QB2021 desktop - can no longer see the detail in reports by clicking on it

I used Quickbooks 2016 Desktop until recently. When I would run a financial report, I could click on one of the line items, and QB would present the detail behind it. For example, in a P&L report, if I clicked on Sales, I could see a list of the customer deposits that made up the Sales.

I finally purchased QB 2021 Desktop this year. However, the new version doesn't seem to have this very convenient feature, or I can't figure how to use it if is still available. Thank you for your help.

QB2021 desktop - can no longer see the detail in reports by clicking on it

Hello there, sbsaadwu. Hope you're doing well today.

Regardless of the version, there isn't an update or changes on how QuickBooks works on the common financial reports. QuickBooks Desktop 2021 works the same way you used QuickBooks Desktop 2016 when it comes to reports.

What we can do is to make sure you've selected the accounting method. Then, click on the amount to view the associated transactions and the lists of your customer deposits. You can check these articles for additional information when doing a task in the program:

If you still need help, please go back here. I'll respond and help you further as soon as possible. Have a good one!

Thank you for the fast response. What do you mean by selecting the accounting method? I don't see that as an option. When I tried to click on the links you provided, there was nothing there.

QB2021 desktop - can no longer see the detail in reports by clicking on it

Hi there, sbsaadwu.

I'm here to share some updates about the QuickZoom feature.

The accounting method is also known as the report basis (cash and accrual) in QuickBooks. This option is used to analyze your business from different angles in the same report. You can find the Cash/Accrual radio buttons below the Dates menu.

Moreover, please know that the QuickZoom feature is still available in the 2021 version. Instead of clicking the category or account, you'll have to double-click the total amount to view the list of transactions comprising that particular amount. Follow these three simple steps to be guided in using it:

  1. Open your financial report.
  2. Position the mouse pointer over the total amount of item you want to view. When you hover over the amount, the cursor changes to a magnifying glass with a "Z" inside it.
  3. Double-click the amount to view the transactions list.

I also encourage reading these articles to ensure that you'll get the most out of QuickBooks' reporting capabilities:

QB2021 desktop - can no longer see the detail in reports by clicking on it

Hi:  I have the same problem as the poster.  Here's when it happens:

I have a 2nd "extended" screen (larger monitor).  When I drag Quickbooks onto the extended "screen", the hover-to-a-magnifying-glass doesn't happen.  It remains an arrow and is unclickable.  However, when I slide Quickbooks back to my laptop, the hover works and the click for detail works.  Is there a solution for this?  Very annoying.

QB2021 desktop - can no longer see the detail in reports by clicking on it

I have the same problem as HCF-Bookkeeper. I have 3 monitors. The QuickZoom feature in QuickBooks 2018 works on monitors 1 and 3, but not on monitor 3. The QuickZoom icon does not appear. This behavior is consistent over multiple company files. The problem is isolated to using the third monitor. Could an Intuit employee please escalate this so that it can be replicated and hopefully resolved at Intuit. Thanks.

By the way, the third monitor is above the working monitors, so it uses negative screen coordinates. That could very well be creating problems with QuickBooks' code.

Hello there, smoore33.

I'd like to help and make sure you can use the QuickZoom feature in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT)

If you have high-resolution monitor, you may need to change your default display settings in QuickBooks. We can perform troubleshooting steps to fix display issues like the one you experienced.

Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu.
  3. Type an search for "QuickBooks".
  4. Once you see the QuickBooks icon, right-click and select Open file location.
  5. In the folder, right-click the QuickBooks.exe file and click on Properties.
  6. Go to the Compatibility tab.
  7. Select the Disable display scaling on high DPI settings checkbox.
  8. Click on Apply and then OK.

After that, try to open a report just to see if you can now use the quickzoom feature on you monitor 3.

If you're still encountering the same issue, follow the next troubleshooting steps (Step 2 & 3) shown in this article: Fix screen issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

I've also included this link just in case you need to update your QuickBooks to the latest release.

Post your concerns or click the reply button for any follow-up questions about display settings. I'll be in touch. Have a great weekend!

Thanks, but I don't believe that would be worth trying. I have 40+ years of experience in IT and I suspect the problem is in QuickBooks code. No other programs exhibit this behavior. The problem is not with the monitor or screen, I suspect it is in the code that tracks the mouse pointer position and enables QB features based on that location. The screen on which this feature of QB does not work is configured in Windows to be above the primary monitor(s). Thus, the mouse pointer screen position would use negative numbers for the Y dimension. I suspect that the QB code that deals with negative screen coordinates is failing. In fact, if I tell Windows that the top screen is to the left of the primary monitor, not above it--thus with all 3 monitors on one level (therefore the Y dimension would never go negative)--QuickZoom works fine. However, I am hoping I will be able to use the actual layout of the screens in Windows and QuickBooks. I'd appreciate it if you would escalate this to explore that line of attack. Thanks.

Thank you for directing me to that page. I guess I overlooked it because I couldn't believe how many limitations or bugs Intuit seems to have given up on fixing with multiple monitor support. You can't arrange one monitor higher than another monitor and you can't adjust the DPI settings to match the needs of different monitors--those are show-stoppers for many of us. By the way, for others who are trying this and contrary to what that article seems to be saying, I have found that using "One Window" view, rather than "Multiple Windows" works better. With "One Window" view everything except QuickZoom in some reports seems to work that way.

Hi there, guerin47.

I'm here to make sure you'll be able to use the QuickZoom feature in QuickBooks Desktop.

Before we do the necessary troubleshooting steps, make sure you have the needed updates for the 2022 version. This can help us avoid any issues when using the program.

If you're using a multi-monitor setup, you'll want to adjust your monitor settings. There are limitations when using this setup, and this might affect certain QuickBooks pages from popping up. This article can guide you on what to change for your settings: Use QuickBooks on multiple screens or in Multi-Monitor mode.

If the issue persists, I'd recommend running our QuickBooks Tool Hub. I'll guide you on how:

  1. Download the latest Tool Hub version from this article: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.
  2. Run the installer after downloading.
  3. Once installed, open the Tool Hub program.
  4. Click the Program issues tab to start the fixing process.

However, if none of the troubleshooting work for you, I recommend getting in touch with one of our Customer Care Team.  This way, they'll be able to share your screen and take an in-depth look to see what may be causing the issue.

Here's how to reach them:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Select Contact Us.
  4. Give a brief description of your issue, then select Let's talk, and then choose a way to connect. Phone support may be limited due to volume.

To make sure you get prioritized on your concern. Please check out our support hours and contact us at a time convenient: Support hours and types.

I've added this article to learn more about customizing reports in QuickBooks Desktop: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop.

Let me know how the step goes in the comment section as I want to ensure that you'll be able to use this feature. I'll be right here to help you further. Have a nice day!

Hi. I am also having the same problem and didn’t realize until I saw your post that the issue is when the program is viewed on the second monitor. It is really annoying because I need for the program to be on the second monitor when preparing financial statements. Thanks for making me realize that I am not crazy and have you found a solution to this?  Thanks.

The issue occurs when the additional monitor(s) are positioned ABOVE your main screen.  By adjusting them to a level position via Windows Display Settings the ability to double click zoom in QB returns.  The trade-off is your mouse tracking may be different from the physical arrangement of your monitors.

Hope this helps!

We appreciate you joining the thread, @Lapidskorner.

You can perform the Verify and Rebuild feature inside QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). This way, the program can run a self-check inside its system to determine the root cause of the problem and start fixing it by rebuilding the data. We'll write down the steps below to get you going:

  1. Go to Window then select Close All.
  2. Go to File, then select Utilities.
  3. Select Verify Data. If you see:
  4. QuickBooks detected no problems with your data—your data is clean, and you don’t need to do anything else.
  5. An error message—search for it on our QuickBooks Desktop support site for how to fix it.
  6. Your data has lost integrity—Data damage was found in the file. Rebuild your data to fix

Refer to this page for more detail: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.

Moreover, you can check these articles to help you keep add more details to your and keep your current report settings:

When I hover over the numbers, the magnifying glass with a Z doesn't appear.  It's strange, some times it will appear, but most of the time it doesn't.  Any clue as to what may be causing that?  Thanks!

@Lapidskorner , thanks for volunteering your wisdom for further problems.  Ultimately, it seems when I hover of the line item, it doesn't turn into that magnifying glass and i can't double click it.  I can right click it but the interface to drill down into the details isn't there.  I've tried the Verify Data thing... It came back noting that there were no problems.  Any idea how to fix it?

Thanks!

Question - Are you using more than one monitor?  It's a known deep bug on QB Desktop.. that there's some strange code bug where .. if you have a high monitor and low monitor, the high monitors can't do drill downs on reports.  i have 4 monitors in a square.  the top two monitors can not drill in on any QB reports.  Just move QB to a lower monitor screen and see if that solves your problem.  By not allowing you to drill down, there's obvo no magnifying glass.
