The QuickBooksDBXX service on Local Computer started and then stopped

by Intuit Updated 5 months ago

When you try to start the Database Manager Service manually, you receive the error message:

The QuickBooksDBXX service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.

This may be caused by a damaged QuickBooks Database Server Manager. Try the following solutions to resolve the issue.

  1. From the File menu, select Utilities, then Host multi-user access.
  2. On the Host multi-user access window, select Yes.
  1. Press the Windows key+R to bring up the Run window.
  2. Type services.msc, then press Enter. You can also search for services.msc on the Windows search bar.
  3. In the services window, look for the QuickBooksDBXX service that matches your version:
    • QuickBooks 2020: QuickBooksDB30
    • QuickBooks 2019: QuickBooksDB29
    • QuickBooks 2018: QuickBooksDB28
  4. Double-click the QuickBooksDBXX service.
  5. Set the Startup Type to Automatic and Service Status to Running or Started.
  6. Go to the Recovery tab.
  7. From the First failure dropdown, select Restart the Service. This automatically restarts the QuickBooksDB service if it fails. Do the same for Second failure and Subsequent failures.
  8. Select OK to save the changes.
  9. Reboot your computer.

Reinstall using the default installation path:

  • C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks(year) (32-bit)
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks (year) (64-bit)
Important: Do not install in a mapped drive.
Important: If you receive an error stating that your Windows user account doesn't have the appropriate permissions, log in as a Windows admin or ask assistance from an IT professional.
  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. On your keyboard, press Windows key+R to bring up the Run window.
  3. Type services.msc, then press Enter.
  4. Right-click the service that matches your version, then choose Properties.
    • QuickBooks 2020: QuickBooksDB30
    • QuickBooks 2019: QuickBooksDB29
    • QuickBooks 2018: QuickBooksDB28
  5. Go to the Log On tab, then set the service to This Account.
Note: Do not select Local System. Only some set-ups allow it to work on Local System.
  6. Delete qbdataserviceuserXX:
    1. On your keyboard, press Windows key+R to open the Run window.
    2. Type Control Panel, then select OK.
    3. Select User Accounts, then Remove user account.
    4. Select the qbdataserviceuserXX that matches your version, then Delete.
  7. Relaunch QuickBooks.
Note: If hosting was started, turn it off then turn it back on again. If hosting wasn't started, turn it on.
  8. When a prompt asking to run Database Server Manager pops up, select OK.
  9. Open the Database Server Manager and scan the file. This recreates the qbdataserviceuser.
