So my system ask me if I want to install the QB update..when I do, I can no longer open QuickBooks. It opens and closes immediately. Ran QBToolHub..no avail. Agent recommended repair from Windows Programs & Feature...nope. R&R and It comes up asking for registration - 30 day temp. I register, install update and it does it again...fails to STAY OPEN. I see it flash as if it wants to open but it closes immediately. So ever time I perform the INSTALL UPDATE, it does the same thing...2021 Enterprise version

I can no longer access my client's QB file because I disregarded the notice saying "you must log in as system administrator", since my client has no idea how to do that or what the system administrator password is. I access their file remotely, as they are in Portland and I am in Los Angeles. What are steps to reopen the file, as we are now effectively out of business. I tried calling support, was told the office is closed.
Thanks for joining the thread, ml1237.
I'm here to help you with opening the company file for your client.
There are times when the company file won't open and no error message or warning. If you want to access QuickBooks files on a host or server computer, windows may prompt you to enter a network password. If this happens, you can either log in using the network password or turn off the feature. Do this on the server or host computer. I'll show you how.
Then, you can locate and open the company file:
You can review this article for more detailed information: Open a company file located on a remote computer.
If the issue persists, you can follow the extra troubleshooting procedures outlined in this resource: What to do if you can't open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.
In addition, I've added this material if you need to add, edit, or remove user's access in QuickBooks Desktop: QuickBooks Desktop Users and Restrictions.
You can count on me if you need further assistance opening the company file. Just leave a comment below, and I'll get back with more details.
Make THAT "3" of us...only I have Premier 19!!!!!
Hey there, @robertheit.
Thanks for following the thread and letting us know that you're also having trouble opening the company file.
I wanted to ask if you have tried the steps provided by my colleague Giovann listed above? If not, I encourage you to give them a try. Those are typically the best steps to take when having issues getting into the company file remotely. Ensuring the networking and file sharing is set up properly is key to opening the company file from different computers/users.
However, if you have gave those steps a shot, are you getting an specific error message? If so, could you share a screenshot?
I want to make sure we get you back on track to get you back to business. Please provide any additional details that you can. This way, I can know what route to take based on what you've tried and haven't.
I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your reply and look forward to chatting with you soon. Take care!
This blog article is a gem. We used it to workaround having a mandatory update on Friday during business hours, to defer to the weekend. This after waiting on hold with Intuit support for 45 minutes for them to tell me it could not be done. Cheers!
Our customers have the option to log in as administrator (call us and get us to install the update), or "Close Quickbooks". This is unacceptable. We are recommending that they "Close Quickbooks" permenantly, and buy a different accounting program. Thanks Intuit.
If you are dealing with a forced QB patch/update, the kind of update with a countdown, where you have no more attempts to install, and only a "Close Quickbooks" button, here's how you can work around it below. This can buy you some time to upgrade the site and possibly disable auto updates moving forward.
CTRL-ALT-DEL
Task Manager
Find the Quickbooks process, expand the child process and terminate "Quickbooks Update Service" by ending task.
thank you, the issue has been resolved.
I have multiple users complaining they can't log in or do anything because they don't have the required permissions to install an update. They just get a prompt that says "Close Quickbooks." They're running the same version as the server, and other users on that same version can log in. If I log in as a system administrator and try to launch Quickbooks, it just says to reboot the computer no matter how many times I do that. I am not taking my entire site down in the middle of the day to download and install updates because of some feature you're trying to push that we're obviously not using because we haven't had it until now. The second we find something better we are dropping QB and not looking back because the constant interruptions and intrusions are intolerable.
Thanks for following this thread, Steve_SHP.
Let me help ensure other users can install the QuickBooks. We’ll have to update the desktop program directly to the website and download the web patch from there.
Here’s how:
If the issue persists, perform a clean installation of the desktop program to start fresh. You can browse this article for detailed instructions: Clean install QuickBooks Desktop.
If none of these suggestions work, I recommend contacting our Technical Support Team. They’ll help you sign up to the list to receive email updates. This is also to ensure you’re in the loop about the progress of the investigation.
To reach them:
For future reference, let me share an article that will walk you through the process of how to: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release. I have more that one version of QuickBooks on my computer and I can now only get into 2019. This needs to be fixed?
I have had the red ! for over 2 weeks. It says update waiting and to close QB and restart my computer to fix. I have done that too many times to count and it still does not get rid of this red ! It appears that I have the most recent update, how do I get rid of this annoying mark in the right hand corner of QB?
Hello kathyg3!
It seems that the update is not successful. Allow me to help you in fixing it.
You'll want to manually download the latest release, then install it. Follow these steps:
Once finished, close your QuickBooks Desktop, then relaunch it. Make sure to select Yes on the pop-up to install the updates.
Also, you'll want to install and run the QuickBooks File Doctor. It'll scan your QuickBooks Desktop as well as the file itself to resolve issues including installation errors.
If the same thing happens, I suggest you do a clean install of QuickBooks Desktop.
I included this article if you need help in fixing issues caused by a damaged file: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.
Keep your posts coming if you need more assistance with this. Take care!
I am having the same problem. I tried all day yesterday to log in and could not. I need my Quick Books to work. My boss is the primary user and can't remember his superuser name or password. Can someone please help me? The company name is Craft Office Plus. The owner is Jimmy Craft.
Thanks,
Kathy
I don't have the option to install later. My boss does but I don't. Help please!
Thanks for sharing your situation, Kathy.
As for the details shared by my colleague Angelyn_T on this thread, the Install Later option under the QuickBooks Update Service window will not be available when a force QuickBooks update is needed. If you have the Install Now button, you'll want to click that to establish an update and open your QuickBooks program.
Otherwise, download the QuickBooks Tool Hub. This is helps to diagnose and resolve common issues when you're unable to open a company file.
Here's how:
For more information about the tool, please check out this article: Fix company file and network issues with QuickBooks File Doctor.
If you're still having the same problem after following the steps, I recommend reaching out to our Customer Care Team. They can review your account and investigate what's causing this to happen.
Please take note that our support hours for QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, and Plus starts from M-F 6 AM to 6 PM. For QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise, we're available any time, any day.

For admins who need to disable QBES from accessing the updates download folder on a large number of computers, I wrote these Windows/DOS batch files to do what is in the guide provided by @BigRedConsulting. Double click the batch files or type in their filenames in the command-line to run them. With minor modifications, they can also be run as part of login scripts or through AD if you remove the section with the choice to continue. In most cases, the scripts do not require administrative privileges (only requiring them if the QBES download folder is restricted). The scripts will effectively remove the requirement of forced updates and let users run the QBES app until an admin can get around to applying patches/updates.
The scripts are currently setup for QBES 22.0 but will probably work for past and future versions if you change the value of QB_COMPONENTS_DOWNLOAD_FOLDER to the correct path. So far I have tested them on Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016/2019.
*DISCLAIMER: The scripts comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY. Anybody can use them for whatever purpose but do so at their own risk. You are encouraged to read the scripts to understand what they do.

As usual, Intuit completely ignores IT systems management and policy and just does whatever the heck they want. More garbage from Intuit as usual.
This doesnt help me because I have a v1.1.4322 .net framework error that I can't get around and now I can't use the program that we paid for. I am purchasing a new desktop to finally solve the .net problem, but need to use quickbooks until it arrives. Is there a workaround?
