Can I write checks that split expenses. This is easily done in the desktop version. I DO NOT WANT TO USE JOURNAL ENTRIES. how do I show splits?

My class is not using your payroll and we want to show the splits on the check for deductions. the students are not using journal entries and that seems to be the only way your online program handles it. Can I write a split ?(you can do it on invoices and bills)

@debbedugan-comca

Affirmative!!  Expense, Check and Bill transactions all allow splits.  If you pull each of these transactions up (+New), you'll notice the bottom half is identical... and there are two sections:

Category details (this accesses Chart of accounts)

Item Details (this accesses Products/Services, each of those are assigned to an account).

If you need to test other capabilities of QBO for your class, here is the demo link:

VERY best in 2022 to you!

I'm here to help you record the split transactions using checks, @debbedugan-comca.

Yes, you can split your transactions by writing a check in QuickBooks. Just enter the other accounts on the second line item together with the amount and it will show Split in the Category column.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the New Icon (+).
  2. Choose Check.
  3. Select the name of the Payee.
  4. In the first and second line items in your Category details section, choose the specific expense category or expense account.
  5. Enter the expense details.
  6. Click Save and Close.

You can read through this article for more detailed steps: How to write checks.

Once done, you can go to the Expenses menu and locate the transaction. The Split will show in the Category column.

Also, you can browse these articles to learn more about recording transactions and mapping them to a correct expense account:
