I Had to buy new 2021 version of QB that promised that it would properly do 1099NEC, but when I go to File/Print forms/choose 1099,1096 I choose 1099 update and all I get is an error message that tells me to go to a web browser window that tells me nothing...getting very frustrated at the ongoing saga of trying to print 1099NEC’s
I can see the urgency of getting this resolved, TreeDown.
I've checked that you've posted many times here in the Community forum in which you've stated the specific error message you've encountered in this thread: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/taxes/1099-nec-wizard-for-qb-desktop/00/722676/pag....
For you to print 1099 NEC, let's fix the error message you've received first. Before doing so, make sure to close QuickBooks. Then, from your QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub, run the Quick Fix my Program by following these steps:

Please keep me posted how things go on your end. I want to ensure this gets resolved for you.
Thank you for the post. I found and downloaded the Tool, ran the quick fix and still get the error message. I am not trying to update payroll, just trying to run1099 NEC’s through the file program or the vendor program...neither work. FYI when I updated from 2016 to the 2021 program, I did it with a disk. The installation all went smoothly.
Thanks for coming back for more support, @TreeDown. I'm here to share additional insights about how Form 1099-NEC works in QuickBooks.
We're unable to provide payroll and tax form updates on the products affected by the service discontinuation (version 2017 and below).
To resolve this issue, you may create a backup file on your QBD 2016 and install the trial license of QBD 2021. You should be able to upgrade the file in one jump.
If the converted file is running smoothly on the trial license of QBD 2021, you are ready to purchase the license.

I am not running 2016 QBDT, but TRYING to run 1099NEC on 2021
I am using quickbooks online and also have the same issue. 1099NEC is not even an option for me to select and the deadline is fast approaching!!!! HELP!
ALL of the guidance is useless when you cannot actually pick which accounts are for NEC and which ones are for MISC.

Hi, @needtoknow20.
Let me share additional information about 1099-NEC in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
No, you don't need to pay extra for payroll to get the update for 1099 NEC. The said form will show up on your account as long as your QBDT is in the latest release and accounts are map properly.
Once you've seen the updated form, you can now file 1099. But before doing that, let's make sure to create a backup. This way, we can ensure you have a copy of your old data.
Once done, please follow the steps below:
For the complete instructions, check out this article: Create and file 1099s with QuickBooks Desktop.
After filing the form, you can always review the status by going to the 1099 page. Then click the Check on Status. You may refer to this link: 1099/Tax/Submission Status.
Please note that the form 1099-NEC due date is February 1, 2021. Guarantee to submit the form before due dates to avoid getting penalties. For more details, you can check this article: Tax year due dates.

Just a suggestion... It would help us users if the Quick Books Team members actually READ the questions before just posting a reference to another post. In my frustrations over getting answers, the majority of time I have been (and observed others) referenced to other solutions that have nothing to do with what problem I (or others) have been having. They are solutions for procedures that are further down the line, (like steps 7,8, or 9),
when users are struggling with how to get “TO” step 1 because of program hang-ups, non-supported versions, team members saying you need different versions (payroll, premium, subscription, etc) when you do NOT need these things. It leads to more dissatisfaction with Quick Books. I was very lucky to finally get a QB representative that actually listened to me and quickly resolved the issue
