Tell us about your business.

We're a boutique gym that focuses on creating a welcoming space for individuals who may not feel comfortable in traditional gym settings. We specialize in small, 3-5 person weightlifting classes and provide access to exercise equipment outside of class hours.

Our ethos is centered around inclusivity and empowerment. We prioritize creating a queer and trans-affirming community where everyone, regardless of gender, sexuality, or identity, can feel accepted and valued. We believe in fostering joy, resilience, and healing through movement, helping our members build a positive relationship with their bodies based on strength, connection, and intention. We’re committed to providing a safe, judgment-free space where all bodies can find liberation and celebrate their unique strengths.

What sets us apart is our approachable weightlifting programs tailored for those new to weightlifting or gym environments. Our small group classes offer a blend of personalized training and group camaraderie, ensuring each member receives the attention and support they need to thrive. At Han Training, movement isn't just exercise; it's a tool for personal liberation and empowerment. We embrace embodiment—listening to and trusting one’s body—as a pathway to self-discovery and community empowerment.

Why did you decide to start your own business? What inspired the idea?

My initial motivation for starting to train was not to open a business, but rather to give back to the community, as I found I had the capacity in my schedule to do so. Over time, it became evident that there was a significant need for accessible movement and training, particularly within queer, trans, and other marginalized communities. As my efforts gained traction on social media and interest continued to grow, I recognized the potential to make a meaningful impact. This realization prompted me to take the next step and formally establish the business.

How did you get started?

I didn't initially set out to start a business. I pursued certification as a trainer with the intention of serving marginalized communities. My journey began quite organically, as I started working independently on a passion project and side hustle. As demand grew, it became clear that there was a real opportunity to expand. This increasing interest ultimately led to the establishment of a brick-and-mortar space.

Building a business requires more than just individual effort; it necessitates a strong, supportive network.

What is the biggest lesson you learned in the first year?

Every lesson I learned along the way has been incredibly valuable. There's so much involved in running a business, and perhaps the most crucial aspect is having a deep belief in what you're doing, along with a support system that shares that belief. What I'm emphasizing is that building a business requires more than just individual effort; it necessitates a strong, supportive network.

Were there any things about running a business you didn’t know when you started? How did you teach yourself?

I had to learn pretty much everything from scratch. With my background in art, running a business was never something I had considered before. I opened the space because there was a real need for the service I was providing. Most of what I learned was on the go, but I've been lucky to have friends and contacts with experience in running and managing small businesses. Whenever I faced challenges, I reached out to them for advice. It's still a learning process, and we're always growing, but I'm really happy with where we are now.

What tools help you run your business?

We utilize a variety of tools, particularly for the business management end. We use QuickBooks for accounting, Glofox for scheduling, and have a website and social media presence to maintain engagement with the community.

I couldn’t do this without being passionate about what I’m doing and who I’m doing it for.

What advice do you have for others looking to start their own business?

My advice really depends on why you're starting a business. For me, I couldn't do this without being passionate about what I'm doing and who I'm doing it for. That passion is key. Beyond that, it's crucial to have a strong team and a good support system. Surround yourself with people you trust and who believe in your vision. They’ll be there to help you through the tough times when you can't do it alone.

What is your best advice to other small business owners for hiring and retaining staff?

My best advice is to think about where your business is now and where you want it to go. Stay up-to-date on labor laws, as they're crucial for hiring and retaining staff. Be transparent and open about what you can offer, especially since small businesses might not be able to pay as much initially. Flexibility is important, but it's also essential to maintain strong boundaries. If managing people isn't your strength, consider hiring someone who excels at it. Having the right person in that role can make a big difference.

What challenges do you feel are unique to LGBTQIA+ business owners?

I think the challenges can vary depending on the nature of the business, the environment you're operating in, and who you're serving. All small business owners face similar hurdles, but queer business owners might encounter additional risks, especially if they're openly out or catering specifically to the LGBTQIA+ community. These challenges can be social, economic, or even physical, and they often depend on the location of the business.

How can SBOs give back and support the LGBTQIA+ community?

Honestly, supporting the LGBTQIA+ community as a small business owner doesn't require anything overly specific. Treat queer folks the same way you would treat anyone else and include them in your thought process when considering the services you offer. Make your support clear in your messaging without feeling the need to overdo it with symbols like rainbows everywhere. Integrate inclusivity naturally into your business ethos and messaging, so it feels genuine and not like a bid for social points.

What has been your proudest moment?

I have a lot of proud moments, but most of them come from seeing our members feel good when they leave or hearing them talk about how their lives have changed because of their experience with us. Watching the community grow and build connections outside of myself and our space is one of the most beautiful parts of running this business.

How do you maintain a work/life balance as a small business owner? In what ways do you take care of your mental health?

Balancing work and personal life as a business owner is incredibly challenging, especially when you're passionate about your work. It can easily consume your life. I've found it helpful to intentionally carve out time for myself to rest and recharge. Having at least one dedicated day each week completely free from work-related tasks, emails, and thoughts has been crucial for maintaining balance.

Additionally, having a therapist, supportive friends, or mentors who understand the unique challenges of running a business has been invaluable. They provide guidance and help navigate the complexities that come with entrepreneurship."

What’s your “power song” and why?

My power song really varies with my mood, but anything with a dynamic beat that I can sing or dance to usually gets me pumped up. Whether it's grooving to a new bop from Megan Thee Stallion or belting out a musical number from an old Disney movie or Broadway show with dramatic gestures, I find energy in music that lets me express myself.
