Format and Import Mailing Addresses
by Intuit•2• Updated 1 month ago
When you import contacts into Mailchimp, you can include their mailing addresses to use with segmentation and other features. How you’ll set up your import depends on whether your import file contains address data in a single column or across multiple columns.
In this article, you’ll learn how to import mailing addresses to Mailchimp.
Before you start
- Make sure you’re familiar with the overall import process.
- Subscribed contacts who are imported to an audience don't go through the signup process, so you'll need to verify that you have permission to email them.
- Each audience includes an Address field by default, but it's hidden from signup forms unless you choose to make it visible.
Review your import file
Your Mailchimp audience includes an Address field that’s designed to store each contact’s complete mailing address. We automatically format addresses that you collect with your signup form or connected store, but imported contacts and their data will need some extra attention.
Here are some things to consider when you review your import file.
- Columns Are mailing addresses stored in a single column or multiple columns? The import process differs for each.
- Address length Each line of an address must be fewer than 45 characters.
- Country codes Use the two-letter country code instead of the country name. Our system will attempt to recognize countries by name, but it increases the likelihood of error. For example, "United States" won't work with some features, but "US" will.
- United Kingdom addresses A United Kingdom address with UK as the country will not import correctly. You’ll need to use GB instead.
Format and import a single address column
To format and import a single mailing address column, follow these steps.
- Review your import file to confirm that each contact’s complete address is stored in a single column. This must include the street, city, state or province, zip or ZIP code, and country.
- Make sure each part of the address is separated by two spaces and remove any commas.
- Log in to Mailchimp and begin your import.
- On the Match step of the import process, match the single address column to the Address - Combined field and click Confirm.
- Continue to match the other columns in your file as needed and complete your import.
After you import, you’ll see address information in the contact table as well as the individual contact profile.
Format and import multiple address columns
If your import file has separate columns for address details like street address, city, state, country, and zip code, we’ll help you combine them when you import.
In the import process, you usually match each column in your file to a corresponding audience field in Mailchimp. When you have multiple address-related columns, however, you’ll match each one to a different part of the same address field. These options are labeled with Address plus the specific component, like this.
- Address - Street Address
- Address - Address Line 2
- Address - City
- Address - State/Prov/Region
- Address - Country
- Address - Zip/Postal
To format and import multiple address columns, follow these steps.
- Review your spreadsheet to make sure street information, city, state or province, ZIP or postal, and country information is stored in different columns.
- Log in to Mailchimp and begin your import.
- On the Match step of the import process, match the first address column to the corresponding part of the address field. For example, let’s say the first address column in your file is labeled Street Address. To match it to the correct part of the address field, you’ll choose Address - Street Address from the Column name drop-down and click Confirm.
- Repeat step 3 for each address column.
- Continue to match other columns in your file as needed and complete your import.
After you match and import all of the address columns in your file, your contacts’ full addresses will be stored in the Address field of your Mailchimp audience. You can see this information in the contact table as well as the individual contact profile.
