Fiat Lux is not the answer. Anyone interested in that dead end should give it a whirl and make their own mind.

Using QB Desktop without a subscription is also a non-starter.

Fiat Lux helped our clients and we have not had any problems with them. Any special concerns?

All available options are cloud-based applications. Unless you are considering using ERP

Fiat Lux

Fiat Lux offers a workaround for using an unlicensed version of QB Desktop. I don’t mean to be rude but unless you’re talking about a popsicle stand, I can’t imagine integrating unlicensed and potentially unstable software at the core of my bookkeeping processes.

It’s only a matter of time before Intuit makes a move against Fiat Lux in that regard. These are the kinds of decisions that predict success or failure for businesses. Using unlicensed software is a bad decision for a lot more reasons than potential legal issues. Choosing cheaper short term patches over longer term solutions is a disease that rots businesses from the inside. There are already multitudes of external forces to deal with when running a business. Taping and gluing your internal business infrastructure together is always disastrous in the end.

Life is too short to spent time fixing problems of your own making. This is true in your personal and business life.

I can make use of simple bookkeeping options for a good long while before pulling the trigger on a QB replacement. I was running businesses back in the late 1970’s before computers and bookkeeping software were available to simplify the process. The techniques I’m using for now have been in use for thousands of years. I simply turbo-charge the old methods by way of computer data entry and spreadsheet software. I’m semi retired so my bookkeeping needs are simpler than they used to be. It’s more of a hassle for sure but it’s giving me time to wait for QB competitors to release more products.

They share a workaround to use the trial version, not an unlicensed version. As long as you don't need to run add-ons like payroll, you'll be fine. Some of my clients have migrated their data to other applications but still need to access their archive files. Using the trial version to open old files is still an acceptable solution for us.

Fiat Lux

Using a competitor’s trial version software past its trial date is the literal definition of using unlicensed software. Using a competitor’s trial version that cannot receive typical software and security updates over time won’t work for me.

I understand Fiat Lux’s reasons for  characterizing their workaround in a positive manner. I wish Fiat Lux all the luck in the world in their business model. I simply told you why I would not choose to do that.

If Fiat Lux is able to secure licensing from Intuit in order to provide a QB Desktop product that can receive appropriate software and security updates along with a reasonable

level of tech support (from Fiat Lux), I will buy a subscription and become a loyal Fiat Lux client.

Without knowing anything about you or your business, no, I don’t have any recommendations.

I have written a few  comments in this thread today explaining how I am handling this extended period of transition. I operated businesses before computers and software were available for bookkeeping. I’m using keyboards and spreadsheets to keep records. Still a helluva lot faster and easier than pens, pencils, typewriters, and clunky adding machines like the old days.

People operated businesses just fine for thousands of years without modern technology. Don’t get me wrong, this sucks, but I’m not going all in on a bookkeeping solution for a while.

Waiting to see what pops up from QB competitors, both existing and potential startups. When I finally make a decision I’ll definitely make it known here. Who knows, maybe the dunderheads that drove QB into the ground will get fired and new management will reactivate a QB Desktop product for a reasonable price.

No. QB Desktop is no longer receiving software or security updates. It’s dead in the water…a sinking ship. Trying to run a business defunct bookkeeping software is a losing proposition.
