941 2rd QTY - Latest version update causes field 5a (Taxable social security wages) to be blank

Hello,

I wanted to reply to your question.  After downloading the latest Quickbooks Pro desktop version (R12_68) and rebooting your desktop/laptop the latest IRS forms will be available.  Quickbooks published a new version on 06/27/2020.

However, this version will NOT address to 100% the issue with populating the social security wage value automatically into field 5a.

Instead, I entered the value manually into field 5a and the entire calculation on FORM 941is correct now I could also print the Form 941 2nd without the annoying watermark "Do not File".

I gave up on the tech support from Quickbooks Pro since their answers are so ridiculous. The tech team is apparently getting paid by reading/ analysing and responding to questions in less then 10 seconds without even understanding the entire business and technical background.

I hope I could help you to generate Form 941 2nd.

Thanks

Matt

I am not getting the "Do Not File", instead field 5a is blank and then report shows there is an over payment.

Good luck getting them to admit the problem is theirs.. often comes late after hundreds to thousands of complaints then they say well we did fix a small problem... meanwhile thousands of people have wasted thousands of hours on the phone to no avail. line 5a is not calculating correctly and it it their problem as I have 3 machines and when run on my older one without updating .... it calculates fine. it is the new covid additions or something else that messed it up .. here's to hoping they fix it soon.... hang tight.

I'm trying to file the 941 for 2nd quarter, I have updated my payroll.

When adding line 3,5a,5c they WILL NOT total  5e correctly.  I have over 20 clients I will be doing ALL 941's by hand because it will NOT let you override and put the correct amount.  Please send out an update!!!!! TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.... Also on some accounts its leaving 5a blank (Taxable Social Security Wages) and showing a refund due, this is incorrect too.

I understand this wasn't an easy process for you, @black70.

I have two other solutions you can consider performing. First, let's ensure to turn off the anti-virus software. This may prevent some of the fields from populating on the 941 forms. Please refer to this article for the steps: Turn off anti-virus for QuickBooks Desktop.

Then, let's update your QuickBooks software to the latest release to have the up-to-date features and fixes. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu at the top.
  2. Choose Update QuickBooks Desktop, and then Update Now.
  3. Put a checkmark in the Reset Update box, and then select Get Updates.
  4. Tap OK to continue.
  5. From the QuickBooks Desktop Update Service window, pick Install Now.

Once done, let's close QuickBooks Desktop, and then reboot your computer to refresh it and ensure to apply the updates.

Then, open your QuickBooks, and let's press F2 in your keyboard to check its version. It needs to be on R12_68 to get the right form and enable line 5a and e to calculate correctly.

Here's a great resource you can use to make sure you're compliant with state payroll tax regulations: Payroll Tax Compliance.

I'm having the same issue today. The program will not allow me to override the 5a field, either.  Nothing has changed in the setup so it has to be the update.

I have the exact same problem except for the message. It is not populating the 5a field and it is July 6 so it should be working fine.

I am having the same issue and have done all the updates.  The social security wages are not populating on the 941 report for Q2.  Any fixes in the works?

Thanks for joining in on the thread, West Coast.

In most cases, the issue was resolved by updating these two components:

After that, they close and reopen QuickBooks. This would help refresh the program and apply the updates. When they rerun the Form 941, it already works.

If the same thing happens, we suggest reporting it to our Customer Care Team. They can pull up your account and review what is happening on your end.

Let us know if you need anything else.

I have the same issue.  It's a little frustrating to see how many other people are reporting this and the feedback we're getting.  I've wasted a couple of hours trying to resolve this and even emailed my CPA.  You guys need to do better than this.  If you find a bug, let people KNOW.

I am having the same issue.  I've done everything you recommended to the last person, and still nothing is filled out in the SS fields.  Has Intuit/QB been able to ascertain what the issue is?

Hi,

I am a core software developer working for a Hi-Tech company in Silicon Valley for 30+ years.  It is a bug and response from level I support is pathetic.  They don't understand beyond how to update software and tables.  They are doing what they are supposed to do.

The workaround is to manually populate the 5a field.

The QB should have added a Q/A line to ask if company wants to defer the payment.  The requirements were not rightly communicated to the programmers from domain experts.  It is a classical software engineering issue.

5a still blank.  Has anyone had this resolved yet?  I am all up to date on the updates.  I answered all questions saying I did not pay and qualified sick or family wages.  Come on QB lets get this resolved~

I had a similar issue with the 941 form. However, it didn't stop me from filing it just said I made an overpayment and to select to apply to future taxes or request a refund. I had to load the amount manually into the form and then all my calculations were correct. Hope this is fixed by next quarter.

Did you find a solution to make it populate 5a without having to override the field? I've been on the phone with QB for way too long with no solution.

Hello there, ellye211,

You'll want to check user rwslaura answer, please refer to this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/employees-and-payroll/re-how-can-i-create-a-correc....

Here are articles you can use to check if your QuickBooks Desktop has the latest version already:

Once done, let's pull up your 941 forms to see if it's now populating the missing information.

Let me know how it goes, I'd love to help more if there's a need to.

Good day to you as well, tdelapaz.

We'd really want to make sure that you're able to sort this out so you can file your quarterly tax form. Did you update your QuickBooks through the Help menu option? If so, we have one more way of resetting the newest QuickBooks update to resolve the issue. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Downloads & Updates page.
  2. Select United States in the drop-down for country, then select the version of QuickBooks that you're using.
  3. Click Search, then click the get the Get the latest updates link.
  4. When the download finishes, open the file to install the update.

Make sure to restart your computer after installing the update. Once done, open the company file once again and review the Form 941.

If you're still getting a zero for Social Security wages, please contact our Payroll Support Team so they can take a closer at this and make sure this is sorted out.

Here's how to reach out to them:

  1. Go the Help menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. Let them know that you need help with your quarterly tax form, then click Let's talk.
  4. Choose between the available options that you can see there.
