Upgrade Installation Problem

I downloaded QB 2019 (currently running 2016) and was charged on my credit card.  I followed the instruction to move the download to Applications.  I see no further instructions as to how to install. I am stuck on the screen telling me to move the download.

Upgrade Installation Problem

Let me help you sort this out, @Whirlygirl.

It's possible that the QuickBooks function is damaged. Let's first uninstall QuickBooks and reinstall it using the clean install.

Here's how to uninstall:

  1. Close your QuickBooks.
  2. While on your desktop, from the Finder menu, select Go
  3. Choose Applications.
  4. Select the QuickBooks icon, and drag/move it to the Trash

Next, you'll have to remove both PLIST files from the User folder as well as the System folder. This will revert all preferences back to its default settings, which could cause the product to be unregistered.

To remove the PLIST files in the user folder, here's how:

  1. From the Finder menu, select Go.
  2. Hold down the Opinion key, then choose Library.
  3. Open the Preferences folder.
  4. Locate the PLIST files with QuickBooks and your version in the name, then move them to the Trash. You'll Delete everything containing "com.intuit.QuickBooks20XX."
  5. Empty the Trash.

Here's how to remove the PLIST files in the system folder:

  1. From a new Finder window or the icon on the desktop, open the Macintosh HD.
  2. Go to Library, then Preferences folder.
  3. Locate the PLIST files with QuickBooks and your version in the name, then move them to the Trash. You'll need to Delete everything containing "com.intuit.QuickBooks20XX."
  4. Empty the Trash.

Once done, you can now restart your device and reinstall the QuickBooks. To do this, you can check this article for the detailed steps: Install and set up QuickBooks Mac Desktop.

Thanks for joining the QuickBooks Community, jod.

I appreciate you taking the initial step installing your QuickBooks 2019. I’ll be your guide today, so you can successfully install the software.

Let me walk you through the step by step process.

  1. Go to the Downloads & Updates page to get the link for the version of QuickBooks you purchased.
  2. Choose Yes to All, then click on Next.
  3. Read and agree to the Software License Agreement, then select Next.
  4. Enter the License and Product numbers, then choose Next.
  5. Choose how you want to install the software.
Express: This allows the installer to make the recommended choices for you. If you choose this option, skip to Step 9.
Custom and Network Options: You can choose this if you'll be using multiple versions of QuickBooks Desktop on the computer or if you'll use QuickBooks to share data with other users on a network.
  6. Choose where you’ll be using QuickBooks.
Option 1: I'll be using QuickBooks on this computer.
Option 2: I'll be using QuickBooks on this computer, and I'll be storing our company file here so it can be shared over our network.
Option 3: I won't be using QuickBooks on this computer. I will be storing our company file on this computer so it can be shared over a network.
  7. Choose a new installation location or select Next.
  8. Click Install, then select Open QuickBooks to get started.
  9. Activate the software.

Don't move the download to your applications folder, you need to mount (open) the download .dmg file. Once mounted drag the application icon over the top of the application folder icon, once your application folder opens release.

hi @MetroWeschem ,

I confused with your last reply. Did you want to install QuickBooks 2019 for Mac or QuickBooks 2019 Pro edition for Windows?

Thanks for alerting me about this installation error, @MetroWeschem.

Let's ensure your device meets the system requirements when installing QuickBooks Pro or QuickBooks Mac.

Here are the minimum requirements for this QuickBooks Desktop for Mac:

  • At least MacOS 10.12 (Sierra); supported by MacOS 10.13 (High Sierra), MacOS 10.14 (Mojave)
  • Intel processor, Core 2 Duo or higher
  • Multi-user Server: Intel Core 2 Duo or higher processor to run the server
  • 2 GB RAM (4 GB RAM recommended)
  • 250 MB of available disk space
  • CD/DVD drive or Internet connection for the downloaded installation
  • Printer: 100% Macintosh-compatible printer, if you plan to print invoices, checks, deposit slips, lists, purchase orders, mailing labels, reports, or graphs
  • Checks: Use Intuit Checks if you plan to print checks. Canadian Image Ready Checks are not supported
  • Product registration required

If you're using QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2019, you may check this article for the complete list of requirements: QuickBooks Desktop 2019 system requirements.

Once checked, let's turn off your windows firewall and proceed with re-installing QuickBooks using the QBInstall Tool.

  1. Download the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool.
  2. Save the file to the local Desktop when prompted.
  3. Close any open programs.
  4. Double-click QuickBooksDesktopInstallDiagnosticTool.exe to open the QBInstall Tool.
  5. Choose Yes to agree to the license agreement.
  6. Select Proceed to start the scan.
  7. Run the QBInstall Tool.
  8. Restart the computer after running the tool.

Okay, so now I am beyond frustrated.

I have downloaded and ran the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool.

The Diagnostic tool found many things wrong with my server and fixed them.

I put the QB Pro 2019 Installation CD into my computer and ran it...

I am STILL getting the error that "Setup.exe" has stopped working!!

What do I do now?!!

Hello, @MetroWeschem.

I appreciate you performing the steps shared by my colleague to resolve the problem when installing QuickBooks.

The error message is commonly caused by an incorrectly configured system settings or irregular entries in the Windows registry. Let’s start fixing the issue by rebooting your computer.

Once done, update Windows to the latest release. Install missing updates pertaining to .Net Framework, MSXML, and C++. Here’s how:

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard.
  2. Type in Windows update in the search bar.
  3. Click Check for Updates.

Right after, try installing QuickBooks. If you continue to get the same result, I recommend reaching out to the Technical Support Team for further assistance.

They have tools such as screen sharing to easily determine the root cause of the error message. Follow the steps provided by my colleague above to contact phone support.

Please refer to the following articles for other troubleshooting solutions:

That should do it. Let me know how the call goes. I’ll keep an eye out for your response.

Upgrade Installation Problem

I got a new computer and the IT guy installed my QB Pro 2009 disk that he had with all of my other program disks (my old computer was that old). At some point though, I had already upgraded to QB Pro 2013 on my old computer and just downloaded the installation so I didn't have a disk. So now with the new computer, I have QB Pro 2009 installed and of course it can't read my company file because it's been upgraded to work with 2013. I have downloaded 2013 from the QB website and am attempting to install it. I get to the license agreement, click the box to accept, click Next, and then nothing happens. What do I do now?

I am trying to upgrade 2018 to 2020 Desktop Pro. I went through all the steps and when the computer restarted QB was completely gone! When I try to launch exe again, I keep getting this same message “Please restart your computer and re run the installer.”  I tried both the disk and the download, same message.
