Which QB Desktop year version and Windows OS do you have? Did you encounter the same problem when opening a dummy file or a sample one?

Hi there waikei0612,

Keeping track of your foreign currency transactions is crucial, and using the Multicurrency feature in QuickBooks Desktop enables you to do so with ease. It sounds like you're familiar with how the set-up process should go, so let me point you in the right direction to be able to fix the issue you're running into.

It sounds like there might be some data damage within your company file. Both the Rebuild Data tool and the QuickBooks File Doctor will help you to fix minor company file issues, and you have the option to manually rebuild your data as well. We have a great article that goes over al of these options in further detail:

If those tips don't quite do the trick, then you can reach out for support outside of the Community where our agents can do a screen share with you and provide you with some alternate troubleshooting steps. You mentioned that the agent wanted you to pay a fee, so I also want to leave you with the Intuit QuickBooks Desktop software support policies so you can better understand the fees involved in receiving support.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm here to help.

Hi Fiai Lux,

Thank you for your reply.

1)  In Preset Sample file under QB : I can see multi-currencies.

2) The problem in open a dummy file : I CANNOT turn on Multicurrencies function.

I have used QB for many years.  There is no problems in using the multi-currencies.  I decided to buy the new QB 2020 last year for matching the window 10.   As the concerted data file cannot be used in QB 2020 even though trying some suggestions from the agent to change the setting of customer name, I have no choice to open a new company in QB 2020 for new financial year.  I found the problem that I could not set up HOME CURRENCY under the QB guideline step 1  : Turn on Multicurrency.  Under step 1 # 4. There is no currency under the drop-down manual.

Is there any missed step before the  Turn on Multicurrency?

Hi Rebecca,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I would like to ask about the data damage of Company File.  Should it be problem of data damage under the following situation? Is there any missed step before the  Turn on Multicurrency for open a new company.

I tried to download the purchased QB 2020 in a new desk top thru the provided link and then set up a new company.

Under the sample file of QB 2020 shows the multi-currencies.

However, in the new set up company,  I found the problem that I could not set up HOME CURRENCY under the QB guideline step 1  : Turn on Multicurrency.  Under step 1 # 4. There is no currency under the drop-down manual.

Thank you again

If the same error persists when creating a new file or opening the sample one, you have to reinstall QB on your machine. You may also consider to install the trial license of QBD 2021 and compare both of them later.

Hello waikei0612,

I've read through this thread to bring myself up to speed with what's going on with your QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and the multicurrency feature. I see my colleague suggested the steps to check for data damage and that you have some additional questions about that. I can explain what data damage means and why it's a good thing to check.

Data damage can impact a company file in a number of ways, such as causing features not to work the way they should be. The article she shared walks you through the various ways you can check for damage to your company file, and I recommend starting there as it should also guide you through resolving any issues that may arise.

As for setting up multicurrency, it doesn't sound like you're missing any steps. All it takes is going to the Edit menu, then Preferences, choose Multiple Currencies, then select the Company Preferences tab. On that screen, select Yes, I use more than one currency, then you should be able to choose the one you'd like to set as your home currency from the drop-down menu. Based on what you've outlined, it sounds like you're using the following article to guide you, but to be sure, here is our article that goes over this feature in detail: Set up and use Multicurrency

If the steps for fixing data damage don't resolve the issue you're seeing, working with our support team is the way to go. It sounds like there are more details about your situation that may be helpful in resolving this and a call or chat with support will allow us to see what you're seeing as well. Just to make sure you have it again, here's that article my colleague shared: Intuit QuickBooks Desktop software support policies

Wishing you the best with this!
