There’s a Buzz Brewing for Brooklyn General Store
Charmingly tucked away on a commercial block of Union Street, just west of the Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill neighborhoods in Brooklyn, N.Y., is a small business inspired a decade ago by the needs of a new mom.
Back then, recalls owner Catherine Clark, “I was a new young mother, and one of my passions was making things. I needed materials ... but found that there was really no place to go except for online to get the supplies that I needed. So I decided I was going to open a shop for supplies.”
She did just that, launching Brooklyn General Store in 2003 as a “haven for artists and craftspeople.” Today, the beloved local shop supplies high-quality natural-fiber supplies and tools not only to its immediate community, but also to the world at large through its website.
Eager to Expand the Store’s Reach
Having managed to sustain and grow her business over the past 10 years, Clark is now eager to advance her marketing reach.
“I haven’t really done any marketing,” she admits. “Financially, it’s been a challenge, so it’s definitely a need. I do have a website, and that’s kind of the only marketing that I have.”
To help give her Brooklyn establishment a boost, Clark entered QuickBooks' Small Business Local Buzz campaign.
“Following its mission to promote all things handmade, Brooklyn General Store also offer classes in knitting, sewing, spinning, felting, quilting, and embroidery,” Clark writes in her entry, stating that she wants to dedicate more effort to advancing her educational programs both in the shop and online.
This week, Clark’s bid for buzz won: QuickBooks is awarding Brooklyn General Store a customized marketing package worth $5,000.
“One side of my business is my school,” the thankful small-business owner explains. “I have a classroom. I don’t do it myself, but I organize and run several classes. ... My main incentive for this was to promote that and get more people to make things.”
