I have a portable, bluetooth card reader and Quickbooks online. Is there any way to use the chip or swipe card reader directly from my PC? Currently I have to create the sale on the PC then open up the Go Payment app on my phone to take the payment. I realize I can create the sale on the app too but it's easier on the PC! If I can't use the portable reader, what are my options?
You've come to the right place, @Julee0717.
I can share some details about having a chip or swipe card reader that will be connected directly to your PC to take a payment.
Great news! QuickBooks Online now offers a USB card reader. You can now swipe a card on your computer. To learn on how to order it, please check out this link: USB credit card reader with QuickBooks Online.
Once you already have it, you can swipe a credit card by following these steps:

There you have it!

Thank you for the reply. Are there any plans to add a chip reader to this device? I thought that chip readers were safer than swiping?
I'd be happy to assist you today, Julee0717.
Let me provide you with some information about card readers in QuickBooks Online.
For QuickBooks Online we do have Swipe reader and Chip reader for receiving payments through our GoPayment.
Both readers are safe. We have implemented streamlined bank-level security in protecting your information, making sure that your information is yours alone. Rest assured we at Intuit place great value in safety and security.
You can more details about our chip reader here: Process payments in the GoPayment app.

Don't hesitate to let me know if you have other concerns. I'll be around.
By swiping the card, are we charged a higher processing fee?
Thanks for joining us here, Shane8.
Swiping cards will be charged 2.4% of the total amount of the transaction + 25¢ per transaction. Let me get you this link for a comparison chart: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/payments/pricing/.
I'll be around if you need anything else.
Am I correct that for a USB connection ONLY card swipers will work (none of the list of compatible USB devices are chip readers). For a chip reader you are required to use a bluetooth connection? Is there any way to get a chip reader to work on a desktop, our business can't use a phone app to take payments, but the chip readers primarily are for the phone app not for the merchantservices website.
I appreciate you for joining the thread, @TaxCatSC.

I already have quickbooks. If i already have it can i just get the card reader?
Thanks for joining this thread, @Claytons12.
To get the card reader, you’ll have to sign up for a QuickBooks Payments account and then place the order to get one. Let me show the steps to subscribe.
Once done, click this link to order the device: Mobile payments.

I bought a usb reader from you- it's swipe only, no dip.
That's not what I wanted or what is best practices- I'm out $69 for a piece of obsolete tech.
It was also a pain to order.
I have no receipt email- I have no invoice number-
I don't want my employees to have to use their phones to accept a card- and I want to dip- not swipe.
What is the problem here? Dips are less risky for chargebacks and not easily spoofed.
Please- fix this- or tell me how to return this until you get modern technology- $69 for a USB reader is robbery.
Hello there, @The Next Wave.
This isn't the kind of service we want you to experience in buying a USB reader from us. Since the USB reader, you bought isn't the one you wanted, I'd suggest contacting our Customer Support Team. They can guide you in the process of returning the USB reader and check why you haven't received a receipt email and invoice number.
To reach them, please follow the steps below:

There is no Help icon in the upper right of the screen.
Therefore I can't select contact.
I can share some options to make sure you can contact our support team, @The Next Wave.
First, let's fix the Help icon issue you have. You can begin by accessing your account using a private browser. Unlike a regular browser, this session doesn't store any cache that causes unexpected QuickBooks Online (QBO) behavior.
Here are the helpful shortcut keys you can use to access one:
Once there, please follow the steps given by my peer above. You can also use our test drive to perform the said task.
Otherwise, you can use another link to get in touch with one of our representatives. I can share with you the steps to make this process a breeze.
Here's how:

Once you've successfully returned your USB card reader, please know that you can order it anytime in the future.

I'm still up and running to answer more USB reader concerns you may have. Feel free to comment back below so I can assist you further.
I am in the same boat. I moved from Quickbooks Enterprise to Quickbooks Online Advanced. I have 18 employees using QB online on their individual desktop computers. I want them to be able to receive physical credit card payments at their desktops. Therefore, I called quickbooks support, they sent me 5 card readers that can accept chip and swipe only, they said the black round hockey puck style that also has the apple pay and tap feature would not be compatible for my desktops. $250 + $149 2-day shipping later, the readers are only good for "gopayment" from bluetooth phones. Called support again, they said the black round hockey puck will work so you can accept chip and tap. This time ordered 2 ($129) later. Guess what, still won't work on a desktop. Only for "gopayment" via cell phone. I am fed up with support that does not have any real expertise, but instead reads off of a screen the same information we can get if we did the leg work. What are y'all good for if we continue to order these products that are not doing what we clearly asked for them to do. It is frustrating, time wasting, and regretful to still be at the same point; which is not being able to accept a payment properly in 2022. Credit card companies do not side with the merchant if the credit card is keyed in or swiped (both the only options via a desktop computer that quickbooks online offers)
I will go back to accepting my credit cards through merchant card terminals and manually entering the "receive payment" on quickbooks. QUICKBOOKS/INTUIT, when y'all get your act together and make your merchant service abilities include having a USB attached card reader that can accept swipe, chip, and tap feature. You will have many business owners move to your company for merchant services in lieu of using 3rd party merchant service.
Great post Flooring Guy!
I decided to check back to see if Intuit has made any advances so we can process cards via our PC's and laptop without bothering with the Go Payment. Apparently, we're all still relegated to the 90's or forced to use the Go Payment, which is a bit clumsy at best. All we want to do is swipe, insert a chip or go touchless via a USB cord into our Pc's or laptops.
It seems like this shouldn't be that hard for a company this size with so many small business users....
FlooringGuy is so right. Same issue here.
It's May 2023, and I am still looking for an option to take a payment with my computer and not a cell phone app. I've talked to Merchant Services, Small Business Consultants, 6 people in total. They just keep transferring me to the next person. If any of them does have an answer, it is only that we buy the mobile card reader. When I say I want it to connect to the computer not my phone, they seem stumped. How is it this difficult? This seems like a simple request, and something that was once available. It is costing us 1% more to type the card in, and that adds up fast! Time to switch to a different card processor. This level of customer service is completely unacceptable.
Hi I hav quickbooks online and I have the QuickBooks Chip and Magstripe Card Reader. I have connected my reader to my desktop but I want to swipe or tap the customer's card when taking payment on the desktop and not have to switch to a mobile device. Is this possible?
Hi there, Kim.
I understand that processing payments directly using card reader on your desktop without needing to switch to a mobile device is more convenient. However, a direct connection to a desktop via cord only enables the Swipe method. When you connect the QuickBooks Chip and Magstripe Card to the GoPayment app, you can use it for tapping and swiping.
I encourage you to submit feedback about the limitation:
You can also check about updating card readers for your additional reference.
Feel free to go back to this thread if you have morewuestions mind. Take care and have a good one!
You raise your rates and "upgrade" services and then we pay more for services we don't need but you don't bother to actually do what users are asking for. Other companies use current technology to take payments and your answer is not satisfactory to only using a card swipe. Get with the program Intuit as you are not customer service friendly 99% of the time... except when people want to get new services or want to pay you more money for upgrades. Once this ball is rolling you will do all you can to get the money.... service after the facts is laughable.
