Can these 4 small businesses answer bookkeeping questions and win big?

Lets face it: You most likely didn’t become a business owner to balance books and become an expert in quarterly business taxes. Nevertheless, being a business owner means that you do need to know some of these things. 


The good news? You shouldn’t have to know the answer to every accounting question. 


We recently visited four small businesses to test their bookkeeping knowledge, with the chance to win a cash prize. When they hit a hard question; however, they had a special lifeline: a real QuickBooks Live Assisted bookkeeper to help them succeed.

Business: Gumbo Social


Owner: Dontaye Ball 


Location: San Francisco, CA 


Dontaye Ball started Gumbo Social as a pop-up serving southern-style gumbo and po boys. With a little help from Kickstarter, Ball was able to open a permanent brick-and-mortar restaurant in 2023. Gumbo Social has since become one of the premier spots in the Bay Area to get an authentic bowl of gumbo.

Erica Santos has been a licensed hairstylist since 2003, specializing in hand-tied hair extensions and custom color. She opened her own salon, Revival Studio, in 2011 and remains committed to ongoing education for her and her team, and of course, amazing hair.

At East Bay Audio, owner Adam Lopez and his team deliver all things A/V for events. Whether you’re putting on a music festival or simply need a little help with a virtual event—they offer both equipment rentals and live event production.

Owner: Jenny Gilmore


Location: Pleasant Hill, CA and Walnut Creek, CA 


Rooted Coffee is a family-owned and operated cafe that started selling coffee at farmers’ markets. Over the years, they’ve grown into two brick-and-mortar locations in the east bay of San Francisco, and make a point to showcase the work of local artists and musicians.
