Changing Default Browser in QB Desktop

Please change the default browser to Microsoft Edge.  Or allow user to choose default browser in Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2020.

No bank supports IE anymore and I can not use bank feeds to update my transactions any more.

I have both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge installed on my computer.  I have changed the default browser from Google Chrome to Microsoft Edge.  However, I don't see anyway to change the default browser in Quickbooks desktop Pro 2020.   When a browser is launched from withing Quickbooks app, it is still opening IE.

On Edge about importing QBO files.

totally agree. I been frustrated for months now. I see it wasn't me and i am not the only one. i been back and forth with Chase and QB and they can't help. I wish QB would just allow us to change the browser and i guess that is the solution. I am beyond frustrated and lost so many hours of my time. I am very annoyed.

This is not what I want you to experience with QuickBooks, @nowellsinc.

I can imagine how inconvenient this is for you and to your business.

Rest assured our engineering team is aware of this feature request and is working on implementing this in future updates. In the meantime, you’ll want to manually upload your bank transactions to your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) software. I'd be glad to show you how:

  1. Open a web browser and sign in to your bank account using your normal process.
  2. Download your transactions as a QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo) file.
  3. Once downloaded, go to the Banking menu in your QBDT software.
  4. Select Bank Feeds and click Import Web Connect Files.
  5. Click the QBO file you saved, then select Open.
  6. Select Create a new QuickBooks account.
  7. Click Continue and then OK.
  8. Then go to the Bank Feeds Center to review your transactions.

You can also read through this article for more details about the process (scroll down to the Import Web Connect (.qbo) files section): Set up bank accounts for Bank Feeds in QuickBooks Desktop.

Once uploaded, you’ll want to review and match those transactions to the existing ones in your software. This way, we can ensure there are no duplicates.

While I can’t promise you a specific date as to when this feature will be available, I suggest checking our QuickBooks Product Updates page. Here, you’ll get to know the latest news and features in QuickBooks.

In case you have other concerns with QBDT, let me know in your reply. I’ll be around to help. Take care and keep safe.

Is there any update on this? I currently use quickbooks online and used a online app to covert my quickbooks online data to quickbooks desktop but i can't link any of the 15 accounts to the QBD because they have all moved away from internet explorer. I also just bought a new laptop and QBD 2021 just for the transition from Online to Desktop which i am only doing because we are changing out corp structure and adding a parent and subsidiaries and i dont want to pay for 5 different quickbooks online accounts. I need to be able to link Chase, American Express, Citi just to name the important ones.

Please tell us all this update is coming soon?

Is there any update on this? I just purchased QBD 2021 Pro Plus so that i can handle multiple companies without having to have 5 subscriptions but being unable to auto import transactions makes it unusable. 1 of the companies has 15 accounts and manually uploading transactions is not what i paid for quickbooks to do. Please tell us this fix is coming as almost all financial institutions have stopped supporting IE11 for security reasons.

Thanks for joining the Community, f150Husky.

Currently, QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) works best with Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) web browser. If you're curious about an update in regard to the suggestion Ashley H submitted on April 6, 2020, there aren't any updates for product suggestions. Once they're submitted, they get reviewed by our developers for consideration in upcoming releases.

You can also submit your own feature requests while signed in.

Here's how:

  1. In your top menu bar, go to Help, Send Feedback Online, then Product Suggestion....
  2. Choose a Type of Feedback and Product Area (optional) from the available drop-down menus.
  3. Enter any suggestions/feedback in your Here is my suggestion: field.
  4. If you'd like, include your name/email in the My name is: (optional) and My e-mail address is: (optional) fields.
  5. Select Send Feedback.

Your feedback's definitely valuable to Intuit. Submissions are reviewed by our Product Development Team and considered in future updates.

As for exporting/importing data, there's a few options available. If you're using an Advanced plan for your QuickBooks Online (QBO) companies, you can create a manual backup:

  1. While signed in as an admin, use your Gear (⚙️) icon and choose Back up company, Backup, then New Manual Backup.
  2. Pick a company.
  3. Make an appropriate selection using the Backup Type ▼ drop-down menu.
  4. Click Request backup.

Other options for exporting data include moving lists/balances or reviewing our QuickBooks App Store for apps that may help achieve what you're looking to accomplish. If necessary, data can be imported.

For banking information, you can download transactions from your financial institution as a QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo) file and import it into QBDT.

You'll be able to find the latest news about Intuit's products in our QuickBooks Blog.

If there's any other questions, I'll be here to help. Have a lovely day!

I have had to import a .qbo file since forever to import transactions.  The problem now is that I cannot pay bills in IE.  What is the suggested fix for that?

I have had to use the import .QBO process since I can remember.  There is a new issue now.  I cannot pay bills through IE.  My bank is not using IE.  What is the suggested fix?  For now, I have to go outside of Quickbooks, log in to my bank, and pay bills.  This is quite cumbersome.  I would hope Quickbooks has a plan in place to make their users satisfied .

This is not what I want you to experience, @cosmitty.

I’m here to help and share with you some steps to isolate this issue. To get started, let’s create a sample company file and pay your bills from there. This way, we can check if this issue is caused by data problems in your company file.

Here’s how in your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) software:

  1. Go to the File menu.
  2. Click New company
  3. Select Express Start
  4. Follow the onscreen steps to finish the setup.

You can also check this link for more details: Create a QuickBooks Desktop Company File.

If you're able to pay your bills seamlessly, open your original company file and run the Verify Rebuild Data tools. This tool easily detects issues within your company and fixes them right away.

However, if the issue persists while using a sample company file, I suggest running a clean install. This resolves any company file issues and a few other situations.

In case you need to learn some best practices in managing your bills in QuickBooks, visit this link for reference: Accounts Payable workflows in QuickBooks Desktop. This resource provides detailed guidelines on how Accounts Payable works.

Let me know if you need further assistance in paying your bills, it’s always my pleasure to help and keep you in working order. Have a good one!

Thank you for your quick reply.  I don't believe setting up a sample company file will help.  This is the message I am getting from my bank when I log in outside of Quickbooks (which is what I am doing in order to get bills paid).

Thank you for the screenshot you've provided, cosmitty.

Base on the screenshot you've shared here, I can see it's about browser system requirements. In QuickBooks Desktop, it requires an Internet Explorer 11 (32-bit) as your browser. It could be the Internet Explorer (IE) version you have might not suitable with the QBDT installed in your system. Hence, you encountered this error message.

I suggest upgrading to the latest support IE version. For your reference, read this article: Upgrade Internet Explorer to open QuickBooks Desktop.

If the same thing happens after updating the latest version of a browser, I suggest reaching out to our QuickBooks Support team. This way, they can pull up your account and investigate for further resolution.

  1. Go to Help.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Enter your concern.
  4. Click Contact Us

To ensure you get prioritize on your concern. Here's an article you can read to learn more about our support hours and types: Support hours and types

Changing Default Browser in QB Desktop

@AileneA  - sorry, but you are missing the point.  All of you Intuit employees are missing the point.

QB Desktop ONLY works with Internet Explorer (not that it works "best" with IE as you frequently state, but it ONLY uses IE).

MANY banks (more and more each month) DO NOT ALLOW THE USE OF INTERNET EXPLORER for their websites.  The version of IE is NOT the issue, the issue is that QB uses IE at all!

This has been a problem for more than four years.  If the engineers are actually working on a fix, that would be good news, but I've been hearing that for a very long time.

Yes for importing bank transactions, we can use the work-around of logging into the bank website, downloading the file, and then manually importing it into QB.  But at some banks, this is only available as a PAID service, or as part of a suite of services - not all of my clients pay for this service, so that isn't an option for them.

What @cosmitty  is asking is whether there is a similar workaround for bill pay which would allow you to export the bill pay file from QB to a file you could then manually upload to your bank.  I don't know of one, although you certainly would be able to process all of your bill payments on the bank website, then (if you have the download option available), download the web connect file and add them in QB from the bank feed.  But that rather defeats the purpose of the desktop software.  Basically, @cosmitty , your bill pay process just became double the amount of work it was before.  You might try ignoring the bank site warning and see if it will allow you to proceed without an approved browser, but I'm willing to bet it won't.

This is amazing to see a total lack of concern by Intuit on this issue. I understand how challenging it can be to make changes to the core product. However, creating these security issues and NOT removing barriers for customers to use a product that has been paid for is simply unbelievable. Adding to this users frustration is all of the features to update and spend even more money with Intuit. You can't navigate anywhere in the software without bumping into a monetized request.

I have no idea with Intuit is thinking, but it appears that the QBDT software is heading the same direction as MS Internet Explorer.

This is the utmost in laziness on the part of Intuit.  The price of the software goes up quite a bit every year, but they can't update a decade-old browser that NOBODY supports anymore as it is completely unsafe.  I am actively changing accounting software for both of my business because of this reason, and a few others much like it.

BTW, your little workaround doesn't work.  The whole point is that we can't connect with the institution to download the QBO file through Qb.

Thanks for speaking up for all the frustrated accountants and bookkeepers.  It doesn’t make sense to have a financial software that doesn’t speak the same language and integrate with the major  financial asset custodians in the marketplace.

Has this issue been resolved yet? Can we change the default browser in QB 2020?

Changing Default Browser in QB Desktop

Hi there, @ SpaceWoman.

As of now, changing the default browser isn't possible. QuickBooks recommends using Internet Explorer (IE) when downloading bank transactions.

If your bank doesn't support IE, you have the option to bring the transactions manually.

Here's how:

  1. From the QuickBooks File menu, select Utilities.
  2. Choose Import and then Web Connect Files.
  3. Select the QBO file you saved, then select Open.
  4. When prompted to Select Bank Account, select:
    • Use an existing QuickBooks account if the account you are importing the transactions into is already set up in QuickBooks.
    • Create a new QuickBooks account if the account you are importing the transactions into is not yet in QuickBooks. Type a name.
  1. Select Continue. You should see a dialogue box telling you that the data has been successfully read into QuickBooks. Click on OK.
  2. Go to the Bank Feeds Center to review your transactions.

For your reference about the process, I suggest checking this article: Import Web Connect (.qbo) Files.

Once you downloaded your bank transactions, review and categorize them to ensure your books are accurate.

If I can be of any additional assistance, please don't hesitate to share your concerns or questions.

BankFeeds does not work either. - The problem is that it is ***still using*** IE11 and this discontinued browser does not support the new protocols for security.

I just downloaded and installed 2021. I am disappointed to say the very least. If this doesn't get rectified within this build I plan to go pay $600 to PeachTree and get their latest software.

I cannot believe this has been a topic with Intuit dating back to posts in 2017. Shame on you.

The responses here by the QB Team calls into question the entire cryptosecurity of the Desktop program. If Intuit doesn't seem to be aware of the financial industry abandoning IE11 for Edge and other browsers, how could they be aware of other know threats? I have to reconsider whether I continue to use QB. I've already had questions due to problems with other features.

Intuit's responses are inadequate and/or incorrect here. If Intuit doesn't seem to be aware of the financial industry replacing IE11 with Edge et al, how could they be aware of other know cyber threats?

@KlentB I see your response the inquiry regarding Quickbooks allowing different browsers for bank feeds.  What's the status of this change?  It's been 6 months and we're still having these same issues!  Please don't suggest going to the Quickbooks Blog, we've already noticed that it doesn't contain the type of updates that you've suggested.

Hello, @Rkacpa1.

I'm here to provide some information on supported browsers that we use in QuickBooks.

I can totally see the importance of QuickBooks being able to support all the available browsers. I'll also take note of this. However, QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) only supports Internet Explorer 11 (32-bit) at this time.

You can check these articles for more information:

I also invite you to visit the Firm of the Future site. It contains resources and tips to help easily use QuickBooks.

Let me know if there's anything that I can further assist with your bank feeds. I'm always here to help. Have a great rest of the day!

QB is becoming antiquated. Microsoft has not only ended support for IE 11, but also for its immediate successor Edge Legacy. QB is now two versions behind on supporting the relevant browser technology. Intuit should immediately incorporate support for Chromium-based browsers as they are now the industry standard.

It is really frustrating that QuickBooks is avoiding the answer that it is not going to happen. The original post was about 2020 Desktop Pro. I also think many of the customers that are adding comments are not using 2021. Deflecting the question is not answering. Any upgrade that I do will be with an entirely different system.
