harley c - I was told I'd get a callback on the L&I issue, but it never happened.      Again, completely unacceptable customer service from this company.

can you share what information you had to provide to get them to correct it? And confirm the correction now is working?

what information did you send to get them to fix this? Is the tax calculating by hour now?

I'm sorry - I meant that they fixed the WA PFML sharing percentage between employer and employee.  They have still not fixed the WA Worker's comp fields. 🤬🤬🤬

I spent all morning in a chat with QB that concluded with them telling me I need to contact L&I! ??? I did that even though I knew it was going to be fruiteless. L&I says they've always done the rate by hour and they have no way of calculating it as a percentage. This is so irritating!

jd_isle - they told me to contact L&I too.  Like the state is going to change the way they do it!

I'm wondering if I should just leave it as is, and keep using the rates for 2023.  Our rate went up slightly, amounting to roughly $2.20 per employee, per month.  So I won't be over-withholding from employees, and the payroll tax expense will be 'settled up' in the G/L once I file for the quarter.

Thoughts?

Hello there, @JenG.

I understand that you had requested a call back from our support team earlier. As you haven't received any response, I suggest you contact them again. They can guide you on how to enter tax rates in QBO, as it is currently using percentages instead of dollar amounts.

To reach them, follow the steps below:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Go to Help (?).
  3. Select Contact Us.
  4. Enter your concern, then select Let's Talk.
  5. Choose a way to connect with us:
    • Start a chat with a support expert.
    • Get a callback from the next available expert.

For their support hours, see this link: Contact Payroll Support.

Additionally, I'll be sharing these resources that will help you pay and file WA workers' compensation in QuickBooks:

If you have any follow-up questions about handling Washington (WA) workers' compensation or any concerns in QuickBooks, please add them to this thread. I'll be more than happy to help.

@JoesemM your response indicates you are also not understanding the problem.    This is not about a tax notice.  This is about the Washington Workers Compensation tax rate.   Quickbooks only allows a percentage to be entered in rate field.   The Washington rate is NOT A PERCENTAGE.  It should be a rate of dollars per hour (i.e. $.3663 per hour) - as it ALWAYS has been.  Quickbooks changed the format for 2024 - it was FINE before now.     All they need to do is change the field back to a dollar per hour rate!    Why is this so difficult for everyone at QB to understand?????   And yet QB keeps increasing our subscription cost.  🤬

Hello. @JenG.

I completely understand the importance of having a rate field specifying the dollars per hour instead of a percentage. Please know that we truly value your feedback and are always striving to improve our services to provide the best possible experience for our customers.

QuickBooks Online Payroll (QBOP) currently displays only the percentage and not the dollar per hour functionality. However, we are constantly working towards improving our product and hope to provide this feature shortly by submitting direct feedback to our Product Development Team. They might add this to our future product updates.

You might want to be in the loop about QBO system updates. Feel free to click this link: QuickBooks Blog.

For additional questions about managing your payroll deductions, don't hesitate to reply to this post. I'll be willing to help.

@ArielI  can you explain the reason why the rates have always been in the form of a dollar amount, until  just now in 2024?   Why was this change made??    All prior years have been a dollar amount rate.   I simply don't understand the reason for the programming change.

@JessT  I've ALREADY spent several hours, on both chat and phone, with the so-called  'support' team - yet NOONE can actually fix it.   Every Quickbooks moderator and team member on this thread have suggested the same thing over and over again, but none of the suggestions OR the support team have actually solved the problem.   FIX IT!!!!  It's very concerning when Quickbooks customers know the software better than Quickbooks employees and 'experts'.........

@JessT - is there any hope of QBO fixing the workers comp field to allow a dollar amount instead of a percentage amount?  I really need to know now.  The fees to use your payroll service keep being raised, but now because of this change, you are forcing me to find a new payroll service because it will not work for an employer in Washington State .  It does not make sense to all of the sudden not let us put in the dollar amount.  You are costing employers more money because we cannot enter the correct rate.

Hello hb11,

Being able to enter a worker's compensation by amount would be advantageous, particularly for customers who see it as a valuable feature.

As of now, this option is unavailable in QuickBooks Online. With that, I suggest sending Feedback to our developer's team. Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon.
  2. Under PROFILE, select Feedback.
  3. Type in a few words to describe your suggestion.
  4. Click Next.

For now, you'll have to convert the total worker's compensation amount to a percentage.

Moreover, I've added this article as your guide to paying employees: Run payroll.

I'm always around whenever you have concerns about managing employees.

@Adrian_A   Most importantly - WHY was the functionality changed in the first place?   Prior to 2024 it was ALWAYS a dollar amount!  Why won't ANYONE at Quickbooks answer this question?!  It's beyond unacceptable that no one at Quickbooks knows how this happened and can figure out how to fix it.   You will lose every one of your Washington state customers!

I will be canceling my payroll service tonight. They've really dropped the ball with this. I spent 3 hours in chat fixing my WA PFML rate and then again to try and update the workers comp rate. It wasn't until after that I realized I had entered a percentage and not dollar amount. There is NO WAY that I am wasting any more time with this company. This isn't the first time I've wasted hours with customer service over issues with changing my rates. As someone else mentioned, I also had to submit my documents as evidence of the new rates. I also had to provide evidence that I am exempt from paying my portion of the WA PFML (less than 50 employees). I will not waste another minute on this company, except to cancel my service. Everyone else in WA ought to do the same. Such a large company, it is unacceptable that they don't have their sh*t together and give such a runaround for paying customers.

@bugoutgirl  your experience was exactly the same as mine - hours on the phone/chat to first fix the PFML, and then the battle with this stupid Workers Comp rate.    But I don't have time to switch to a new service right now - people need to be paid.  I think QB banks on this, that customers won't make the effort to switch.  Mid-year switch can be a nightmare -  we have 401K, deductions for benefits, PTO, Sick, UTO  yada yada.  Such an enormous hassle and time-waster.      But I am definitely gonna start shopping around.  This is utter nonsense and incompetence.   🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

@JenG @It really is a wonder how they get away with this. And the bot like responses in this thread really are something else. Last night I signed up with Paychex Flex. It took a couple hours to get my info added (and thankfully I only have one employee) but I was able to get it set up so that she can get paid tomorrow on time! And direct deposit, too! It's included in the monthly plan. Also, they pull all of the deduction rates automatically, all you have to do is punch in your state ID number. They verify all of it prior to releasing the payroll, after you submit it! As a side note, I called their customer service twice and was put immediately through to someone who resolved my questions in minutes. I couldn't believe it! Good luck to you, I hope you figure something out

@bugoutgirl  thank you for the feedback!  I have 60 employees, so the thought of switching now is so nightmarish.  I am working on payroll now, and will just use the 2023 L&I rates - they only changed slightly, so I'll have to settle up when I file 4th Qtr.    I am SO over this - like you, over the years I've spent hours on chat/phone for payroll issues.  And 99% of the time I have to explain basic payroll and accounting principles to the 'experts'  - I might as well do their jobs for them.   UGHHHH.   Thanks for the encouragement!

Check out https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/employees-and-payroll/setting-up-worker-s-comp-for....  AudreyP posted yesterday that she ignored the percent sign and entered the rates.  Her payroll calculated correctly.  I confirmed this solution works. QB needs to remove the percent sign for WA employees.

Has anyone figured out a work around for L&I or workers comp for Washington??  I see most comments are from the beginning of the year. I was hoping someone knew a trick.

Thanks for chiming in on this thread, @jaciet62.

I can see how this benefits you and other users if QuickBooks (QBO) Payroll can enter dollar amounts in L&I for Washington Sate worker's compensation rates.

Please know that this isn't possible at the moment. Thus, we follow formulas for calculations. If you haven't done so, please send this suggestion to our Product Developers so they can consider this feature in future product updates.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon and choose Feedback.
  2. Enter your feedback Suggestion.
  3. Press Next.

You can read this article to learn more about setting up, changing, paying, and filing WA workers' compensation (also called L&I) in QBO Payroll: Set up and manage Washington (WA) workers' compensation.

I'm also adding this resource that might be useful if you want to run payroll reports in QBO to help you track your business: Run payroll reports in QuickBooks Online Payroll
