Hey QB community!
I have been finally taking over my quickbooks online to better understand my budget.
On my profit and loss statements there are transactions that need to be reclassified. I have figured out how to go back into banking and do this one by one, but I know there has to be a way to bulk reclassify.
I have seen with accountant tools you can, I cannot seem to find these accountant tools and I am not certain
You're in the right place, @bsbrister!
Yes, we're able to reclassify transactions in batch with QuickBooks Online Accountant. All you need to do is use the Reclassify transactions feature from the Accountant Tools. I'm here to share with you how.
To learn more about what transactions you can and can't reclassify, feel free to read the details from this article: Reclassify or move multiple transactions at once.
If you don't have an accountant version of QuickBooks, you can invite one to perform the actions. Here's how: Invite an accountant to review your accounting in QuickBooks Online.
I'll be right here to continue helping if you have any other questions. Just leave a comment below. Keep safe!
This looks like a great resolution, although. I am not sure how to access accountant.
When I click login accountant it takes me to a dashboard that does not have accountant tools, no briefcase.
Thanks for getting back here, @bsbrister.
Allow me to chime in and share some info about this feature. Accountant tools are only available to users or accountants who use QuickBooks Online (QBO) Accountant. To access this, you can sign up for QuickBooks Online Accountant or have a client that'll invite you as there accountant.
Thus, if you're already using QuickBooks Online (QBO) Accountant and can't see the Accountant tools menu. You may open your account using a private browser. There are times that the browser is full of frequently-accessed page resources, thus causing websites, like QBO, to act weirdly.
Here's how to use a private browser:
Once signed in, please follow the steps provided by my colleague, Angelyn_T to reclassify transactions in batch.
If this works, go back to your regular browser and clear the cache. This will refresh the background processes of your browser to prevent problems when accessing websites.
If you get the same result while using a private browser, I recommend switching to a different browser.
For more details about using accountant tools and features in QBO Accountant, please visit this article: Learn about accountant tools.
I’ve added this handy article that you can read through, that will help you manage accountant users in QBO: Managing accountant users.
Feel free to post a reply below if you have more questions about the accountant tools feature or any QuickBooks-related concerns. I'm here to help however I can. Take care always.
I appreciate all the speedy replys but this still does not help my position.
I am not an accountant, i simply want to reclassify transactions without having to do one at a time.
I went through the process to sign up for qb accountant, but i am not a firm and do not feel i need to pay another monthly membership just to re categorize my transactions because they were done incorrectly by a previous accountant.
Is there any way for me to do this in regular quickbooks online or am I going to need to do the one by one? thanks
Thanks for getting back to us, bsbrister.
Since you're using the regular version of QuickBooks Online, you have two options to reclassify your transactions. It's either manually doing it or invite an accountant to do it for you.
You may follow these steps to manually reclassify the transactions:
If you'd like to invite an accountant, you check out the steps to learn how.
Once done, your accountant will receive an invite link with the steps on how to connect to your account. If your accountant doesn't have QuickBooks Online Accountant, there's a link in the invite to learn how to sign up.
To know more about the transactions you can't move, you can refer to this article: Reclassify or move multiple transactions at once.
Additionally, I've included an article about the maximum number of billable and accountant users you can add in QuickBooks. This helps you verify if how many users you can set up in your account: How many users can I set up?.
I'm always here to assist you. Drop a comment if you have other questions in reclassifying your transaction.
Is there a way to do this with the QB Desktop Pro 2019 Edition
Welcome to the thread, @tutentitle.
Yes, there is. You have the option to reclassify transactions in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Accountant, Enterprise, or Accountant Enterprise.
To do this, you'll need first to select the fiscal year you want to review. Here's how:
Once done, you can now review your client's transactions. When reclassifying, you can move your transactions to their correct account or class.
For more details, check this article: Accountant tools: Reclassify your client’s transactions.
Please know that you can count on me if you need anything else. Have a great day!
You may have to reclassify your data manually by using a migration tool. Export your transactions to XLS, modify and reimport them back into your file in bulk.

Why is it that every answer says GO HIRE AN ACCOUNTANT so they can use the version you do NOT have??? What is the way for a NON Accountant (I.e. small business owner with DESKTOP 2020) to do this on their own?
Let me help with your question about reclassifying transactions in bulk, Jeffjjk.
I've also read the responses in the thread and it looks like they're all referring to a feature that's exclusively available in the Accountant version of QuickBooks Online and Desktop. This is the reason why they suggested reaching out to an accountant that's using QuickBooks so they can reclassify multiple transactions at once.
For regular versions of QuickBooks, you can open each transaction that you want to reclassify. Then, make your changes accordingly.
There are also third-party apps in the Intuit Marketplace that offer services such as bulk editing of transactions. You can go to this link to search for accredited apps:
https://desktop.apps.com/home.

Utilize a migration tool as I mentioned earlier. Otherwise, purchase a one time license of QBD Premier Accountant edition for yourself.
And if you're a Mac Desktop version user, you're out of luck since there isn't an Accountant version, and you'll have to do them all one-by-one....
Wow does Quickbooks suck!
Any specific concern?
Yes. All I want to do is be able to reclassify or move multiple transactions at once. But no, I have to "Hire an Accountant" or use some third-party importing tool for what should be something very simple and easy. Now I am slogging through my transactions updating each one individually.
See above. It's ridiculous.
You can open a QB Online Accountant account for free with another email address to access your own QB Online account as accountant.
I've been struggling with this myself. It's incredible that something so simple can't be accomplished by a regular user. I have hundreds of transactions that I wished I could just check and reclassify, but the only way for me to know which, is by looking at the Description field - WHICH IS NOT PRESENT IN THE EXPENSE TRANSACTIONS LIST where you could potentially do batch reclassifying. So I figured I would just do an ADVANCED SEARCH and look for my transactions (by Description), but once they all show up, THERE'S NO BATCH ACTION YOU CAN DO WITH IT (you can't even select them other than opening them one by one). It is immensely frustrating.

Hello:
I realize that this is an old thread. I was trying to do something similar to the OP. I have many entries that have variations of vendor names from downloading from bank feeds. It makes the P&L a complete mess. So I wanted a way to re-classify several transactions.
Turns out, that it was MUCH simpler then that. At least for what I wanted to do, so I thought I would share. If you go to your Other Name list (or any list) you can rename the list items. If you use a name already in use, it offers to merge them!!!
I learned about this at this post here:
Merge list entries in QuickBooks Desktop (intuit.com)
Very excited to share this. No need to buy software, export, import and ask the accountant to do it. It is just what I needed. Hope it helps someone here.
Is this a real reply? This is a simple request. I need to reclassify 1K transactions into a new class. I DO NOT want to go to an accountant or add a new view. I AM HAPPY to pay more to get this done. What is a real solution and please don't say go one by one. I need a batch solution for QBO.
The only other way you can do it besides what is mentioned above is just by doing a journal entry. However, it is a bulk move and the original transactions won't be touched. But at least your reporting would be accurate.
I am a QBO certified online accountant with the accountant version. If you would like to email me at [email address removed] I can help you.
Angie Martin
but how do we assign a class to a bunch of different transactions at once in QB Premier 2020? Don't want to do it one by one. I can use CTRL-F (find function) to search on a text string in the memo field to pull up all the transactions that I want to assign to a class. But I don't know what to do from there...
Don't do this with the same e-mail account though as it will merge your intuit accounts and you will then be stuck in QBO Accountant forever. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but it will disrupt your internal processes and procedures. You will also lose any custom reports that aren't shared as the 'new' user will supplant the existing intuit user account with the same e-mail address...
