Built With Pride: Brendan Pang, Bumplings

Name: Brendan Pang

Location: Perth, Western Australia

Describe yourself in three words: Ambitious, creative, motivated.

What is the name of your business and what do you do?

The name of my business is Bumplings. We are a dumpling shop located in Fremantle, Western Australia serving Chinese-Mauritian street food with a focus on dumplings and noodles. We also offer other services such as cooking classes and catering.

Why did you decide to start your own business? How did you get started?

I started my own business out of a dislike for working for other people. I love food and cooking, and I applied for MasterChef 2018. After that, I gained experience in different kitchens before opening my pop-up which has now become a permanent fast food restaurant.

In just a few words, how does running your own business make you feel?

It keeps me on my toes and makes me feel proud and excited about what is to come!

What are some of the hurdles or roadblocks you’ve faced as an LGBTQ+ small business owner, specifically? How do you overcome them?

Comments on social media can be disheartening. However, success is what you make it to be. So ignoring these people and remembering why I do what I do each day has helped me overcome this.

As an LGBTQ+ small business owner, do you feel you’ve been granted the same access and opportunities that other small business owners in your community have been given?

Yes, I believe Perth is a progressive city and the business opportunities I have come across have been incredible.

What unique perspectives do you feel you bring to the small business economy as an LGBTQ+ business owner?

I bring a way of operating that is forward-thinking, which is not always the case in commercial kitchens that are traditionally male-dominated and emotionless. I strive to continue to celebrate diversity and inclusivity.

What are some of your major wins or accomplishments since starting your business? What are your proudest moments?

Serving 10,000 in our first four nights! We went from operating one night a week as a pop-up to five nights a week, grew the team from six to 12 in a year, and published a cookbook.

What are the next big plans you have for your business?

I am currently writing a second cookbook and working on expanding Bumplings.

When you’re having a tough day, who or what inspires you to keep going?

When I am having a bad day, focusing on the vision that drove me to get started in the first place is what I strive for. Being passionate about what I do is the most important thing.

How can LGBTQ+ business owners give back to their community?

At the very core of it all, I think providing a safe space to work in that is inclusive is crucial. Be clear that diversity is encouraged and put it down on paper—whether that be through your business practice framework or by sending a group message in email. The hands-on stuff is also important. Partake in campaigns, provide training, and follow up.

What advice would you give to other LGBTQ+ small business owners just starting out?

I would say “passion drives,” so always be clear about what you care about the most and prioritise it. Starting small and researching has been my process for success. That, and keeping it simple but focused.

What’s your “power song” and why?

“Hard to Love” by Hamzaa is my power song! It reminds me to love myself in tough times. The melody alone picks me up regardless of where I am or what I am doing.
