Why does QuickBooks keep disconnecting from my bank account, and how do I keep the connection from dropping?

Repeated disconnects usually mean your bank is dropping QuickBooks's authorization, and the fix most people miss is a permission on the bank's side. Many banks require you to allow third-party or connected-app access before the link will stay put. The other common causes are a changed bank password or security step, a bank website update or maintenance, or a browser cache issue.

1. Turn on third-party access at your bank

  1. Sign in to your bank's website (not the app).
  2. Look in your profile or security settings for connected apps, data sharing, or third-party access, and allow access for Intuit or QuickBooks.
  3. If you can't find it, call your bank and ask them to enable third-party financial app access for your account.

2. Reconnect the account (as a new connection)

Important: don't delete the existing bank connection to try to fix a disconnect. If you delete it, all the transaction history tied to that connection is permanently gone. Instead, add a new connection for the same account:

  • On the web: go to Settings ⚙, then Bank accounts, then select Connect another account. Search for your bank and account type, then follow the onscreen steps.
  • In the mobile app: tap the Accounts area on the Dashboard, select the + icon on the Bank account screen, search for your bank and account type, then follow the onscreen steps.

Once the new connection is in and downloading again, exclude any transactions that come in a second time from the old connection so you don't end up with duplicates. See Reconnect your bank account in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

If you're setting up a bank connection fresh rather than fixing a disconnect, follow Connect bank and credit card accounts to QuickBooks Self-Employed.

3. Rule out a browser issue

  1. Open QuickBooks in a private or incognito window and try reconnecting.
  2. If that works, clear your regular browser's cache and cookies, then reconnect.

4. Don't lose transactions while it's down

Because your bank only shares a limited history and reconnecting may not backfill, import the gap manually so nothing is lost: Manually import transactions into QuickBooks Self-Employed.

If it still keeps disconnecting after enabling third-party access and reconnecting, reach out with your bank's name and any error code you see so we can check for a known issue: go to the Help or Assistant menu and choose to contact us.

Let's make sure we can fix your bank issue, ashleynb9225.

But before we start, may I know what's the name of your bank? This will help me to further determine the reason why your bank keeps disconnecting. In the meantime, let's try reconnecting your bank using a private browser (incognito window). This way, we'll be able to isolate if this is a browser-related issue. I've provided these shortcuts below:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+P
  • Safari: Command+Shift+N
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl+Shift+N.

If it works, we can clear the cache to clear up any cache-related issues. This lets you speed up the loading process so you work on a clean slate. Once done, you can try reconnecting your bank account

Furthermore, QuickBooks puts to the correct line of your Schedule C after QuickBooks downloads your bank transactions. To learn more on how to organize your income and expenses, learn from this article for your guide: Categorize Transactions In QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Fill me in if you need further assistance when reconnecting your bank. The Community is always here to assist you 24/7.

Try opening your QBSE account on any private/incognito browser.

I found the fix FINALLY! You have to contact your bank and make sure you have the option to allow a connection to a 3rd party financial planning tool turned on. I have HUNTINGTON BANK. Called customer service and they had me sign on using the web version. There was a setting in my profile to allow my account to connect. It doesn’t unlink anymore.

It’s weird though because I’ve had my account connected to other stuff for like ever.

This is annoying because I end up losing transactions that I have to figure out how to enter in because my bank only goes back so far.

Hello, NinjaUnmatched. I totally get how annoying it must be that your bank keeps disconnecting from QuickBooks.

Can I have the name of the bank so I can check if there are similar cases? I also recommend checking your bank's website or logging in to your account to see if there are any updates or maintenance announcements that could be causing the disconnection. If there's none, please get in touch with our Live Support team  to check this further.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the (?) Help panel.
  2. Enter your concerns into the Search bar.
  3. Click on Contact Us.

Please make sure to check their support hours so you can reach them at the right time.

Alternatively, you may consider uploading your transactions manually so you no longer have to deal with disconnection issues and the loss of your data. You can do this on a weekly or monthly basis, depending on your number of transactions.

Additionally, I suggest creating bank rules to speed up the process of categorizing your transactions.

Feel free to reply to this thread if you have any other questions. We're always here to help!
