Fix bank error 185

Bank error 185 means your bank or financial institution requires more information after you enter your credentials.This usually happens when a bank has additional security requirements like security questions or one-time passcodes.

Re-establish your bank connection

Have the original user who set up the bank connection re-establish it. To do this, select Send a request in the error message. An email will be sent to them with a link allowing them to log back into QuickBooks Online.

Answer security questions

If your financial institution uses security questions, you must provide the answers in QuickBooks Online.

  • Provide answers: Enter your answer when prompted by the bank.
  • Multiple questions: You may see error 185 again during the next update if your bank has multiple security questions to verify.
  • Automatic updates: QuickBooks Online remembers your answers and will provide them for you in future updates.
  • Troubleshooting: If a security question doesn't appear, disable your browser's pop-up blocker or try using a different browser.

Enter one-time passwords

If your bank requires a one-time password, you must retrieve and enter it manually.

  1. Get your one-time password from your mobile device via text, call, or security app.
  2. Enter the password in QuickBooks Online each time you see Error 185.

If the issue persists, sign in to QuickBooks using an incognito or private browser, or try other browser troubleshooting options.
