Greetings, @natalie3!
You can print your Form 1096 after going through the manual process of printing and filing of 1099. Let me show you how to prepare and print it.
Please know that if the form needs to be aligned, select No, it doesn't line up and then select Next. Then re-select the 1096 Form, and select Print on a 1096 Form.
When you electronically file your 1099 forms, you'll receive the link to download a copy of the employer 1099. Or go to the IRS website and download the form.
You can always get back to us here in the Community if you have any other questions.
this did not work. it doesnt print to PDF or to my printer. I need a copy of the 1096 how do I get this?
Hey, @cschmid.
Thanks for following up on this thread. If you're having trouble printing a copy of a 1096, then I recommend clearing your browsing data. Removing this data will help resolve any errors or glitches that may be standing in your way. Here's how:
Note: Below is instructions on how to clear browsing data within Chrome. If you're using a different browser, then use the link provided above for additional steps.
Afterward, try the same steps my colleague gave you above. If the printing issue is persisting, then I suggest contacting our Customer Support Team. They can look further into your account by using different tools and a screen share.
Here's an extra link that can help you out with PDF printing issues.
Let me know if this helps. I want to make sure that you're able to get back to running your business. I'll be waiting for your response.
Thanks Candice - i was told by customer support this morning that I have to reach out to the IRS because Quickbooks does not keep 1096's on file anyway. Just curious if you disagree with this or if this is instructions on how to print out a blank 1096?
She told me: "
Quickbooks cannot archive the 1096 the form
once you e-file the 1099 the 1096 will go along with the 1099s that you have submitted. For the 1096 form they cannot archive it and we cannot see it on my end. If I want a copy I need to ask from the IRS."
Good afternoon, @cschmid.
Thank you for following up on this thread with contacting support about locating the 1096 forms.
Yes, the QuickBooks specialist is correct, you'll have to get in contact with the IRS to get further instructions with printing the 1096 forms.
According to the IRS webpage, the form is provided for informational purposes only. The official printed version of this IRS form is scannable, but a copy, printed from this website is not.
For more information about 1096 forms, you can refer back to this article: About General Instructions for Certain Information Returns.
If you have any more questions or concerns, please feel free to comment below. Have a good rest of your day!
ok thanks - so FOR ANY FRUSTRATED CUSTOMERS READING THIS: Quickbooks can not provide you with the 1096 they turned in on your behalf. You have to contact the IRS directly.
(this should be clear somewhere before submitting 1099s with you for the record - this has been an extremely frustrating week following lots of directions online that lead to no where)
I could not find these commands on Quickbooks Desktop. Last year the drop down menu said Print 1096. This year there is not that selection.
Hi there, @fortsutter11.
I've got you covered. I have the steps to help you resolve the missing "Let's get started" button so you can manually file your 1099.
A cache-related issue is likely preventing the "Let's get started" button from appearing when preparing 1099. In this case, use an incognito or private window to rule this out:
From there, log in to QuickBooks Online and prepare the 1099 form again. When you're able to do so, go back to the regular browser and clear the cache. This deletes the data that causes the issue.
Afterward, close out the browser processes to complete the clearing process. You can also use another supported browser as an alternative.
Regarding the 1099 self-filing option, make sure to follow these steps:

I'm on Desktop and have contractors I send out 1099's - they are vendors, not employees. This year they're getting the 1099-NEC. I figured out how to print those (finally) but am not finding anything about printing the 1096 (rather than e-file)
Everything I'm finding seems to relate to QB online and I don't have that! Very frustrating. This should be simple.
Hi there, Susan Mooses.
Thank you for dropping by the Community, I'm happy to help. So the ability to print your 1096 can be found in the same place where you print your 1099's. You can follow these steps:
While those steps are for 1099's, they lead you to the place in which you can print 1096 forms as well. You can find these steps and more information in the following helpful article. If there's anything else I can do to help in the meantime, feel free to post here anytime. Thank you and I hope you have a lovely day.
Thanks Nick- I was having the same problem using the desktop version. There are many of you that had the same question above as I did. It's much more difficult/non-intuitive to find where to print 1096 than in previous years.
Your instructions did the trick and found it in the print form dialog box. I agree this should be much simpler to find. Thanks!
This is all I get. 1099-NEC is done. There is no 1096 button anywhere that I can see. What am I missing?
Thanks for the clarification, @fortsutter11.
I have some steps we can perform to isolate this issue. I recommend running the Verify Rebuild utility tool. This scans your company file for issues and fixes them right away. Let me show you how:

You can also check article for more detailed steps: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.
Once everything looks good, you can print your 1096 in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). To be guided, you can follow the steps shared by my colleague Nick_M above.
I’ve also added this article that you can read in case you want to learn how to check your filing status in QuickBooks: Check e-file or e-pay status.
If you have any other concerns or follow-up questions, you’re always welcome to tag me in your reply. I’m just a few clicks away from you. Have a great day and keep safe.
How do I get a copy of the actual completed 1096 Quick Books filed for me with the IRS along with my 1099-NEC's, to send the state copies to the respective states?
It depends which state you're in and the version of QuickBooks that you're using, K12 Sphere.
If you e-file using Tax1099 in QuickBooks Desktop to e-file, open this State Filing Tax1099 article to see what states are supported for 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC e-filing.
If you have QuickBooks Online, filing with your state is not supported at the moment. You can go to this article to learn if they require the 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC and how to file: Payroll Tax Compliance Links.
You can get the exact same copy of the 1099s by following the steps in these article:
I'd be glad to get back to this thread if you have follow-up questions.
when you go to print the 1099 forms, there will be a first choice button that says preview 1099, under that is Print 1099, under that is PRINT 1096!!!! It took me 2 days and several frustrating requests before finally fining the answer. Come on QuickBooks, you're up my keister on EVERYTHING else I don't want or need but this I had to DIG AND DIG AND DIG.. QB helps with the most inane crap and can't seem to get the simple everyday needs met.
this is the only answer that actually works and accomplished

Thank you for dropping by the Community, I'm happy to help. So the ability to print your 1096 can be found in the same place where you print your 1099's. You can follow these steps:
- Create your 1099s in QuickBooks.
- In the Choose a filing method window, select the Print 1099-NEC or Print 1099-MISC button.
- Specify the date range for the forms then choose OK.
- Select all vendors you wish to print 1099s for.
- Select the Print 1099 button. Select Print 1096s instead, if printing form 1096.
- Confirm your printer settings then select Print.

what we are all trying to do, PRINT 1096

Thank you Miss Penny!! It also took me 2 days and several frustrating requests before finally fining the answer. Good lord, why was this so hard. Come on Quickbooks, I'm questioning if you have real life people testing your software and giving you feedback. Also, why isn't QB more user friendly with note fields, and acting more like a CRM?! With all your billions of dollars, can't you find some quarantined out of work at home tech to accomplish this?!
help - i don't have the "expenses" listed on the left had side.
Let's check why you're unable to see Expenses on your QuickBooks Online account, michwhit15.
Access permission is one of the reasons why this function went missing on the file. Make sure to log into QuickBooks as the master admin so you can print your 1099.
Each user you add to QuickBooks has a certain permission level. It determines what they can or can't do. Learn more about user types and managing their permissions.
If you're a contractor and was invited by an employer to view 1099, you can sign in to the limited QuickBooks Self-Employed to view or print your 1099-MISC. Then, click the Clients menu and select the Forms tab. From there, you'll be able to print a copy of your returns.
Check out this link to learn more about this: Fill out a W-9 and view your 1099-MISC in QuickBooks Self-Employed.
If you're the employer of the QuickBooks Online account, you can use other supported browsers. Then, create and file 1099s from there.
When that works, clear cache and cookies on your regular browser. If not, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Online Team. They can create a case to isolate the missing Expenses menu.
Here's how to get in touch with them:
Keep me posted if you have follow-up questions by commenting below. I'll be around until you're able to find the Expenses menu on your QuickBooks account.
no Kidding....I keep getting the medals for asking great questions. I don't care about the medals, I just want the question answered.
