My previous accountant used my debit card and purchased quickbooks desktop 2021. They registered it in their name. Now I have a new accountant and I would like my software and files to be transferred to my name. How do I facilitate this transfer?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Quickbooks rarely transfers licenses and they make it not so easy but there are procedures.
There are only a few conditions where Intuit® allows a user to transfer its QuickBooks Desktop license to a new owner. A user requires filling and sending the “Transfer a License” form that will be reviewed by Intuit® after submission. Once the form gets submitted, you will get notified about your QuickBooks license transfer request through email within 24 to 48 hours. Following are the circumstances where Intuit® allows you to change the ownership of QuickBooks software:
IMPORTANT: You can directly request Intuit® for license transfer by logging in to your CAMPS account and filling up the QuickBooks Transfer a License Form.
In a situation where a business is sold to a new user including all the assets then in order to transfer the license, both the parties are required to submit a completed and signed (TOL) QuickBooks Transfer of License Form. Along with the TOL Intuit® also requires Notarized Bill of Sale to be signed and submitted by both the parties.

I've been trying for almost 3 hours to accomplish a license transfer and I'm being told by Intuit that it can't be done...
They have sent me to the actual form (which I completed days ago) and then support sends me to this string which says it CAN be done.
Why is this so difficult? I just need to transfer one of the products in my account to her account, as it's her business using it.
Please help!

Hi there, ilener.

I also appreciate you for providing detailed information about your concern. . I'd be pleased to help share confirmation so you'll be able to transfer the license to another account.
Transferring a license to another company is possible. However, you'll need to contact our QuickBooks Support Team again. They have the tools to pull your account and help you perform the steps in a secure process.
Please refer to this article to see steps on how you can move your company file to another location on the same computer or move your entire QuickBooks data folder: Move your company files to another computer.

Hi ChristieAnn,
Thank you for the response. I have to tell you that the task (that should have been so easy) was a nightmare!
Total time was almost 4 hours.
I called first (45 minute hold time) and spoke to someone who insisted that it was not possible to transfer a license to a different account. She kept insisting and when I asked to be transferred to a supervisor, she got a bit rude telling me that I would get the same response from a supervisor...ok, transfer me anyhow. She confirmed my phone number, said she was transferring me, then disconnected me.
At this point, I attempted online chat. I got someone finally that passed the chat to someone else, then a 3rd pass off to someone else. She sent me a link for the "transfer a license" which I had already completed and submitted 2 days previous. I told her I already did that, but it did not transfer. Then she sent me a link with the instructions to transfer a license. Thank you, but I know how to fill in the fields, as I had done previously. She also insisted that it couldn't be done. I was getting upset and responding that the links SHE sent to me validated that it COULD be done, so why was everyone telling me it couldn't be done???
I finally received a call from a supervisor that checked what I had already done and did the final step from her end to make sure the license was transferred.
Again, almost 4 HOURS to complete such a simple task.
I'm thinking the training of some customer service employees should be tweaked a bit!!

We are preparing for an asset sale in the near future and will want to transfer the Quickbooks Desktop License. When this happens, will all customer and employee info remain? Will we also be able to transfer our Enhanced Payroll subscription?
I'm here to answer all your questions about transferring the QuickBooks Desktop license, CarriageCrossing.
When transferring your QuickBooks license, all the customers' and employee's information will remain on the company file. This means the new administrator will be able to view their details.
Once you're ready, please see this article for the detailed process: Change the Primary Contact on your QuickBooks Account.
Also, yes, you can transfer your Enhanced Payroll subscription. Before proceeding, please note that each payroll service can only support one company file per EIN. Thus, you'll have to remove the service key in the old company before activating it in the new one.
Additionally, I've included these articles that'll help you learn more about managing your QuickBooks subscriptions:
Feel free to comment down below if you have any other concerns or questions about transferring your QuickBooks license and payroll service. I'm always glad to help in any way I can.
I am a retiring bookkeeper who has had sole responsibility for formal documents for this church and subscriptions to processes. I have been the SOLE operator of QB for this church since 2012. NOW I find out there is "No Primary Contact". I sat the account up in my personal QB account because I intended to do books for several small churches. NO where in the set up process was there a warning about the Primary Contact.
I have summitted required documents to change the primary to me. THEN the QB "BOARD" demanded copies of drivers' licenses from My Board members. THEY HAVE REFUSED. I do see this looks like an A-1 scam from an outside group of people. They have offered notarized statements with the information on it. I had submitted EVERYTHING required on the first round.. WHY are there additional requests that were NOT printed on their list of required documents. We are a SMALL church. I have spent HOURS trying to change the Primary person. This whole system of disconnect is created with big business in mind and not for the small business. I would NEVER recommend QB for a small business. Is there ANY WAY TO GET HELP? Don't send me to the online info. BEEN THERE MANY TIMES. I need a judgement from on HIGH. Case:[removed].......
I didn't see you mention anything about CAMPS. Can you login into your CAMPS as the Primary Admin?
I know how it feels when the paid QuickBooks license is under a different name. I can share some tips and route you to the right support so this issue will be taken care of as soon as possible.
While we're unable to pull up an account here in the Community for security reasons. You can log in to your CAMPS account to file for QuickBooks Transfer a License Form. Also, you can change the payment information in there or remove it to avoid future charges. Then, you'll get an email notification within 24-48 hours.
If you're unable to access your account. I'd suggest reaching out to our phone support again to submit a request for transfer.
Here's how:
1. Open QuickBooks.
2. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop help.
3. Choose Contact Us.
4. Give a brief description of your issue, then click Let's talk and then select a way to connect.

What is a CAMPS account? I have used QB since 1997 and have taught it at the college level. I have never heard of a CAMPS account. I got signed into it but it just has a blank screen.
The transfer is so difficult you wonder why anyone bothers. The easier you make it, the more people will do it.
If I'm not mistaken, they introduced CAMPS in 2017 or 2018. If you can't find your license there, chances are your version is older than that year.

I have a 2020 edition for a company that went out of business. Since I was the purchaser (and user), I donated it to another non-profit. Now QB "support" says I am not on the account. Have a problem with payroll (p/r serial number transferred from the person who was supposed to be doing the non-profit's payroll). This is the first I have heard of this.
You must find your QBD 2020 license on CAMPS after you activate it for the first time. Then you should be able to login as Primary Contact. Otherwise, Intuit will not acknowledge your claim and request to transfer it.
I keep signing in to the transfer license page and it is blank - nothing is there.

I have a client that her CPA sold the firm and she doesn’t want to stay with that CPA and use me. She gave me a complete copy of the QB backup, but the previous CPA is being evil and keeps changing the password back to them since it shows them as the owner. I paid for a pro-advisor subscription, been with you 34 years, and we have payroll due this week and we can’t trust that evil CPA not to go in and change the password. How they are doing that when we are on a different computer at a different firm is beyond me. In company file, I changed the ownership to me, but for some reason it seems the old CPA can sign in at his firm and change the password which affects me. Clients have 90 days to tell the new CPA they aren’t staying and want their files so it’s a violation of Ethics for the old CPA, but nevertheless, we need to get this resolved as we have payroll or over 100 employees to do. Please help.

I am confused. My question is does your client have their own QuickBooks Desktop license? If your client use their own license, can they access CAMPS as Primary Contact?
Hi Karen,
I would recommend getting in touch with our QB Desktop team so they can check your account, They are open on weekdays from 6 AM to 6 PM PT.
If you have any other concerns, feel free to go back to this thread.
I am having the same nightmare. We use QB for a small non-profit and the treasurer changes regularly. We should NOT have to transfer the license in a nightmare hassle of a process for this task EVERY SINGLE TIME. I've been at it for MONTHS now trying to get features of QB to function.
