Can I convert QuickBooks to Quicken?

I've used QuickBooks for many years. I have one of the last releases before it went to a subscription. Now that I am retired, I don't need all of the QB features and I don't want to pay the $360 annual fee.

Is there a way that I can import my QuickBooks data into Quicken?

Thanks

Can I convert QuickBooks to Quicken?

I've got steps to ensure you're able to convert your QuickBooks Desktop data to Quicken, @IrisRS.

You can manually convert your data from QuickBooks Desktop to Quicken using Excel. We can start with exporting your Chart of Accounts and Vendor lists.

Export to IIF

  1. Go to the File menu, then select Utilities Export Lists to IIF Files.
  2. Mark Chart of Accounts and Vendor List, then select OK.
  3. On the Export window:
    1. From the Save in drop-down, choose the location where you want to save the IIF file (often, this will be your Desktop).
    2. In the File name field, delete the asterisk (*), then enter a file name.
    3. Select Save, then OK.

After that, you can import your information to Quicken. For the detailed steps, refer to this article and proceed to Step 2Convert from QuickBooks Desktop to Quicken.

For your future reference, you may want to convert your Quicken data to QuickBooks Desktop. Refer to this article for more info: Convert Quicken data to QuickBooks Desktop.

Post a comment below if you still need more help with converting your data in QuickBooks. I'd be happy to assist you further.

Thanks for that. One more question: Will this work if the QuickBooks data is from QuickBooks on a Windows 10 machine and it is to be imported to Quicken running on a brand new Mac airbook?

Yes, it'll work. It doesn't matter if you're using Mac as you'll using an Excel file when converting your data from QuickBooks Desktop to Quicken.

Why does it tell me to only select those 2 export items? If I am moving the database to a new computer and discontinuing the old one, wouldn't I want to export everything?

Can I convert QuickBooks to Quicken?

Well, as it turns out, I also have a problem with Excel. One of the reasons I am moving from QB to Quicken, is that my old Win 10 computer is dying. All my friends use Macs, so I'm going there as well. In order to get the Win 10 machine to work at all, I had to restore a previous version. Now Excel won't run.

Why the $#@%$&* does Intuit require Excel for this conversion? Why can't Quicken load the data directly? If that is too difficult for the Intuit programmers, why not provide a simple conversion utility? I see that there are several financial apps that promise to import QB data. Now I am seriously thinking about moving not only away from Microsoft, but from Intuit as well. This infernal conversion has already cost me the better part of 2 days of my life that I will never get back. Grrrrr.....

Can I convert QuickBooks to Quicken?

Hello, @IrisRS

Thanks for following up with us and sharing your concerns.

You're right. Having a conversion tool would come in handy in so many ways. I've gone ahead and sent this suggestion to our Product Development Team. This way, our developers can review the feedback and consider it for a future update.

I also wanted to mention that Intuit no longer owns or supports Quicken. This means we can only resolve issues from the QuickBooks side of things.

Please feel free to reach back here if you have any additional questions or concerns. Take care!

I didn't know that Intuit sold Quicken. That explains a lot.

I called the QB "support" team. The guy who answered told me it was not possible to convert QB to Quicken. When I asked why, he went to check with someone who actually knows something.

About 10 minutes later, he came back and said that the "team" could do the conversion for me. If I upload the QB file, they will convert it and return it to me. He then said it would take between 5-6 hours and 2-3 days.

He also said there would be a charge. I asked how much. After some stammering, he said $7/MB. Our QB file is 107MB, so that would cost me $749!!! I couldn't see his face, but it sounded like he said that with a straight face.

Bottom line, I am completely fed up with Intuit. They are worse even than M$FT. Thanks for trying to help here, but I'll be looking for another accounting package. I see that there are several that claim to import QB data.

@IrisRS

Which QB Desktop year version do you have? You can still buy the one time license for QBD 2021 Pro or Mac edition.

Hello, CatherineS1. We're happy to extend a delightful welcome to you in the Community forum and express our gratitude for getting in touch with us. It's our priority to provide resolutions that help streamline processes for users.

You can utilize Excel to move your QuickBooks data to Quicken. It's our pleasure to walk you through the steps.

First, export your Chart of Accounts (COA) and Vendor List. Here's how:

Export to IIF

  1. Go to the File menu, then select Utilities.
  2.  Choose Export and Lists to IIF Files.
  3. A pop-up window will appear. Check the lists you'd like to export.
  4. Put the file in the location where you want to save it.

Export to Excel

  1. Go to the Vendors menu, then select Vendor Center.
  2. From the Excel drop-down, click Export Vendor List.
  3. On the Export window, select Create new worksheet: in a new workbook, then hit Export.
  4. Save the Excel sheet.

Next, export your information and address book from Quicken into a .QIF format: For the detailed steps and information, please refer to this article: Convert from QuickBooks Desktop to Quicken.

Moreover, you'll want to find a third party you can use as a migration tool. Check out this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/app/apps/home/.

I've also included this article you can refer to if you want to move your Quicken data to QuickBooks Desktop in the future: Convert Quicken data to QuickBooks Desktop.

If you encounter issues within your program, you run the verify and rebuild to find the most common issues in a company file and fix them.

You can reach back out anytime if any questions or concerns arise. We'll be here to assist you 24/7. Have a great rest of the day, CatherineS1!

If you are working solo, you can use the trial version for QBD 2021 to upgrade your version and run the bank feeds. You don't need to convert data to Quicken.

Hi,

How do you perform this step: Copy and paste your QuickBooks Desktop information into your Quicken (.QIF) file

I’m not sure how to do that so I’m stuck right now. Thanks, Mark

I’m not sure how to copy the information. Are we working with the previous step of that creates the IIF file in excel or something else? I probably will need help pasting it into my .QIF file. Is that a file that is already created via my Quicken Classic for Home and Business (Mac). Thanks for your help. Mark

Thanks for the prompt response, mrc88dal. Let me help you import and convert your QuickBooks Desktop data to Quicken Classic and Business (Mac).

Yes, you're right. Can I convert QuickBooks to Quicken?

Thanks FateCandylaneT. Just to clarify, I’m trying to import and convert my QB Desktop(Mac) not to QBO but to Quicken Classic and Business(Mac). I’ve successfully accomplished Step 1 which exports the Chart of Accounts and Vendor list to an IIF File and also exports the Vendor List from the Vendor Center to a new Excel worksheet. It is Step 2 where I’m stuck:

Step 2. Copy and paste your Quickbooks Desktop information into your Quicken QIF file? What are the files and where do I find them that make up the Quickbooks Desktop information? Where is the Quicken QIF file?

This where I’m stuck. Is instruction 1. under Step 2 basically summarizing what you should do in instruction #2? Any help explaining Instruction #1 under Step 2 is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Can I convert QuickBooks to Quicken?

Hi 4Gal,

Our organization has been using QB desktop for PC but we’re trying move to Quicken Home and Business(Mac). I’m using the Mac trial of QB Desktop for Mac. One of my colleagues converted our QB PC data to Mac QB data. Now I’m using QB’S procedure in Support (Convert from Quickbooks Desktop to Quicken) to convert my Mac QB data to Quicken data using MS Excel.
