222 in QuickBooks Desktop.
QuickBooks received an invalid response from the financial institution's server, resulting in Error OL-222. When you try to import one or more characters, this happens.
You'll need to fix the following unsupported characters in the.QBO file that are causing this error:
There may also be an issue with Web Connect if you get one of these warnings when downloading or importing transactions from your bank:

I had this issue. Here is what is wrong & the Solution to fix it. You must have access to Excel or similar spreadsheet software to fix it. The qbo file has the word DEPOSIT as the <TRNTYPE> for all of the Suntrust transactions before the merger. The OFX <TRNTYPE> CODE SHOULD BE DEP . Not the word DEPOSIT . Also the & characters in some of the <NAME> Are also not valid characters for OFX qbo files. Example: AT&T will be named AT&T.
To fix these unrecognized OFX codes, 1) right click on the qbo download file.
2) click OPEN WITH . Click Excel( from the Dropdown list) If there is no list you will have to choose a app/program to open this file with…Choose Find an App on the. Pop up box, then find your Excel program & open it.
what opens is a long string of commands in the A column.
3) Press Control F.
4) In the search box type DEPOSIT & hit Find ALL.
5) Click the Replace with tab & type DEP
6) Click. replace all.
7) In the search box type & then click Find All
8) on every line containing those characters, you will remove only the & characters. For Example BB&T will be changed to BBT.. AT&T will become ATT…
9)One more thing in addition to the … any line with over 30 letters I would edit to 20.
10) After correcting , CLICK SAVE.
11) Now import qbo into Quickbooks web connect.
Quickbooks doesn’t need to be in classic Bank mode either. Hope this helps you. It took me almost two days to find the error. Truist is so slammed cause of everyone calling w/ issues with the Suntrust transactions DEPOSIT word , they were no help yesterday, they disconnected call after a long time listening to ignore music!! Thanks Truist! I think I’ll take my money elsewhere. What a debacle.
This is the magic trick! Thanks! Once I did ALL THREE of these things, it worked. The DEPOSIT to DEP was the final trick to make it happen. Had already tried a truncation in Excel to 25 characters and eliminating ampersands. Gotta do all three.
Glad this worked for you too!
Spread the word and Pay It Forward! There are millions of us out there who have this issue and are searching for the solution. And don't forget, to switch from Classic mode to Express mode in your Checking Preferences for manual importing and the FREE - NO LOGIN- BANK FEEDS. I'm wondering how many people thought their issue was because they didn't have a Direct Connect subscription w/ Truist and signed up. They now paid $14.95, and still have a screwed up data file with the same error code... . YES... Web Connect manual .qbo import is FREE!!! Cancel that Direct Connect subscription people! Get your money back!
Truist should be ashamed and embarrased. The poor Quickbooks helpers have been bombarded with angry users ( cause they think its the Quickbooks program) when it is really Truist's data merger disaster.
Truist should be held accountable for the countless amount of hours we all lost from their IT Dept failure to do their job. Calling Truist was even a bigger waste of time. I was disconnected after waiting a LONG time on music ignore...Granted, everyone was calling Truist trying to get the solution. Time is Money!
Because of this disaster, I'm done with Truist!! I'm moving my accounts to another bank!!
I have the same problem. Weird thinking about this is I have two different trurist accounts. it works just fine in one account but not the second account and they both company file is located on the same desktop using same version of QuickBooks. I have tried all this text Edit trick and non of it works. I even download QBooks2022 trial version and still getting same error. Someone please fix it.

Let's work together to get rid of that banking error, @JaxBizGuy.
I'm here to provide additional troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue. Before we begin, ensure that you're using a supported version of the program, your internet explorer is updated to the latest version and secure a backup copy of your file.
Once done, download a copy of your Web Connect file from your bank's website. Ensure that this is a .qbo file. If not, here's how you can import one. When verified, see if you still encounter the error.
If yes, I'd suggest accessing your bank's website to review some notifications such as verification requests. If this is not the case, I recommend following Steps 4 to 5 of this article: Fix Web Connect import errors.
However, if the issue persists, I'd highly suggest reaching out to our Technical Support team. This way, they can further investigate the root cause of the error and provide a different way how you can resolve it.
You can also browse through this article in case you need a guide in categorizing transactions in QuickBooks Desktop: Add and match Bank Feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.
I'm just around the corner to help you in case you have any other banking concerns. Don't hesitate to post again here. Take care always and have a good one.

Thank you so much for your help, one last question, how do I reduce the number of characters in the file opened by Notepad?
I appreciate you performing the steps provided by my colleague above, @knoxbookkeeper. I’m here to share additional steps to help you with the characters in the Notepad.
Let’s start with updating your QuickBooks Desktop so you can have the latest features and fixes. We also have to make sure that you have a backup copy of your company data. You’ll want to have the most recent QuickBooks supported version.
We can then minimize or adjust the number of characters according to your preferences. I’ll show you how:
After that, you can import the file to QuickBooks Desktop. If you run into import issues, you’ll want to visit this link.
You can check out this article to learn the character limitations for fields in QuickBooks Desktop.
Keep me posted for other concerns or additional questions about the characters in QuickBooks. I'm always around to help. Keep safe.
Thank you for that important piece of information.
I was unaware that editing the qbo file in Notepad was instantaneous!
That saves a lot of time

Thank you!!!!!! I was going crazy trying to get this to work. Have you come across any other issues that prevent the file from uploading? I had 6 weeks worth or transactions to upload. I tried all 6 at once and it didn't work. I did week by week and it was working. I got to a week that didn't work. I skipped that week and kept going. I was able to get all the weeks but that one. I went day by day with week I couldn't get to work and was able to narrow it down to one day. Just wondering if you have come across any other issues. Worst case I can live with one day out of 6 weeks not working. Thanks again!!!!
Hello there, Corcoran9!
I’m glad to hear this good news that you’ve imported most of your transactions! There must be something to the ones that you weren't able to import. Let me route you to a team who can check your issue further.
Most of the reasons for a failed import are stated in the article shared by Divina_N. For example, no end tags, missing values, unusual characters, etc. If you only had a few transactions in that particular week, I suggest entering them manually.
Alternatively, you can contact our QB Desktop Support and share the file with them. They can also request a screen sharing session to get more information about the issue so this will be investigated further.
The QuickBooks Team is always available for any other questions you may have. Good evening!
I did all three of these things and it didn't work. When I save the excel file, isn't it saving as a txt file, not qbo?
FYI - I was just told by a Truist agent, at [Removed phone number], that Truist no longer supports QuickBooks online and it will no longer connect to the software.
The only way will be to manually import the transactions.
Now I have ruined software and a ruined bank.
are you serious? and they didn't let their customers know this was coming??
