Does anyone have any links to description of Quickbooks error codes (what they are, how to fix)?
Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, there were these things called software manuals that went into great detail about the functionality of the product and gave detailed descriptions of things such as error codes.
I've searched the Quickbooks site, Quickbooks Help, and Google all to no avail. Apparently "Error codes" or "Error code list" is too much for Intuit's search to comprehend. Same for "Error 165" or "Error 292".
I did a Verify/Rebuild and saw a number of errors on our Rebuild report. "See Online Article" next to the error types sends one to a page: "Small Business Answers and Information has moved"
Clicking the next link to go to the next location takes one to a generic support page. Searching there doesn't reveal anything either.
Doesn't anyone at Intuit actually use their own software and see this stuff? How hard is it to have a linked list of error codes and what they mean?
Dear Support people: Please do not post a reply that tells me to contact Support. I shouldn't have to just to see a list of error codes. If you want to provide a link of error codes, that's great. Don't tell me to call. Also, I find that support can't handle anything other than the most basic issues.
So, back to the original question: Does anyone have a list of error codes, what they mean, and possible causes/solutions?
Hey there, @DUCKS495.
It's great to see you back in the Community. This isn't the impression I want to leave you with.
I can provide you with a list of error codes and what they mean so you don't have to contact support. Review this guide to see them: Status codes in response messages.
I hope that you're able to get an explanation of the error code that you may be receiving. Please inform me of the details you gather from it. I'll be back around shortly to ensure all of your concerns are addressed. Have a splendid afternoon!
Thank you for the attempt, but the link does not have any of the errors that the Verify/Rebuild processes generated.
To be clear, a Rebuild report shows the following errors:
Error 136
Error 165
Error 292
Error 293
The list you kindly provided does not have these errors listed. The error message itself does not give a good explanation of what it is. The link that appears next to the Error Summary (Ex: Error 136 (2) See Offline Article) points to a page that has moved. The next link in the chain is just a generic support page. Searching on the error does nothing.
It shouldn't be this hard.
Hey again, @DUCKS495.
Thanks for reaching back out to me. I appreciate you letting us know that the list of errors didn't help and that your error wasn't listed on the site.
With everything being said, the only list of error codes and explanations is the one I provided you with. To get an answer to why is are appearing when using the Verify and Rebuild tool, I recommend contacting our Customer Support Team. They'll be able to use advanced tools to look at the back end of your account. Here's how:
If you can't get into the product, you can use this link: Chat.
Let me know how it goes. Should you need any further assistance, don't hesitate to ask. I'm only a post away if you need me. Have a great day!
No.
One of my client's files keeps getting the same error messages, pretty much daily. Supposedly the software has "fixed the issue," but obvoiusly not. It does not matter which machine I do a back up from, the client's desktop, my MS Surface or my office desktop.... same error. Find it laughable that we cannot get a decent explaination about the error codes so we can fix the problem without QB Support having to dial into our computers - not happening on my machines.
Hi, Amy.
It's my priority to give you and your client the best possible experiences while working with QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). Thus, I'm here to share with you the troubleshooting steps to isolate and fix these error messages.
Error codes or notifications happen when the QuickBooks data is damaged or the company file can't be read correctly by QuickBooks. To resolve these errors, you can start by installing the QuickBooks Tool Hub and fix the file from there. For the best experience, it's recommended to use the Tool Hub on Windows 10, 64-bit.
Then, follow these steps to run the Quick Fix my File.
You can also follow the additional solutions from this link to narrow down the result: Fix company file and network issues with QuickBooks File Doctor.
If the error continues, I suggest repairing your QuickBooks Desktop or uninstall and reinstall QuickBooks using the clean install process. This tool can help fix common errors right away and get back to business smoothly.
I'm also adding this link as your reference in fixing QuickBooks installation issues: Fix QuickBooks Desktop install errors .
If you have any other follow-up questions, please let me know by adding a comment below. I'm more than happy to help. Keep safe always!
Is your client using QBD Pro/Premier? How big is the file size?
I am getting the exact same error codes.
I agree. I have the same error codes. I don't understand why they are not able to tell us what the codes mean. If QuickBooks has an error code listed then it should also have an explanation. This is very poor customer support.
I know that this hasn't been easy for you, corky3293.
I would love to help you fix these errors.
Can you tell me where your company file is saved? These errors usually occur when your company file is located on a network. We can run a series of troubleshooting steps to make sure that your file is free of any possible data damage. Before doing so, let's ensure that your is up-to-date with the latest release.
Let's start by utilizing our QuickBooks Tool Hub. You can follow the steps provided by my peers Angelyn_T to install and run these tools. This will scan your file and resolve some data errors. If still the same, you can restore your most recent backup copy. Let me walk you through the steps.
You can check this guide here for your reference: Restore a backup of your company file.
If the steps won't work, let's suppress QuickBooks Desktop. This helps determine if the issue is with the data or the software itself.
Here's how:
If the issue persists, I'd suggest reaching out to our QuickBooks Support Team . They have the tools to do a screen sharing to further investigate the root cause of it.
You can also check this resource here for more insights: Repairing your QuickBooks Desktop.
Feel free to let us know if you need more assistance with fixing the QuickBooks error. We're always here to lend you a helping hand. Have a great day.
I agree with corky3293. All I want to know right now is WHAT THE ERROR CODE MEANS. From there, I can figure out whether I need to contact support or if it's something I can investigate myself. Quickbooks is SO frustrating!!!
Thanks for chiming in on this thread, AP2021.
For now, we can only share the general info about these errors and the troubleshooting steps that is required to resolve them.
As per my colleague Giovann_G, you'll encounter these errors when your company file is located on a network.

Why can't you just say what the error codes are and what they mean? I have error code 190 and 179 in my rebuild. Please explain these to me???
Why arent these error code listed?
Mine are 190 & 179 and can not find them anywhere. The online article tells me nothing at all!!
I appreciate you for sharing the error codes you received, Kathy.
The error codes are not inclusive in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). You may encounter errors that are not listed in the articles. Rest assured the troubleshooting steps provided in the article can help us isolate and fix the issue. I'll be glad to guide you how.
Before we begin, you'll want to ensure your QBDT is updated to the latest release. This way, we can ensure the system is running on the newest features and fixes.
When ready, you'll want to download our QuickBooks Tool Hub tool and run the Quick Fix my Program to resolve this. Here's how.
You can also refer to the steps provided in this article: Fix company file and network issues with QuickBooks File Doctor.
If this is not the case, I suggest running a clean install. This fixes any company files issues.
You're always welcome to get back to me if you have any other follow-up questions about error codes in QBDT. I'll be here ready to answer them for you. Keep safe!
I totally agree with all here . . . I just want to know what the particular Error Codes mean after a Verify and Rebuild. They are pretty consistent numbers so not sure on that earlier comment. I'm NOT looking for support or Tool Hub walk thru, just what the codes mean so we can determine what might have happened to be more proactive in our future solutions! I also get Error 179, Error 73, Error 21.
Little confused here . . . why would they not be inclusive to the Error Code List since it appears similar codes are being asked about here.

Hello, ljw8.
Let me explain what those errors mean you've encountered in QuickBooks Desktop.
The errors you've encountered usually appear when there's damage to the company file and a corrupted QuickBooks Data file (.QBW). And QuickBooks Desktop logs when you rebuild them through the QBWin.log file.
However, If you follow the recommended steps and it did not work for you. I highly recommend contacting our Phone Support Team. This way, they can further investigate this matter and create an investigation ticket if other users experiencing the same. They can also provide additional troubleshooting steps to get this resolved.
Here's how:

Get back to me if there's anything you need assistance with. I'm a few clicks away to help. Have a good day and stay safe!
This absolutely does NOT answer the question about what the error codes mean!! This is a simple question which should have a very simple answer. Why QB refuses to divulge the code meanings is beyond me. Ridiculous.
Wow. The incompetency is staggering. Maybe this will help? -

Hello,
I also would like to know what is causing these errors, so I can prevent them from occurring.
I am hosted by RightNetworks, so the solutions you have suggested is not something I can preform without contacting RightNetworks.
If I knew what is causing the errors, maybe I can make changes to stop have so many of them.
I am using Enterprise 2020.
@Carolina99 wrote:I am hosted by RightNetworks, so the solutions you have suggested is not something I can preform without contacting RightNetworks.
You have to ask RN to fix it. Did they refuse your request?
Hi there, @Carolina99.
As mentioned by my colleagues above, errors usually occur when the QuickBooks data is damaged. Or the company file can't be read correctly by QuickBooks. And to fix this issue, you can install the QuickBooks Tool Hub and resolve the file from there.

Then, run the Quick Fix my File tool. Here's how:
If you still get an error message, continue with the troubleshooting steps starting with Step 3 in this article: Fix company file and network issues with QuickBooks File Doctor.
If the error continues, you can utilize the Rebuild Data tool. It's a built-in tool that can help automatically fix data issues with your company file. For the step-by-step guide, please see this article: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file.
Please let me know if you have additional questions about this or anything else. I'll be more than happy to help. Take care always.
