Opening QBB files without QuickBooks

Hi there, jeffpchandler.

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community. Let me discuss how files in QuickBooks Desktop works. Then, I'll ensure you can open the QBB file smoothly.

Every QuickBooks company file is generally saved with an extension determining the QuickBooks file. The extensions such as. QBB is primarily used to store all your tabulated data and financial information or this is a backup file data. With this, opening this file needs to have a QuickBooks Desktop installed on your computer so you can restore it and view the needed details.

Since you've mentioned that the program hasn't been on your computer, I suggest downloading and using our 30-day trial version of QBDT. This way, you can restore or open your company file from there using the backup company file (.qbb). Before doing so, you'll have to make sure that your computer's operating system, hardware, software, and other requirements are compatible to run QuickBooks Desktop. You can open this article to see extra details: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

Once everything looks good, you now start restoring your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's how:

  1. From QuickBooks, go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
  2. Choose Restore a backup copy and click Next.
  3. Select Local Backup and Next.
  4. Browse your computer for your backup company file. It should look like this: [Your company name].qbb.
  5. Select a folder to decide where to save your restored company file. Then, select Open.
  6. When you're ready, click Save. If you see any messages about possibly overwriting your data, select the option that best fits your needs. Don't overwrite anything unless you know you want to.

After that, you can now view and open the company QBB file that you can work with your client.

Lastly, you may refer to this article to see steps on how you can fix general problems when your company file won't open: Can't open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.

Keep us posted if you have further questions regarding your QuickBooks data. I'm always here to help you, jeffpchandler. Have a great day!

@jeffpchandler

You can utilize the trial version for QB Desktop to open the backup files. Ask your clients which QB Desktop year version they are using.
