64-bit installation problem "There is not enough room on drive C:/ to extract this package"

I can't even get past the install wizard.

See attached screenshot.

My solid state C: drive has 139 gb of free space. I am running Windows 10 64 bit.

The suggestion offered on the support site to modify a file in the temp folder won't work because I can't get far enough in the installation process for that file to be created.

Please help me!

Thanks very much, Frank

    Hi there, frankfelker and vst,

Let's get your concern taken care of so you can install QuickBooks Desktop on the computer.

The first thing we need to check is ensure the computer meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop. I've added this article to guide you through: QuickBooks Desktop system requirements

Since you're not able to install the software even if the hard drive has enough memory, I'd recommend getting in contact with our Installation Team. They have additional tools, such as screen sharing, to look up the computer and software for possible reasons why the error message appears.

Here's how to get a specialist from our Installation Team:

    1. Go to this link: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact
    2. Select QuickBooks Desktop.
    3. Select your version of QuickBooks Desktop.
    4. Select the Install topic in step 1.
    5. Click the Get Phone Number button.

You can always reach out to me if you have additional concerns about installing QuickBooks.

    Hi there, Tim.

Thanks for dropping by here in the Community. Let's work together and fix the error you're seeing.

As mentioned by my colleague MichelleT above, we first have to ensure your computer meets or exceeds the system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop. You can see the detailed information in this article:

    QuickBooks Desktop system requirements

Since you have over 300GB available space on your drive, let's try to set up folder and access permissions. Then, clear the memory by deleting files from the %temp% folder. These processes help empty the storag and fix some installation errors.

To set up folder and access permissions:

    • Windows 10, 8, and 7
    1. On your keyboard, open the File Explorer by pressing the Windows logo E keys.
    2. Go to C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Temp or type %temp% in the address bar.
    3. Right-click the Temp folder, then select Properties.
    4. Choose Sharing and click Share.
    5. Add the Windows User Profile and the corresponding QBDataServiceUserXX for your QuickBooks.
    6. Set the permission level of both users to Full Control, then click Share.
    • Windows 8.1
    1. Choose the folder and select Share.
    2. Go to Advanced Security, click Add and choose Select a principal.
    3. Pick Advanced, then Find Now.
    4. Choose the user and select OK
    5. Click Full Control and OK.

To delete files from the %temp% folder:

    1. On your keyboard, open the Run window by pressing the Windows logo + R keys.
    2. Type %temp%, then select OK.
    3. Press Ctrl+A, then Delete
    4. Retry extracting the installer package. The file name depends on the edition and version of your QuickBooks (for QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2018 = QuickBooksPro2018.exe).
    5. Double-click the downloaded file, then follow the prompts.
    6. If you have an existing file extractor installed on your computer, use it to unpack the installer.

For more details, check out this article:

There is not enough space or Your system only has xxxMB of memory when installing QuickBooks Desktop

These steps should generally help rectify the error you're encountering.

Be sure to update me here on the results of your testing, I want to ensure this matter gets resolved.

None of these suggestions worked for me.  I was able to extract the files from the QuickBooksPro2019.exe file using 7-Zip, then successfully ran the Setup.exe file from the extracted files.

Thank you for this approach - it seems to be working for me. I really don't think it should be necessary - Windows Installer technology has been around for 40 years. I am especially disappointed in the responses of the Intuit "specialists", who clearly don't have a clue how their own software work (or doesn't, in this case).

I had the same problem and saw where different ones were using 7 zip to solve the problem but since Intuit discouraged the use of that and other 3rd party programs I decided not to do it. Instead I called tech support and after almost 4 hours of troubleshooting guess what they did....they downloaded 7 zip and within minutes the problem was solved. So do not waste your time calling tech support just download 7 zip.

This is ridiculous.  Quickbooks turns off the ability to download bank transactions in a blatant grab to extort money out of you when you have a perfectly functioning program that you already paid for.  After being forced to pay for the 2020 version, they don't even have the decency to ensure that the program will install without resorting to third party apps to get it installed.  Typical Quickbooks quality.  I wish there was something better....

I too downloaded 7 zip and had the file installed in minutes.  Thanks for nothing Quicken IT!

Same issue for the 2023 version. C: Drive has 915GB of free space with a "not enough space" error. The 7-zip method works and is a quick fix. I assume any zip extraction program will work.

    • -Move QB Installer to "Documents" folder
    • -Install 7-zip and open program
    • -In 7-zip, click "Documents" folder on left side of program
    • -Select the Quickbooks installer file
    • -Click "Extract" button in the top left of the program
    • -In the pop up, indicate where to extract the files to
    • -Click Ok, wait for extraction to complete
    • -Quickbooks folder with Setup program should now be in your indicated location
    • -Continue with Quickbooks set up as usual

    Hi any idea for QB2016?

Install the trial version of QB Desktop to isolate the problem. Did you encounter the same error message?

Intuit still has this problem with the installer 12/06/2022. Extract with 7zip and then install.

I tried Quickbooks tech support and they couldn't figure it out. A friend suggested loading the update file on an external backup drive. It installed perfectly on my c drive that was

    SIMPLE SOLUTION.

I used the QuickBooks Tool Hub which was already downloaded.

There are a list of topics in the left column. I selected "Installation Issues"

Then I ran the "QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool"

    I restarted my computer.

I downloaded it again. And it worked perfectly.

    May 18, 2023

Thank you, thank you!  You provided the best "unlimited expertise" for the problem.  This is the simplest fix, using the QB Tool Hub (which the QB Techs should have known in the first place).  It worked perfectly!

    May 18, 2023

Sorry, my response should have gone under gm232, using the QB Tool Hub.

Do you have an updated link for this issue? I'm having this problem with Desktop Pro 2023 and have plenty of room on drive C and meet all system requirements.

The fix is in the first page of this thread, about two-thirds of the way down.  I was having the same problem, and was actually told by Quickbooks support that my 113 gb wasn't enough space to run the installer.  Did the 7-zip extract and everything installed just fine.  I am continually amazed at how bad Quickbooks, and Quickbooks support is.  I have to find a suitable replacement (which shouldn't be too difficult, given the problems with QB).

So found others with issue out there and turns out, some issue within the self extractor file won't extract the information. Go to the file assuming you have 7ZIP installed, right click, select 7ZIP and extract files, then go to folder and run setup, then install works that way.
