Troubleshoot Crash Catcher

SOLVEDby QuickBooks1Updated September 25, 2023

Learn how to fix Crash Catcher displaying when using QuickBooks for Mac.

The Error Catcher shows up when QuickBooks encounters an unexpected issue. Use the following solutions to fix and prevent the issue from recurring.

Note: Send the crash report presented by the Crash Catch. This helps us improve the product so we can prevent the same issue from happening in the future.

Solution 1: Restart your computer

QuickBooks Desktop processes sometimes get stuck. Restart your computer to give it a fresh start.

Solution 2: Make sure QuickBooks is up to date

QuickBooks receives software updates from time to time. Update to the latest release version to make sure you have all the software improvements and bug fixes.

Solution 3: Use Verify and Rebuild utility

Use the Verify Utility to identify if there’s any data that needs fixing. And the Rebuild utility helps fix issues found.

  1. Go to File menu, then select Utilities.
  2. Select Verify Data. If a problem is detected:
    1. Go to File menu, then select Utilities.
    2. Select Rebuild Data.
    3. Run Verify Data again.
    4. If it still detects a problem, restore a backup.

Solution 4: Run your computer in Safe Boot mode

This helps in figuring out if there’s a conflict between QuickBooks and something installed on your computer.

  1. Shutdown your computer.
  2. Press the Power button, then press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard until you see your Desktop.
  3. Open QuickBooks and perform the same task you were trying to complete before the Crash Catcher appeared.
Note: If you’re unable to reproduce the problem, this might indicate a conflict between QuickBooks and something installed on your computer.
  4. Return to normal mode by restarting your computer without pressing anything.
  5. If the issue persists in normal mode, contact an IT professional.

Solution 5: Add New Mac OS user

To determine if the permission of the user is causing the error, create a new one.

  1. Select the Apple menu, then choose System Settings.
  2. Select the Users & Groups icon.
  3. Select the + button to add a new user with Administrator permissions.
  4. Sign in with this new user.
  5. Open QuickBooks, then try to reproduce the issue.

Solution 6: Delete .plist files

Delete the existing .plist file for QuickBooks to create a newer one. This ensures that the file isn’t damaged in any way, but doing so removes all the preferences you set up.

Step 1: Delete User .plist files

  1. Go to your Desktop.
  2. On the Finder menu, choose Go, then press and hold the Option key.
  3. Select Library, then choose the Settings folder.
  4. Find the following .plist files with QuickBooks and CrashCatcher in the name of the current version. (find all versions installed if upgrading):
    Example: com.intuit.QuickBooks2019.plist and com.intuit.QuickBooks2019.CrashCatcher.plist
  5. Move the files you found to the trash.
  6. Empty the trash after you finish moving the files.

Step 2: Delete System .plist files

  1. Open Finder, then choose Macintosh HD.
Note: If you can’t find the Macintosh HD, you need to enable it in preferences. Select Finder, then select Settings. Go to the Sidebar tab, then put a check mark on disks.
  2. Select Library, then choose the Settings folder.
  3. Find the following .plist files with QuickBooks and CrashCatcher in the name of the current version. (find all versions installed if upgrading):
    Example: com.intuit.QuickBooks2019.plist and com.intuit.QuickBooks2019.CrashCatcher.plist
  4. Move the files you found to the trash.
  5. Empty the trash after you finish moving the files.
  6. Restart your computer.
