I can share some insights about this Chart of Accounts import in QuickBooks Online topic.

Being able to import account numbers for existing registers or accounts in QuickBooks is a good idea. However, at the moment, the system will only allow imports for new accounts that are not yet added to the program.

You will get an error when you try to import data that has a match in QBO: We didn't import some of your data because it's already in QuickBooks. If you still want to import it, change the info in the highlighted fields and try again.

I understand that this isn't what you've expected, but I have an option for you. You can manually edit the Chart of Accounts register, and then add the number to them. You can do it by batch, here's how:

  1. Go to the Accounting menu.
  2. Choose Chart of Accounts.
  3. Click the pencil icon beside the print option.
  4. Now, you can edit the accounts one at a time, then save it all at once.
  5. Click Save when done.

I've listed a few related links about the Chart of accounts, import, as well as some QBO tutorials:

Hello there, lrhmail451.

Let me share some insights about importing in QuickBooks Online.

You can only import a Chart of Accounts. Note that you're unable to import an account with the same name to an existing account on COA.

You may consider editing the account name on file. For example:(Bank 1 to Bank 1.0) then merge the accounts. Aside from that, ensure that you'll save the other account without the number to merge them without an error.

Here's how:

  1. On your Chart of Accounts, take note of the Names and the Detail Types of the account you want to merge.
  2. Locate the account without the number.
  3. Under the Action drop-down, click Edit.
  4. Edit the Name and make the Detail Type of the accounts you're merging are the same.
  5. Click Save and Close.
  6. Click Yes.

You can also use the Batch edit feature in QBO to save time by clicking the Pencil icon from the Chart of accounts window.

Please check this article for more details: Import your chart of accounts to QBO.

Once you're all set, feel free to check out this article that can help you seamlessly match your accounts: Reconcile your accounts in QBO.

Drop me a comment below if you need more help in importing your other data. I'm always here to back you up.

thank for your answer  but i know how to import the chart of accounts

what i want to do is do maintenance on my chart of accounts the accountant before me

use all sorts of numbers doing the chart of accts i can keep the acct but the acct #s have to be changed

with the desktop QB you can download the chart of accts file and then fix what you want and then import the file back into QB with your changes

being online is starting to show so many draw backs with its usage
