I saw this in an example for journal entries but have not been able to find way to turn this feature on in my QuickBooks..

Thank you for the reply!! I was trying to find the way where a running total of debits & credits was showing at the bottom of the journal entry.

You can utilize the one window view to see the totals when creating a journal entry. Simply go to the View menu at the top, and then select One Window.

That did not work. It does the same thing as maximizing the screen. I get a full screen of journal entry lines with not totals at the bottom. :(

Since you're still unable to see the totals of your journal entry, I'd recommend contacting our Customer Care Support. They have the tools to further look into the account and can also create a case to be submitted to our engineers for further investigation.

Upon checking, I haven't seen an open investigation about this. If you haven't contacted our Support team yet, let's repair your QuickBooks to fix any damaged components that caused the missing Totals. If that will not work, please contact them so they can investigate this further. They have more tools on their end.

Remember to back up all your company files before doing the repair.

I don't show totals or any of that bottom portion of the screen, even when I maximize. Is there a toggle in preferences? I've looked and I don't see anything.

By default, QuickBooks has a dedicated Totals section in every transaction screen. It's possible that some components of the program are damaged that's why you're not seeing this interface. Generally, if a user encountered unusual behaviors while working in QuickBooks, they can run the repair tool to resolve the major issues and runtime errors right away.
Before diving, please make sure to create a backup of your company file first. This way, you can restore your data if you ever run into problems. Then, restart your computer to close the programs that may affect the repair.

Totals on Journals are an Enterprise & Premier feature. Not for Pro. You can't turn on the totals in Pro.
No idea why the Intuit reps @KlentB @JessT @JoesemM @MaryLurleenM @JonpriL don't seem to know that. It has been this way since the totals were added.

If you are using QuickBooks Desktop Pro, the option to see the totals at the bottom is unavailable (as what BigRedConsulting mentioned). If not, let's try opening another company file (if you have one) to check if you're having a problem with only one file and not the program itself. Let me show you how:
Then, try creating a journal entry in QuickBooks again. If it works, there may be damaged data on the company file you've been working with. Just curious to see if you ever got this issue resolved. I have a client who currently has the same issue. They say they were able to make it appear last month but forgot what they did to get it to show. I have read where this is not available in Pro. I myself run Enterprise Accountant so I can not investigate this further. Did you ever find anything out?

I'd like to share some additional details about the totals option in a journal entry.
May I know what version of QuickBooks Desktop do you have? As per my colleague RCV and BigRedConsulting mentioned here, the Totals on Journals are only available in the Enterprise and Premier versions.
If you have these versions and the option is not showing up, let's repair your company file using the Verify and Rebuild Data tool. The Verify Data self-identifies the most commonly known data issues within a company file, the while Rebuild Data self-resolves most data integrity issues that the Verify Data finds.

Not having a totaling function for journal entries in the Pro version of Quickbooks is the equivalent of building a car model that doesn't have windshield wipers. It's unfathomable to me that an accounting software would be built without this. It is functionality that everyone making a journal entry would need.
Is the solution you are providing to Pro users to manually add all debits and credits off-system?

I understand that you want to add totals at the bottom of the journal entry on QuickBooks Desktop Pro. While this option isn't available on your version, you can manually add the totals outside of our system.

You can't turn on the balances when using Pro. Instead, they appear only when using Premier or Enterprise.
It is odd that Pro doesn't include this, but then that's a trend all over QB, where many features are included only in Premier and Enterprise.
If we wanted to add them outside then we might as well not be using QB. This is a ridiculous response. Of course this is what people are doing because QB is inept at fixing the actual problem.
Well, from their point of view, there isn't anything to fix. The totals were added to Premier and Enterprise years ago as a differentiator - as one of many features and tweaks you get if you use the higher-end versions of QuickBooks - or specific SKUs like Accountant, which also each have feature unique to their SKU.
This isn't a feature that should be considered as an upgrade or a selling point to purchase a higher end product. It is foundational and fundamental. Not having this extremely basic functionality in the journal entry screen is a product DEFECT which should be corrected. Credits and debits must equal on a journal entry (clearly). Forcing customers to hand key totals off-system is simply outrageous. I have used numerous accounting systems over the years, and every one has this "feature" (if you can even call it that).
To use another analogy, it would be like if McDonalds sold their basic cheeseburger with sand on the patty, and the only way to not eat a sandy burger is to pay more for the Big Mac.
