Learn what’s new and changed with 1099s and W-2s this year.
The IRS has issued some new guidelines about electronic filings and corrections. Review this list to see what’s changed.
Paper filing threshold for W-2s and 1099s
The limit on how many paper filings you can file with the IRS has been lowered from 250 to 10. If you have 10 or more 1099s and W-2s combined, you must file them electronically. For example, if you have 9 employees and 1 1099 contractor, you'll need to e-file the W-2 and 1099 forms.
To learn more, see IRS and Treasury issue final regulations on e-file for businesses.
1099 IRS filing system
If you don't want to use QuickBooks, you can file 1099s directly with the IRS using their new Information Returns Intake System (IRIS). To e-file in IRIS, you must register for a Transmitter Control Code (TCC). It can take 45 days for you to receive the code.
To learn more about the requirements, and how to register with IRIS, see E-file Forms 1099 with IRIS.
Corrections rule for W-2s and 1099s
You must file corrections for 1099s and W-2s the same way you filed the original forms. For example, if you e-filed your 1099s or W-2s, you must also e-file your corrected forms. If you filed by paper, your correction must be on paper.
If you use the new IRIS tool for 1099s, there are limitations for corrections. The only forms available in IRIS to correct are the ones you have submitted through IRIS. To learn more, see Publication 5717 Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) Taxpayer Portal User Guide
