Hello, eelhslaw.
There’s another way of transferring your QuickBooks file from one computer to another. This process involves creating a backup copy from old computer and restoring it to the new computer.
For detailed steps, please refer to this article: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Getting-Started/Move-your-company-files-to-another-computer/....

Hi MikiD,
First - Thank you for replying on a Sunday!
I was aware of the backup and restore process., but was hoping for a fix for the failed Migrator Tool which appeared simpler.
I will use the process suggested.
Thanks!
Hi eelhslaw,
I'll share your thank-you note with my colleague, MikiD. Then, I'll report the error you get when using Migrator Tool. I'd also encourage you to send a bug report from your company file. You can go to Help, choose Send Feedback Online, and select Bug Report.
If there's anything else you need, feel free to comment below.
Same exact thing happening to me with Desktop Pro 2018 after multiple attempts. Brand new Windows 10 PC that I'm trying to move to, with a solid internet connection. Now will have to try the more involved approach above, hopefully that works.

I have tried both the migrator tool as well as the backup/restore and I cannot get either one to transfer my QB from old computer to new computer...any advice would be appreciated!
Hi there, @dallasbrews and @staceyfett,
I appreciate you both trying the migrator tool and the backup/restore steps. If you have performed the steps above, @dallasbrews, please let me know so I'll be able to get back to you.
For you, @staceyfett, I'll help ensure you're able to transfer all the QuickBooks data from your old to new computer. You'll need to manually locate and copy the files from the restored backup file on your new computer. Here's how:
Here are some of the correct locations when doing the manual copies for each file:
For more information about the appropriate locations, you can read through the "Restore custom templates and forms missing from a restored backup" section through this article: Move Your Company File to Another Computer.
This will get you on the right direction, @staceyfett. I'm here anytime you have other concerns. Stay positive always!
I was really hoping the migrator tool would work. When I try to run it, nothing happens at all. I just tried to call tech support, and they did not even know the tool existed. Where can I get help to make this work?
We appreciate you taking time to try all the suggested steps provided by my colleagues, khuppva.
We use the Migrator Tool to move QuickBooks Desktop and company files. You might have called a different department that's why they're not familiar with the tool.
You can get the right phone support here: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
You can also access it in-product:
Please let me know if I can provide any other additional support.
Same here. Migrator tool not working.
This has been a 6-month issue with me not being able to run my company books and I feel duped. The worst part is, I look out of my window at the Rancho Penasquitos Intuit campus and KNOW the help may be in there, but online, all I get is lazy excuses and honestly rude answers.
Here is my situation:
- Reached transactions limit
- Cannot repair company
- Cannot backup company
- Cannot move to another PC
- I am out of options!
I tried your online QB that a sales rep recommended and guess what? I couldn't print checks. Yeah, that's right. No check printing.
So then I spent more money on The latest an greatest local version of your software and still nothing. When I did a tech support chat, I was basically treated with an "OH WELL!"
Next I tried FB chat for support. They asked the problem, I told them. 2-3 days later I was asked "Hi, what seems to be the issue?" I replied and the response was "Hi, what seems to be your issue?" This went on and on. Would you like the transcripts? Please say yes.
Here we are with a brand new PC, the full hope of moving my company data to a fresh WIN10 box and now the migration tool will not take my password.
If you are an Intuit rep and you genuinely want to help me out, please let me know. I am 6 months behind on cleaning up my business due to your software errors and more importantly the lack of assistance by your "help" people.
At this point, I feel nothing but righteous indignation towards QB.
Encountering some errors in your company file is tough to deal with, gilrucker.

The entry of the password in the migration tool. Doesn' work this should be a very easy process. The password is correct but the application does not allow any version tried it 5 times over and used different passwords.
Now what >??? creating a backup does not move all files and setups.
Hello, @yourhmeteam.
Let me share additional information on how to move your company file from one QuickBooks to the other.
To use this feature, you must be the QuickBooks Administrator and you must have Windows Admin privileges for the new computer where QuickBooks will be installed, which must also have Internet connectivity. You also need a USB flash drive with enough free space to hold your QuickBooks files. QuickBooks will even tell you how much space you will need on the flash drive as part of the migration process.
To move your company using the Migrator Tool, here's how:
On the old computer:
On the new computer:
You can get the steps here: Move to or reinstall QuickBooks Desktop in another computer
Meanwhile, to install QuickBooks manually to your new device, follow the steps below:
For more detailed instructions, you can check this article: Installing QuickBooks Desktop.
Once installed, you can now restore the backup copy of the company file from the old location to the new computer. Here's how:
You can read through this article in case you get installation issues along the way: Using the QBInstall tool.
Keep me posted if you have other questions. I'm always here to help.
QB team. Instead of saying "if the migrate tool doesn't work for you, there is another way...."
How about saying the "The migrate tool does not work. You will HAVE TO do the manual method."
I've tried the migrate tool and I get the "something wrong" error. Seems like everyone else gets that too. There is something wrong, IT DOESN'T WORK!
I understand how important this is to you, @BillyRay59.
As of this time, our engineering team is currently working to get this fix. As an alternative, you may want to follow the steps provided by my colleague juVielL above on manually moving your files using a USB flash drive.
Also, I encourage you to reach out to our support team. This way, they'll include you to the list of affected users. Rest assured, once any updates are available, you'll be notified via email.

I know this is an old thread but hopefully it helps someone. I went to the website and downloaded the version I was transferring first. Ran the installer and then cancelled when it wanted my SN. Migration tool then worked.
1. Go here and download/install the version you are moving https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products
2. Cancel when it wants your S/N and code
3. Run migrator tool
FINALLY! This worked. Thanks! QB Support - please note this solution worked and should allow you to determine how to make the migrator utility work correctly the first time.
@MBixbywhich solution worked? I'm having the same issue.
Let me help you move your company file, slfpd.
The Migrator Tool helps in transferring your company data to your new computer. Another way to transfer the file is to manually install the QuickBooks Desktop. These are the steps on how to do it:
You can also read these articles for more details: Moving your company files.

Get back to me anytime of you have other questions. I'm looking forward to assisting you again.
Thank you for the steps. I had tried those steps, the migrator tool simply did not work for me. I did the migration the "old-fashioned" way and it worked perfectly.
thank you for your assistant. I had already tried those steps, the Migrator Tool simply did not work for me. I did it the "old fashioned" way and it worked perfectly.
In order to follow the other process, Quickbooks must first be downloaded onto the new computer. How do you do this without paying for it again? I just bought an updated version last year and don't want to have to spend another $200 after just purchasing a new computer.
In order to follow the steps not using the migration tool, QB needs to be downloaded onto the new computer. How is this accomplished without purchasing a new product? I just bought an updated version last year and don't want to spend another $200 now that I have just had to purchase a new computer.
Thank you
How does Quickbooks get downloaded onto the new computer without a new purchase?
