We can perform a few troubleshooting steps so we can successfully e-file your form, Dave.

Let's ensure that QuickBooks Desktop and both payroll tax table is updated to the latest release. This way, recent features and fixes will be installed to help fix the issue.

Here's how to update QuickBooks:

  1. Go to the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. From Update Now tab you can select the Reset Update checkbox to clear all previous update downloads.
  3. Select Get Updates to start the download.
  4. When the download finishes, restart QuickBooks.
  5. Accept the option to install the new release when prompted.

Then, you can follow these steps on how to electronically file your state W-2s.

  1. Open your company file.
  2. Click the Employees menu and select Payroll Tax Forms & W-2s > Process Payroll Forms.
  3. Under the File Forms section, select the state worksheet.
  4. Review the Select Filing Period year and change if necessary.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Review and fill out the worksheet and select Check for errors to make sure everything is correct.
  7. Click E-file and enter your email address and contact info.
  8. Select Submit.

If the same thing happens I suggest reaching out to us so we can help you look into your payroll setup and e-services. Feel free to check out these articles that will help you manage your state payroll taxes:

I've been on support and they uncorrupted my files, but I still don't think the release has been added

yet for NC efile.  Is that correct?

In fact, the above steps to reset updates, update QB, and then electronically file the NC state W-2 forms DOES NOT WORK. It is STILL greyed out and not able to be selected.

Will this be fixed before the end of January, or should we proceed with generating our electronic filing using the old Excel macro way - in spite of the email sent out and the response here on the forum saying otherwise?

Hi there, @charlie3531

As per the QuickBooks Latest payroll news and updates that this update includes e-filing and e-pay options that were removed for North Carolina. Though, QuickBooks Payroll releases payroll updates throughout the year. All the tax table releases are based on federal and state changes on tax calculations and payroll forms.

In the meantime you can continue with generating electronic filing using the old Excel macro.

For additional information and details on printing W-2s, I've added a couple articles below:

You can also check this link for more details: Latest payroll news and updates

So again - even though the update says it now supports e-filing in North Carolina, that option is still in fact grayed out and unable to be selected. This is after all updates to Quickbooks and to Payroll. See attached .jpg for screen capture of grayed out e-file option.

Thanks,

-Charlie

I want to make sure you can e-file your North Carolina W-2 forms in QuickBooks Desktop, @charlie3531.

Since you're unable to e-file your NC W-2 forms even though the latest updates include this option, let's perform some troubleshooting steps to get this available.

Firstly, you'll want to make sure your payroll tax table is updated. Once done, let's revalidate your payroll service key to refresh your payroll subscription. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Employees menu, then select My Payroll Service.
  2. Click Manage Service Key.
  3. In the QuickBooks Service Keys window, tap Edit and enter your service key.
  4. Click Next, then Finish.
  5. Select OK.

If you get the same result, let's run the repair tool to help fix company issues in QuickBooks Desktop. Let me guide you how.

  1. Download the latest QuickBooks Tool Hub
  2. Open the QuickBooks Tool Hub, then select Program Problems
  3. Select Quick Fix my Program.

If the issue persists, I recommend reaching out to our QuickBooks Support Team. This way, they can further investigate this matter and provide in-depth troubleshooting steps to get the e-file option available for NC W-2 forms.

Once the e-file option isn't greyed out, learn from this article on how to submit your W-2 forms to the Federal and state agencies: File your W-2 forms.

Please know that I'm just a reply away if you need further assistance e-filing your W-2 forms. Wishing you all the best, @charlie3531.

Your instructions are useless. I tried 3 times and they cannot help me to resolve my issues. When is NC W2 efiling feature is available???

What's wrong with QB Desktop Enhanced Payroll? I am so frustrated. Spent 3 evenings calling QB Payroll support and for three times, the technician spent so much time "checking resources" that QB system cut off our communication and the feature of sharing screen with an Agent.

Can some please help me???

Hi, cyndy1.

To ensure you're able to file your W-2 Forms, make sure you're able to download the latest tax table update. You can follow the steps below:

  1. Click Employees at the top menu bar and choose Get Payroll Updates.
  2. Select the Download Entire Update checkbox.
  3. Hit Update. A window appears when the download is complete.

Once done, you can e-file the forms again:

  1. From Process W-2s, select All Employees to file by batch.
  2. From the Select Filing Period section, enter the year of the form you’re filing, and select OK.
  3. In the Select Employees for Form W-2/W-3 window, select the employees. You can also select Mark All to select all employees displayed.
  4. Select E-File Federal Forms.
  5. Enter your business phone number and email address.
  6. Select Submit.

For you reference, see this article: File your W-2 forms.

Let me know if you have any other concerns. I'll be around to help.

I'm still trying to efile my NC w-2's for 2021.  I've tried all these issues.  Sent my files to quickbooks to uncorrupt them and still will not allow my to efile the the State W-2's.  Has this option been reinstated for NC.  Has anyone been able to efile there W-2's to NC?

Help.

Dave, I have the same issue - trying to efile NC W2 - QB does NOT create the .txt file (like it used to). I have contacted tech support several times and all failed. Finally, a tech told me that QB currently has an issue with the software and is working with the IRS to resolve the issue. No notification from QB on when it is to be resolved.

Very frustrated as deadline is approaching. QB has not even posted a notice to their clients unless clients contacted its tech support.

I am using the file forms State W-2s worksheet. You have to manage filing methods first and choose efile for NC3.

The State W2 worksheet is similar to the regular W2 worksheet where you click through and then click efile.

Then I have been efiling the NC3 annual form.

My e-filings status audit trail is showing accepted by NCDOR for all the clients I have been efiling.

I'm in QB 2022 with the latest payroll update.

Here's what is working for me.

  • May need to update: Manage Filing Methods to make sure NC3 is now “efile”
  • Click payroll center & file forms tab and select State W2s NC state worksheet (efile only)
  • Choose correct year. Open draft.  “Submit form”. Efile
  • Then do the same for the NC3.
  • The audit trail is showing accepted by NCDOR for both

I'm using latest payroll update in QB Enhanced PR for accountants 2022.

As of today, the feature of NC W2 efiling is still NOT available. I tried all the instructions provided - such as Updates, Service Key... Still not working. Fruitless to call tech support as they know nothing. Called tech support numerous and they have NO Clue of what's going on with their own product.

10 more days left to efile NC W2 and still no solution.
