Tell us a little about your business.

I offer Filipino greeting cards and stationery featuring my own artwork. My Filipino cards celebrate my culture and tradition. My business offers something unique by combining my own artwork and cultural authenticity.

Why did you decide to start your own business? How did you get started?

I started this business to earn extra income while being a full-time stay-at-home mom. When I got into watercolors, I decided to put my paintings on my invitations and stationery and then began selling them on Etsy.

What is the biggest lesson you learned in the first year?

Building a business takes time. It can be discouraging that sometimes your business is not growing as fast as you hoped. I had to learn to not let that discourage me and to stay consistent.

What was the most surprising thing about becoming a business owner?

As an introvert who prefers to stay home, I was surprised to find myself stepping outside of my comfort zone by joining markets. I enjoyed meeting my customers and having the opportunity to connect with other small business owners.

Were there any things about running a business you didn’t know when you started? How did you teach yourself?

I didn’t know anything about marketing and wholesale. I didn’t realize that I could sell my stuff to other retailers in bulk. Since we’re all consumers, I was focused on marketing to fellow consumers. I realized that wholesaling to retailers is the best way to grow my business! I learned more about wholesale from Katie Hunt in her LABS program!

What tools help you run your business?

I love Google Calendar and a physical planner.

You don’t have to have everything figured out.

What advice do you have for others looking to start their own business?

Just do it! You don’t have to have everything figured out.

What challenges do you feel are unique to AANHPI business owners?

My Filipino culture cards are such a small niche that it’s hard for me to find retailers that are willing to take my cards.

What has been your proudest moment?

My proudest moment would be that first time I reached out to a retailer to pitch my products. It was a hard first step to take, but I’m proud that I did it even though I was so scared.

When you’re having a tough day, who or what inspires you to keep going?

My kids keep me going.

How do you maintain a work/life balance as a small business owner? In what ways do you take care of your mental health?

I wake up early before the whole house wakes up. I treasure that alone/quiet time before I face a difficult day. I read the Bible while having my coffee every morning.

What’s your “power song” and why?

The song “Daydream” by Lily Meola is so inspiring and gives me motivation.
