QBDT inventory reclassification

A client is on QBDT Premier. There are a few items that really should not be classified as inventory. Technically they should simply be expense items but the client entered as inventory based on manner the items had to be ordered.

Is there a way to reclassify these items from inventory to expense items? Can I at least reclassify as non-inventory?

Thanks for any suggestions -

Lynne

Hi Lynne,

Welcome and thank you for posting about changing the item type of your client's inventories.

I see that this would help you a lot. However, inventories have a strict setup that will not allow users to turn them into a different type, like a non-inventory or a service type. You will really have to create the replacements, and if there are transactions, you will need to go through them to replace the items with the new ones.

After deleting the transactions, might as well inactivate the old items so they will not be accidentally used in future transactions.

  1. From the Lists menu, select Item List.
  2. Right-click on the item you want to remove and select Edit Item.
  3. Put a checkmark in the Item is inactive checkbox.
  4. Click Make Inactive if you're prompted to confirm, and click OK to exit.

Please don't hesitate to reach back out if you have other concerns with your client's company file. Have a good one!

It's going to be easiest to make journal entries by debiting the proper expense account(s) and crediting inventory.
