Autocomplete Not Working

I am using QuickBook Desktop for Mac 2020.  Just today the autocomplete stopped working on the drop-down menus.  For example, when I type an account number, I type the first digit, then the second digit.  Now the second digit has replaced the first digit.  Whenever I type another digit, it will replace the one previous.  It only accepts one digit or character, and it will be the most recent one you typed.  I tried different keyboards, and that doesn't make a difference.  Has anyone run into this?  It's driving me crazy.  I don't have time to scroll down to each account number for journal entry, check, or anything that has a drop-down menu.  Thanks in advance!!

Hi there, Janet Dempsey.

I’m here to help you get past the issue you're getting about auto-fill behavior.

Let's run Verify and Rebuild Data tool. Verifying will detect any damaged data, while rebuilding will attempt to fix it. It also allows your QuickBooks software to refresh the data inside the company file. \

Here’s how:

  1. Go to the File menu, then select Utilities.
  2. Click Verify Data, then tap OK.

After that, follow these steps to fix any errors or data damage that's found:

  1. Navigate to the File menu again, then select Utilities.
  2. Click Rebuild Data, then press OK.
  3. QuickBooks will ask you to make a backup before rebuilding your company file, select OK.
  4. Once done, hit OK.

Additionally, make sure your QuickBooks Desktop is up-to-date. This way, you always have the latest features and fixes.

I've added this article for more troubleshooting steps for the QuickBooks for Mac version: Additional data damage troubleshooting for Mac.

Please leave me a comment below if you need more help with the process or an update about how things go. I’ll be here to help you. Stay safe.

I followed the steps, but unfortunately, nothing changed.  For example, if I start a general journal entry, and I type in account 4250, first it shows me the first GL account starting with a "4," next I see the first GL account starting with a "2," then the first GL account starting with a "5," then the first account starting with a "0."  The way it is now, I can only use the drop-down menu to scroll down to choose an account.  I cannot type the beginning or the whole account number.  Do you have any other suggestions for me?

Thank you.  For now, I will scroll until I see the account name/number I need.  This is just a workaround.  This is something that will be corrected in the next update, right?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Janet Dempsey.

Having the option to type the beginning or the whole journal account number would be a great idea. With this said, I'd recommend sending this request straight to our product engineers through feedback. Sharing features and options that you would like implemented is how our engineers look for new product updates. There are always open opinions as this helps improve our product to suit your business needs. To send feedback, you can follow these steps:

  1. Choose QuickBooks and select Preferences.
  2. On the Preferences pane, select Feedback.
  3. Select the Enable sending usage data to Intuit check box. The preference is enabled by default.
  4. Click the Preferences window.
  5. From this pane, you can follow a link to the QuickBooks Desktop Mac
