Hello there, AlaskaEpic. Thanks for getting back to us.
For the QuickBooks Desktop 2018 version not hosted, the update is expected on the 29th day of December. If you're using the hosted one, you'll have to wait for your host to install the latest update. Afterward, you'll be able to see 1099-NEC’s. Also, all version updates are scheduled to release this coming weekend for the Right Networks.
Still, I'd recommend checking the article shared by my colleague AlcaeusF above. This helps you check the latest update of your version from time to time.
Comment below if you have other questions. I'm right here together with my colleague to help you out. Take care and stay safe always.
Are you saying we have to the payroll module in order to generate the 1099-NEC?
I do not use your payroll feature. If the 1099 Wizard is not compatible with the new 1099 NEC forms this program is useless to me and I will be searching for a new/better optio
My wizard still has the 1099 MISC and no listing to check the 1099 NEC. Please explain how we do this???
This may be helpful to others regarding the 1099 wizard. I did receive the update and have the 1099-NEC, but not the wizard option. However, when you go to vendor, 1099 forms, print and e/file, then you have the wizard access. It doesn't say wizard, but it is the same info.
@SarahannC Do we need a payroll subscription to print 1099-NECs?
I have QBDT 2018. We do not use the Payroll module. We only have independent contractors, so would only be filing 1099-NEC and 1096. Are you sending out an update for QBDT so we can print 1099-NEC forms through Quickbooks?
Thanks for joining the thread, scn-ca. I'm here to help you with your 1099-NEC concerns.
The 1099-NEC update is included in the updated tax table.
You'll want to print the 1099-MISC and copy the data on that form to file 1099-NEC manually outside QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). Let's follow these steps:
I also got an additional 1099-related article you can refer: What is a 1099 and do I need to file one?
I'll be right here to assist if you need more help filing your 1099 tax forms.
Where do you see the 1099NEC? Also my wizard still only pulls up 2019. Do I have to wait until Jan 1, 2021 to see the 2020 1099's?
Kathy,
You should be able to change the date by either typing in the date in the date range boxes, or, change the drop down selection from "Last Calendar Year" to "This Calendar Year".

I tried that and it converted back to 2019. Not sure what Im doing wrong.
Thanks. I grew weary of checking my 2019 Qbooks everyday to see if the 1099 update was there. So was able to do that today and everything is ready in my 2019 Qbooks for 1099's. Thanks.
Hello, KathyP1964.
This likely caused by a sync issue with the computer's date and the wizard. In this case, I can help you fix this and ensure you're able to get the 1099 NEC.
You'll want to change the date of your computer to the next year. Then, run the 1099 wizard again. Finally, change it back to the current date afterwards.
To change the date:
Run the 1099 Wizard as you normally would then ensure to select this year's 1099 NEC form.
If you need to review the steps in running the wizard, you can check this article: Create and file 1099s with QuickBooks Desktop.
After filling the form, please check out our articles if you need to do other tasks in QuickBooks Desktop. I'm sure the guides will point you in the right direction.
Happy to provide help again if you have other questions. Add the details of your concern here or in a new thread and I'll be there for you.
Why do we have to backup a file to run the 1099 wizard? The wizard is not working it is looking back to 2019 for information.

There is NOT an NEC option in QBDT.

KathyO2020 - you will need to remap your accounts for both the NEC and the MISC as described in How to modify your chart of accounts for your 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC filing, then your reports will work correctly. Also, the report (in the 2020 version, at least), now have a drop-down box to toggle between the NEC and the MISC 1099.
I do not use QB payroll. I only have 1099-NEC vendors. How do I change the current 1099-misc vendors to 1099-NEC? I do not see that QB has issued an update yet to my QB Premier Nonprofit Edition. HELP!!
Thanks for joining us today, @Rosu75.
I have some information about how you can view and file your Form 1099-NEC. You'll need to update your QuickBooks release version to sync the changes of the form.
Here's how to do it:
Need more details? Check out this guide: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
After downloading, restart your computer. When prompter, accept the option to install the new release. Once done, you're now ready to begin filing your 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC forms.
Keep me posted if you still have questions or concerns about the program. I'll be around to help. Take care and have a great day ahead.
How do you get the 1099-NEC option to even show up? I'm in QuickBooks for Mac and have made sure I'm Up-To-Date but there is no 1099-NEC anywhere that I can find.
I have QuickBooks 2016 because that is what my clients use and I have to be able to work on their files from my computer. Will the 1099-NEC not be available for the 2016 version? If I have to get the 2020 version of QuickBooks can I keep the 2016 version on my Mac as well? I really do not want to have to purchase yet another version of QuickBooks just to do the 1099 NECs
Hi there, @SherriJabo.
I'm here to share some details on how the system handles 1099-NEC in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac (QBDT).
Yes, the 1099-NEC will not be available in QBDT 2016 version since this has been discontinued. Also, filing 1099 in QBDT for Mac is unavailable. As a workaround, you can export all the needed information, then go to tax1099.com. From there, complete the filing process.
Yes, you can keep the QBDT Mac 2016 version as long as you installed it separately. But before doing that, review first our minimum system requirements to install successfully. Also, ensure that your Mac is not macOS Catalina to avoid data loss and crashes.
Once confirmed, you can follow the steps below:
4. Double click the downloaded installer, then drag the QuickBooks icon to the Applications folder.
You may refer to this link: Install and set up QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
Since you don't want to purchase another version, you have two options:
Let me guide you how:
Please remember that Form 1099-NEC due date is February 1, 2021. Make sure to submit the form before due dates to avoid penalties. For more guidance, visit this article: Tax year due dates.
Here's how:
Moreover, there are changes to the 1099 forms and boxes in 2021 for the tax year 2020, so choose your forms carefully.
Additionally, I've attached some pages on how to edit form information, handling various forms, and other topics.
I'll be right here to help if you need further assistance, @SherriJabo. Keep safe!
