Error using migrator tool,

I follow the steps to move to USB Flash drive, Insert USB Flash drive in new PC
Enter 1 time pw and get error message "something's not right - try again later"
I have confirmed new PC has internet connection, followed all steps listed.

Tried deleting USB files and retry process - same result

Using QB Desktop Pro 2018,  any help is appreciated!

Hello, eelhslaw.

There’s another way of transferring your QuickBooks file from one computer to another. This process involves creating a backup copy from old computer and restoring it to the new computer.

Hi MikiD,

First - Thank you for replying on a Sunday!

I was aware of the backup and restore process., but was hoping for a fix for the failed Migrator Tool which appeared simpler.

I will use the process suggested.

Thanks!

Hi eelhslaw,

I'll share your thank-you note with my colleague, MikiD. Then, I'll report the error you get when using Migrator Tool. I'd also encourage you to send a bug report from your company file. You can go to Help, choose Send Feedback Online, and select Bug Report.

If there's anything else you need, feel free to comment below.

I know this is an old thread but hopefully it helps someone. I went to the website and downloaded the version I was transferring first.  Ran the installer and then cancelled when it wanted my SN. Migration tool then worked.

1.  Go here and download/install the version you are moving https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products

2. Cancel when it wants your S/N and code

3. Run migrator tool

FINALLY!  This worked. Thanks!  QB Support - please note this solution worked and should allow you to determine how to make the migrator utility work correctly the first time.

Let me help you move your company file, slfpd.

The Migrator Tool helps in transferring your company data to your new computer. Another way to transfer the file is to manually install the QuickBooks Desktop. These are the steps on how to do it:

  1. Create a backup company file from your old computer. Save it on a flash drive or an external device.
  2. On your new computer, go to Downloads & Updates page. Select and install the QuickBooks Desktop you're using.
  3. Open the new QuickBooks and restore the file.
  4. Make sure to update your payroll tax table if you have payroll.

You can also read these articles for more details: Moving your company files.

Refer to this guide if there's an error with your back up file: Fix backup company file issues in QuickBooks Desktop

Get back to me anytime of you have other questions. I'm looking forward to assisting you again.

How does Quickbooks get downloaded onto the new computer without a new purchase?

March 20, 2020

Migrator tool not working for me either.  Surprise.  I thought it sounded too good to be true.

The solution seems to be to backup the database, move it to the new machine and download Quickbooks from the download page.  That sounds straightforward enough, except . . . Quickbooks' download site does not have my version.

I am using Enterprise: 2019 Manufacturing and Wholesale edition.

The download site only shows Enterprise 19.0.

How to I make this work?

You will see that option when to choose industry in the installation wizard.

Thank you Fiat Lux, that's exactly how it worked.  QB is now up and running, but I'll have to wait until the end of the day to move the database.

Not working for me either. First you have to be in a client to even start it on old computer. Then it does it and says the client you were in which was closed now wasn't copied. The process completes and I go to the new computer and it says the password is incorrect which isn't true the app doesn't work. Not sure if W7 to W10 is an issue. Tired of these types of things never working.

Before I try to use the Migrator tool, I'd like to know if it can copy my QB company files if they are in a separate partition from the system drive.

Hello, Maddycar1.

I appreciate doing what you can do move your company file. I'll share a guide to help you resolve the error when transferring to a new computer.

You can get around the error by manually downloading the QuickBooks Installer. Simply go to the new computer and download the installer from here: https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/product.

After downloading, simply open the installer and install QuickBooks normally. This article might prove useful to you if you need help: Install QuickBooks Desktop.

Finally, move your company file after setting up your Desktop program.

If you're ready to work on the new computer, you can check out our guides on how to manage your business in QuickBooks. Start by browsing a topic from the general support page. Then, look for an article of your choice.

I'd be more than happy to lend a hand again if you need help in QuickBooks Desktop. Add as much as details as you can to your reply and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

I have a new computer with Window 10 and have tried several times to use the Migrator tool.  It gets to 75% downloading on the new computer and then stops and says that it cannot be installed.  I always do a back up to a remote storage drive but you cannot "restore" unless the program is installed on the computer.  I don't have a CD because I upgraded using a download.  I also have payroll which is on a subscription.

It's nice to see you here in the Community, @JL52.

Yes, you're right. You cannot restore unless the program is not installed on the computer. That said, you'll have to install QuickBooks first.

To install and use QBDT on your second computer. Here's how:

  1. Go to your new PC and install QuickBooks.
  2. Complete the download information and click Search.
  3. Click the Download button.
  4. Once the download is complete, the installation will automatically start. If it doesn't, double-click the installer file to proceed.
  5. Select Yes to All then hit Next.
  6. Mark the Software License Agreement then click Next.
  7. Enter the License and Product numbers, then hit Next.
  8. Pick the type of installation you want.
  9. Choose where you want to save QuickBooks.
  10. Pick a new install location or select Next to install to the default directory.
  11. Click Install.

I'm including some resource that walks a user through the install process:

Once done, go back to the old one and create a backup copy of your company file. Then, copy the backup file to your new one using a flash drive or other external device or through a network, if they're connected, and restore the backup on the new PC. For your reference, you can also check out this article for more information: Move your company files to another computer.

In the meantime, you can re-run the .bat file and see if the same thing happens. Please note that the duration of the migration will depend on the speed of your computer and internet, and the size of your company file. You can get the steps here: Move to or reinstall QuickBooks Desktop on another computer.

In case you'd like to run the program in a multi-user system, you'll need to make sure you have multiple licenses for each workstation. To learn more about this feature, please check out this article: Set up multi-user network.

Let me know if you have follow-up questions about the process. I'm right here to assist you further. Keep safe, @JL52.
