Hi doodholliday

You can call the IRS E-file services to reset your 10-digit pin. Within 7-10 banking days, your PIN will be mailed to you.

Here's how:

  1. Contact 866.255.0654.
  2. Choose option 1 and then 3 for E-file questions.
  3. When you get an IRS agent, ask for the e-file 10-digit PIN department.

You might want to file your form manually while waiting for your PIN to make sure you can submit it on time.

Sorry, to not have an answer but just another question. Which 10 digit PIN are we talking about that we need to set up QBD e-file? The EFIN/ERO? Is that the one? And what would I use for the state?

Hi, @LeahIlanah.

Thanks for the response. Allow me to chime in and help share some information about the 10-digit e-file PIN.

This PIN is obtained after enrolling to the E-file service in QuickBooks Desktop and this is different from the EFIN/ERO. If you do not receive this PIN or have lost it, you'll need to contact the IRS to request the status of your application.

You're going to need this PIN so you can e-file your 940, 941 or 944 tax forms. Let me provide you with the following articles below for more information:

E-file and E-pay: General Info

E-File 10-digit PIN lost or missing for Enhanced Payroll

E-file 940, 941, and/or 944 Federal Forms in QuickBooks Desktop

This will get you on the right track. Please let me know if you have other questions about E-File. I'm always here to help.

Thank you for sharing this. Unfortunately, I cannot access these articles because Intuit thinks I canceled an account, and won't let me go the page. It's a known issue, that they are apparently are not able to resolve.

Is there a different link, or option to get this information?

Thank you!

At least you know more than the techs that call me back that I pay for.  On line it states you have to mail them a letter so I am trying your way this time, you should educate those people from QB's because they don't know or have the information.  QB just removed my pin so I cannot file my 941 electronically even though I pay for it.

So frustration!!!! Laura

I have the same problem.  I upgraded to Quickbooks 22 and the pin is now gone.  I got my original pin 10 years ago and cannot locate it.

Thanks for reaching out and for joining in this conversation, @fusionpat. You have the option to reset your PIN so you can successfully transmit payroll.

Let me show you how:

  1. Log in to QuickBooks as admin.
  2. Go to the Employees menu, then Send Payroll Data.
  3. In the Send/Receive Payroll Data window, click Send.
  4. In the Payroll Service PIN window, select Forgot your PIN?
  5. Enter your admin password in the Password field, then click OK.
  6. Enter a new PIN when prompted.
  7. Select Submit.

Ensure that your PIN consists of 8-12 characters with a combination of letters and numbers, no special characters like $ % #, etc. Check out this link to learn some more: Change PIN for processing direct deposit payroll.

I can share some information on this, @LAMAR685.

At this time there's no option to see the PIN in QuickBooks Desktop for security reasons. I suggest contacting the EFTPS support team so they'll be able to resend your PIN by U.S. Mail. The IRS can schedule a payment for you in the meantime if you verify certain information. For safety reasons, your PIN must be mailed and can't be given to you over the phone.

For additional information, you can click this article: Enroll in Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS).

I don't have a 10 digit pin to efile Fed payroll forms

This is exactly what happened to me.  I updated my QB to the newest version (which I do at this time every year) and when I went to file my quarterly taxes the PIN was not there.  It has always been there by autofill.  Of course I can not find the file that had that info (from years ago).  So, I called the IRS, they had to speak to the owner of the company and a new PIN was supposed to be on it's way.  That was mid October, 2021.  I still have not received a new PIN, so now I can't file the 4th quarterly reports nor our W-2's.   I am back to calling the IRS and waiting for an agent which it says will be a 30 to 60 minute wait.  I sure hope I have called the right phone #, the correct department.   GEEZZ!

Hi there, Con4.

I’m here to help so you’re able to get this 5 digit PIN.

Are you referring to the 10 digit pin used for E-Filing?  If so, I suggest contacting IRS to get the PIN that you can use for filing SSA. To do so, you can check out the following website: https://www.eftps.gov/eftps/

The QB payroll service pin to submit payroll has nothing to do with IRS efile pin. Completely different.

Hi, drluna.

I appreciate you for sharing the details about the IRS E-file pin. I'll make sure that you can E-file federal tax forms in QuickBooks.

IRS regulates the use of PINs and has certain rules to follow before they provide you a PIN. You can use this link provided by IRS that contains the details to get a PIN: Use an On-Line Signature PIN to e-File Employment Tax Forms.

You can contact IRS' e-help Desk through this link: Contact IRS for More Information.

I don't have a 10 digit pin to efile Fed payroll forms

Quickbooks removed the pin from my software. There one day and gone the next no heads up or anything just GONE.  I have had that pin for 25 years and did not record it when I started out as I did not know what it was.  It took me 3 days to get a new one I have written it down now just in case Quickbooks decides to remove it again.  This pin was very important to me to be allowed to e-file my quarterlies.

A lot of the time Quickbooks thinks they are making improvements but are really causing headaches for their clients.  Very frustrating especially when we are sold a $3,000 program and lied to us from their sales person

that it will import the time from another program.  Buyers beware!!!

I don't have a 10 digit pin to efile Fed payroll forms

My PIN was lost in my yearly QB update. I have no clue what the PIN is and it was never written down.  Here is what I have gone through. Several calls to QB to be told to call EFTPS as they are who gives that PIN for QB. After calling them they inform me that they do NOT give that PIN.  I called the IRS and thanks to Google and a few long wait times on calls I finally found the right phone # to call.  Who ever I spoke to did NOT understand what the issue was and sent me back to QB for the PIN and told me that QB would ask for a new PIN for us.   FINALLY, I reach someone at IRS that seemed to know.  I was told that our PIN had been flagged and deactivated (which I know is not really what happened – it disappeared in the QB update so I did not have a PIN which to enter) because my name (I have been filing the 941’s and W-2’s for the past 14 years through QB) did not match the name they had listed for us for the PIN.  The lady at the IRS said our PIN had been deactivated.  So, the owner asked for a new PIN.  It took several weeks to receive it.  We made sure to put the PIN under the owners name this time so when I retire this will not become an issue again.    Once we received the new PIN, we had to mail back a signed “yes we received the new PIN” letter the IRS provided.  This had to be done within a few days of when they mailed the new PIN, so we put it in the mail that same day.  Four weeks since we mailed the letter back it was time to file 1st quarter 941’s.  After filing with the new PIN I received the wonderful “failed, rejected by the IRS” email.  SO, has the IRS just not had enough time to process our returned acknowledgement letter and activate our new PIN?  Crazy frustrating!!

I don't have a 10 digit pin to efile Fed payroll forms

Hello there, @OzzieG.

I know this hasn't been easy for you. I'm here to ensure you get pointed in the right direction.

For security concerns, we cannot view the PIN in QuickBooks Desktop. I advise contacting the EFTPS support staff so they can resend your PIN by U.S. Mail. They will mail you the PIN since they can't provide it over the phone.

To do so, you can check out the following website: https://www.eftps.gov/eftps/.

You can check how to update your EFTPS Internet password to see the specific steps for changing your password in QuickBooks Desktop to correspond with your new EFTPS Internet password.

You can review how to e-file or e-pay status QuickBooks Desktop. Visit each of them to learn more.

Please know that you're always welcome to post a reply in this thread if you have any other questions with your e-file payroll forms pin. I'll be here ready to assist you. Keep safe, and wishing you continued success!

I don't have a 10 digit pin to efile Fed payroll forms

Good morning. I discovered the 10 digit pin is not issued by the IRS. The 10 digit pin is issued by Intuit. I had it written down in my records when my payroll service was initially set up.

***** Intuit should write the solution on this forum ****

This is a huge inconvenience for all of your customers that upgraded and are running into this issue.

FYI Intuit is the one that took the pin away FYI it only took me 3 days to contact the IRS and 8 hours to wait on line so no help from Intuit that is for sure.  Why they deleted it after 20 years is beyond me.
