Efile IRS 10 digit pin

I am set up to efile but my 10 digit - said it had expired.  what do i do about that?  is it an IRS thing ro QB thing..  i can epay for not efile.  i called IRS - they said it was something to reset in  QB -- QB says i need to get it set via IRS.  maybe i don't know the correct wording but it's becoming very frustrating.  I tried to re-enroll but it was rejected because i'm already enrolled.  i just need a new pin - i know where to put it when i get a new one -- should be easier if it expires every so often.

thank you!

Hello, @Tia Grant.

I see you've been through a lot in trying to acquire the 10 digit pin for your E-file. I'm here to guide you, so this matter gets resolved.

The E-file 10 digit PIN has no expiry date. You can only ask for a new one through the IRS website if it's missing or lost. You must have clicked the remember this pin on the system thus creating an unusual behavior when entering your pin. To ensure that the pin goes through smoothly, please re-enter it again and be sure you've unchecked any boxes that require to remember the pin.

Also, make sure you have the most recent payroll update to avoid any disruptions while processing your E-file/E-pay in QuickBooks.

Keep me posted on how it goes. I want to ensure you can submit your form successfully. Have a good one.

I share that users frustration, and the person who responded did not answer it at all!  I have the same problem, cant re-apply, I don't know where to find my PIN from last year, QB sends me to IRS and EFTPS, I have called, been on hold for hours, and everyone sends me back to Quick Books, even the IRS says you can't request anything except through the software you are using and their form, cant request from IRS directly!   This is such a terrible system!  According to the IRS, QB must supply us the form to either enroll for a PIN, or to try and retrieve a PIN!  So, can someone tell me where I QuickBooks I can find this form, I just keep going round and round!

Thanks for joining this conversation, @RICH_1.

As mentioned by my colleague Lily, the E-file 10 digit PIN has no expiry date. The IRS will only provide you a new pin once it was missing or lost.

If you already followed the instruction shared by my colleague above and the issue persists, I highly suggest contacting our Phone Support team. They have tools that can pull up your account in a secure environment and check the cause of this odd behavior. They can also perform other troubleshooting steps to fix this for you.

Here's how to reach them:

  1. In QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), go to the Help menu at the top to get to the QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select Contact Us at the bottom to connect with our live support.

Just in case, I'll also add this article that tackles E-filing issues in QBDT: Troubleshoot efile or epay rejection issues.

Please let me know how the call goes or if you have any other issues or concerns. I want to make sure everything is taken care of for you. I'll be more than willing to help. Have a great day!

Welcome to the Community, PattyB3.

After enrolling in our E-file service, the appropriate tax agency will review your submission. If approved, you'll receive a letter with the 10-digit personal identification number (PIN) and a Statement of Receipt. Be sure to sign the document and mail it back to activate your PIN.

In the event your application is rejected, you can re-submit it. Additionally, if you never received your PIN or have lost it after receiving it, you'll need to contact the IRS E-file services for assistance.

I've included a useful resource about checking e-file/e-pay statuses that may come in handy moving forward: Check e-file or e-pay status

I'll be here to help if there's any additional questions. Have a lovely day!

  3. Verify that E-payment is selected, and choose E-pay.

Thanks, but this is not about my 4-digit EFTPS pin, but rather my IRS e-file pin, which is 10 digits. Maybe I enter that just before filing my quarterlies? I am not ready to do so, so I don't want to trigger any filing yet!

I'm here to show you how to enter the PIN in QuickBooks, Kingfish1979.

You can enter the 10-Digit PIN in the Enter agency login information screen when your filing forms electronically.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Employees and click Payroll Center.
  2. Select the File Forms tab.
  3. Click the form that you need to file and click File Form.
  4. Choose the form filing period, then click OK.
  5. Hit the Check for Errors button and fix them.
  6. Select the Submit Form button.
  7. Click the E-file button.
  8. Enter the 10-Digit PIN.

I also encourage checking the Remember my information for next time box. This way, you can file your forms without entering the PIN again.

Someone please help me too!  I am having similar issues as stated.  Truly about to hang it up.

I do have my Pin from the IRS so I called QB today to show me where to put it in QB.  We updated something and a couple hours later,I received an email saying there was a rejection etc etc.  Im not sure the agent that helped me knew what he was doing or not, because we never entered the 10 digit pin.  So I’m confused by all this and frustrated.

I’d appreciate any help—

Thanks!

I upgraded my payroll to unlimited employees but when you changed the key in my software the 10 digit pin for filing my federal forms disappeared and I don't know what it was?  How do I get the password back into my quickbooks?  I have the password for sending payment from quickbooks and that worked as that is the internet password and the 4 digit pin.

Hello @rwaife,

Thank you for dropping by here in the Community. I'm here to help you with your concern about filing federal forms in QuickBooks Desktop.

The ability to get the password back is unavailable. When you upgrade a payroll subscription, our system will require you to re-enter this payroll information for security purposes.

I suggest contacting the IRS E-File Help desk to retrieve your 10-digit pin. You can use this article to view the contact information (scroll down to Federal e-file/e-pay PIN is incorrect): Handle payroll e-file and e-pay rejections.

Once you have the details, add them back to QuickBooks. Please make sure to put a checkmark on the box beside Remember my information for next time to avoid entering each time you file forms (see screenshot below).

Additionally, I've attached a link you can use as a reference on how to check the filing status of your forms in QuickBooks: Check e-file or e-pay status in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Enhanced.

Drop me a comment if you have additional questions related to payroll, like the electronic filing in the Desktop version. I'm always here to help. Take care.

The IRS told me to file by paper in the mean time before I got my 10 digit pin just in case it was delayed in the mail.  Now I cannot figure out how to enter the pin into my QBooks and figured I had to wait until I file again the end of this next quarter. Am I correct?   I cannot find another way to enter it.

Hello there, @EllieClaireW58.

Thanks for getting back to us. Allow me to chime in and share information about entering your 10-digit pin from the IRS in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

Yes, you're correct. Since you can only enter your 10-digit pin when filing forms in QBDT, you need to keep it for now and wait for the next filing period.

Once the forms are available, you can follow the steps shared by my colleague @LieraMarie_A above to enter your 10-digit pin from the IRS.

To learn more about managing e-file and e-pay in QBDT, consider checking out these articles:

I also recommend visiting our website for more tips and other resources you can use in the future: Self-help articles.

Please post again or leave a comment in this thread if you have follow-up questions about this or anything else QuickBooks. I'll be here to help. Stay safe.

Thanks for reaching out about e-file and pin concerns. We'd want to make sure that you're able to recover it, cm2497.

The program remembers your credentials in the password vault so you don't have to type it in every time you file a form. However, QuickBooks does not keep a copy of it for security reasons.

You can reach out to the IRS to help you reset your pin. Let me share these contact details with you:

  • IRS EFTPS (e-pay) Help Desk: 800-555-4477
  • IRS e-file Help Desk: 866-255-0654

You can also check out this article for additional details: Payroll Tax Compliance Links. Once you receive your new pin, enter it inside QuickBooks when filing your next form.

Allow me to give you these articles for additional guidance and references:

Don't hesitate to get back here and let me know if you're able to reset the pin. You can also post more inquiries in the forum if you need anything else.
