Installing Desktop Pro 2023

I bought a new computer and want to move my company files from our old computer to our new one.  I have 4 company codes on the old computer, but I only want to move 3 of the company files to the new computer.  At the same time I want to upgrade to Desktop Pro 2023.

If I install Desktop Pro 2023 on the new computer, can I copy the 3 company files from the old computer that is using Desktop Pro 2021?  Will it convert the 2021 files to be compatible with the 2023 version?

Thank you!

Open the files on your QBD 2021, create the backup files, and restore the files on QBD 2023.

It's our pleasure to receive your first post in the Community forum, @slatt. I'll share some insights about your company files so it works on your new version of QuickBooks Desktop Pro (QBDT) and ensure you can continue to manage your business.

Yes, you can move your three company files from the old computer. As Fiat Lux - ASIA stated, open the files using your QBDT 2021. Create a backup copy for each company file and copy them to your new folder. Restore the files on QBDT 2023, which will have a new location. Then you can delete company files in the older folder.

When you restore, QuickBooks uses the backup company file (.qbb) to create a new company file (.qbw). Once done, follow the steps below to restore the company file.

  1. Let's ensure all users are logging out of your company file.
  2. Open your new version of QuickBooks Desktop
  3. Once done, open the newly installed QBDT and click Open or Restore Company or go to the File menu and pick Open or Restore Company.
  4. Tick the Open a company file and click Next.
  5. Locate the company file, then choose Open.
  6. Log in as admin and hit Update Now to start the upgrade.
  7. Once finished, select Done.
